Everybody is so negative.. does Bungie even care?

Part of me finds it humorous, all the negative things that are said about Bungie and what they are doing wrong with Destiny. The banter is pretty funny, the and disses and comebacks between players are comical. I mean there’s so much passion and pain, and hurt and within that hurt theres a deep level of betrayal on the forums. But then on the other hand, the forums are straight up toxic. Now I’m wondering if Bungie even cares. Do they even care how much trash is being said about their game? Maybe they’re just letting it slide because they have already announced much needed updates coming in future seasons. But then again the forums are always unhappy, always toxic, and it always seems like Bungie isn’t doing enough. (I’m not saying that Bungie is doing enough jtbc (just to be clear))

    • There’s a difference between feedback and toxic behavior and Bungie has been pretty good about picking out and making changes based on actual feedback over the years. The fandom’s real issue is that toxic behavior is rewarded and genuine feedback is attacked for not being toxic. Like you can’t post positively about destiny on these forums without getting hate for daring to enjoy the game.

Bungie does listen to the community more so than most other videogame companies. One clear example is when they cancelled sunsetting but there are many more. However, they have made certain decisions that have made me enjoy the game a lot less, particularly when it comes to PvP but also for PvE. Here are some of my gripes: 1. Nerfing of Protective Light and implementation of Well Mods. This was designed to make build-crafting an interesting component of the game but to me, it's just annoying that I have to spend 10-15 minutes before a GM to switch out mods and that I am forced to use weapons I don't want to use, just because they match the subclass I am using for that GM. 2. Airborne Effectiveness changes. These, contrary to Well Mods, which have been implemented successfully from Bungie's perspective, do not work. It is so difficult to construct an airborne-effective build, to the point where it is not even worth it. The ones hurt the most by this are Warlocks and this is what I think has hurt them most in PvP, not the 3.0 subclass changes themselves. 3. Removal of old content that was hype and addition of new content/recycled content that isn't. This includes removal of things like surprise missions (e.g. Zero Hour) and old Raids (e.g. Leviathan), content that its customers bought and paid for but are now no longer able to access. It is just another way Bungie have limited what we can play in/how we can play the game. 4. One thing remains constant: The grind. I understand that Bungie have had limited resources in the past and for that reason, have had to walk the thin line of balancing grindiness with fun and novelty, in order to give themselves enough time to produce and release future content. However, after the acquisition of Bungie by Sony, I would have expected the balance to shift more to "fun", thanks to those Sony dollars but it hasn't. Content is as grindy as it has ever been, to the point where it can become exasperating to play the game. 5. The reckless abandon with which Bungie has abandoned PvP. I have read the latest TWAB and the tone with which Bungie spoke about their plans for the future of this aspect of the game would make you think they were doing a complete overhaul but honestly, you can colour me unimpressed. No mention of further anti-cheat upgrades (cheaters are slowly become more and more numerous again), no dedicated servers (even now with Sony's resources), no permanent Freelance for Trials and only one new map to be released with Lightfall. Really?

        • Do you know why so much so called toxicity in Destiny forums? Simple. Bungie don't listen what community ask for. Forum itself created for feedback from players. Bungie told for years "you've been heard" and did something absolutely opposite or stupidly grindy (current situation with crafting of weapons is so awkward and stupid). What look even more stupid. You don't need to guess what your core players want - because they told you what they want and what they don't want. It's so simple. You do what people want, they give you their money, you rich - customers happy. On top of that you give people something new what you created (seasonal activities, lost sectors and so on), people says is it good or no, give some criticism, you change it or don't (if don't - tell about it in TWAB and say your reasons). Community become toxic because Bungie won't listen. Bungie even claimed that they don't care about forum anymore (because current team can't provide content of same quality as it was until 3rd year in Destiny 2) and call it toxic. Results - core players go away. Yeah, new players will come and even buy deluxe for a year. But in the end they realise game is humster wheel with repeated activities and reskin weapons. I feel sorry for Sony, that they buy Bungie. And I'm really hope, that purchase won't hurt Sony too much.

          • Two thirds of the game are just not fun. Gambit got ruined for no apparent reason. PvP was great in the beginning of the season but Bungie caved to the sweats and rigged the game mode in their favor. I have high hopes for the new competitive mode but the sweats are already crying about it being competitive. They won’t stop until the mode is rigged in their favor. I think Bungie realizes this and that’s why Rose isn’t going to be achievement based but participation based.

            • We all know they don't care. You still wanna vent and write down your constructive criticism if you are like me who invested 5k hours into this game and used to have so much fun with the game. When a dev ruins the game people love, obviously people wanna express their opinion. But i am well aware that this ship isn't sinking anymore, it already sunk. They are not putting remotely enough resources into this cash cow gacha game anymore to keep it a quality and fun game. They are just milking the loyal players to stretch the time between now and their next game release. Sad but true. I wouldn't call the forums toxic considering the horrible quality we get now for a full price annual DLC title + full blown mtx store focus. No, it's the other way around. More players should state the obvious and criticise this mess of a game.

              • As a former food service worker, let me paint a word picture. Imagine going into work everyday, trying your damnedest to guarantee your customers had an enjoyable experience, and every one of them told you how much you suck at your job. No matter what you change, despite everything you try to improve on, nothing but "You suck." Especially when things unforeseen or simply beyond your control happen. And the icing on this lovely crap-cake is that the SAME CUSTOMERS keep coming back and continue saying "YOU SUCK." Now ask yourself, how long before you simply stop giving a ****, knowing that you're going to fail no matter what? If anyone is unfamiliar with the term Sisyphean task, try looking it up. It could give a little perspective on how the people at Bungie might feel.

                • Light in moderation does not mean not looking. Constructive ideas don’t always stand out. It is hard to find in the sea of hate and melodrama. Rarely do games age well. Ten years is a long time with the same game engine. In my opinion this heavily patched game is in need of an overhaul. If only to support more powerful rendering and more efficient tools. D2 didn’t have the funding. Maybe now with funding D3 is possible.

                  • I read somewhere that Bungie mentioned that they rarely come to forums due to the toxicity. Wither that is true or not. I don’t know. But it feels it. There’s a general sentiment of burn out due to a very stable rinse and repeat / intentional loot mechanics that work against you. I like many others have taken a big step back the past few weeks just to allow any excitement to come back for a new season.

                    • People say what they like without restraint because they aren’t actually saying these things to people faces. If they ever got to actually talk to the game developers, it wouldn’t resort to death threats like it did on Twitter. The power of keyboard warriors shows in the forums.

                      • They like to skimm from what I've noticed. For example, if you want their attention don't make a post with a title that's negative or insulting, and include ways to improve. So if you don't like pvp don't make a post with a title like: PVP Sucks or This Game Aids. Instead use a title like: How to improve pvp and balance lobbies. your posts shouldn't be a rant, and should talk about what the problem is and have a solution to fix the problem. Also if you make any Anti-woke posts or posts about bungie breaking their own policies, expect to have your post locked or edited by bungie. Finally, bungie rarely replies but they will skimm popular posts that make it to the top 10-15 on the board for each category so long as they follow the other rules I've mentioned. Doing this I've had a number of ideas, buffs/nerfs, reworks, and suggestions make it into the game. For instance the new Gathering Storm super is word for word some thing I posted multiple times about back in Y3-4, however it was as an exotic, then after 3.0 was announced I re-posted the idea as a new super for arc strider. The only difference is I called it lightning rod, otherwise it's 100% the same including be able to impale bosses and vehicles and shooting lightning out.

They just don't interact with the forums which is a big problem. Yeah this place is a swamp but you don't clean it by continuing to let garbage pile up. We don't WANT to use reddit to get information the OFFICIAL FORUMS should have access to. Hippy actually responded to why they do it and even talked about how it's better to reach the larger populations instead of utilizing resources to clean this place up. I get why it's like that but it's bullshit for me as an actual member of their community because I can't even tell if they care what I or anybody else says. It's so easy though. The literal first real community post hippy made asking us what we wanted for pvp and peopled seemed to respond to it really well. It doesn't even -blam!- have to be responded to by them, just knowing theres a post dedicated to our feedback that they might look over was a good thing. I think that's the first time in forum history we've actually been asked what we wanted that wasn't -blam!- to buy. Being a community manager here is very likely hell because so many loud people are -blam!- holes but the ACTUAL community doesn't want to deal with radio silence cause we got clowns dumping their trash everywhere.

                          • I believe Bungie cares. I believe Bungie look at their Business Model and see that it’s profitable. The changes we often ask for that are ignored are ignored because the cost to implement said changes would negatively impact their profit margins. I believe Bungie feels Destiny the franchise has run it’s course and it’s time they focus on the next offering. The reason why there’s still players playing is because there hasn’t ever been a console game developed that can rival the gunplay in Destiny. That in itself keeps players logging in regularly.
