Console Wars: Part Duex
Gamers, especially Xbox owners, love Phil Spencer's statements about cross play. You might think Phil magically dropped from the sky to save Microsoft in their darkest hour and free gamers from the oppression of the cold, money driven game industry. Get real folks. Phil has been a Microsoft employee for 28 years. As the head of the Xbox division, it is his job to increase Microsoft's market share.
There are no coincidences in the gaming industry. When the Xbox 360 was in the lead, Microsoft [i]never [/i]mentioned cross play. They loved buying up exclusives and required an Xbox Live Gold subscription to use the interenet. Before the visceral reaction to E3 2013, they planned on selling an Xbox One with digital only games and a 24-hour check in. How many tweets did Phil Spencer send decrying these practices? Zero. Only after the PS4 was selling almost 3:1 against the Xbox One did Microsoft start making moves that players like. They dropped the Xbox Live Gold requirement to use the internet, began working on backwards compatibility, dropped the Kinect 2.0, and dropped the price of the Xbox One to compete against the PS4. The price drop was the biggest driver of sales, and now the PS4's sales advantage has narrowed to 2:1, with the Xbox able to beat the PS4 in North America for a couple of months.
Phil's talk of cross play is all meant to drive Xbox sales. The 2:1 lead means that if gamers go where their friends go, they will buy a PS4. Cross play removes that incentive to go PS4. However, if the Xbox ever overtakes the PS4, cross play would work against the Xbox. How much would you bet that if Microsoft ever rises back to the top of the console market, they would turn off cross play and give some bs excuse like "preserving player experience with our superior network". You might say Microsoft already promotes cross play with PCs, but I respond that they limit cross play with their own Microsoft platform and not services like Steam. Xbox hardware may be a break even business or maybe even a loss, but the Windows business is pure profit. It doesn't really matter, though, because Phil never expected Sony to change the status quo and allow cross play with Xbox. His goal was to make Microsoft look good and Sony look bad. Gamers and the gaming press took the bait.
tl;dr Microsoft is still Microsoft.
[spoiler]I say Microsoft was in the lead with the Xbox 360 and that is only true for early days of last gen. The PS3 eventually caught up to the Xbox 360, with about 80M consoles sold each. Both trailed the Nintendo Wii. The Xbox 360 was considered the dominant force last gen because it had the highest attachment rate (games sold per console).[/spoiler]

This year Microsoft announced things that made the larger amount of people happy and Sony took the smaller amount. It doesn't really matter to anyone who doesn't work there. So quit with these console posts

I'm against cross play I think it's a bad idea especially once pc is in the mix but I own both consoles so I would not benefit from it at all but don't wana play FPS games against people on mouse and keyboard it's a pointless thing do have

5 RepliesAgreed. Specter's job is to do what is in the best interests of Xbox, Microsoft and its shareholders. I'm not buying his altruism act. He's doing what he's doing because he's trying to rescue Xbox from the disastrous efforts of his predecessor to bring MS's MONOPOLISTIC practices that they get away with in the PC world, and force them down the throats of console gamers. They figured they could get away with it because they didn't take Sony seriously as a viable alternative....only to have gamers give them the One-Finger Salute when XB1 launched.....and go running to Sony's superior product and more consumer friendly business model. Specter is only singing the tune he is right now because 4 years have seen MS go from market dominance, to absolutely getting their skulls caved-in by Sony.....and having alienated a LOT of their former customers. So he's not only being confronted with people who are choosing a competitor's product over his.....but with people who are now OVERTLY hostile to the Xbox brand....and he's trying to soothe that hostility in an effort to eventually win them back.

[/quote] PS4 cross-play already exists with the Steam version of games. Sonys denied cross-play with Xbox. So let me get this straight, PC - Xbox cross-play ONLY exists if the PC version is the Windows Store version... Meanwhile PS - PC get to enjoy cross-play outside of the Xbox ecosystem. Soo Microsoft are trying to lure BOTH of the versions into there own ecosystem? Even tho its been working fine without them for decades??? No wonder they got told to shove off.

Sure. Who cares? Microsoft has a very consumer friendly goal now because of Phil Spencer. People also need to understand that Xbox has a different goal now. They aren't trying to get in front of Sony (don't take that to mean they don't want it). The Xbox becoming a brand rather than a console is something that only the Xbox can do. It's in the early stages but the UWP is [i]very[/i] consumer friendly and spans two platforms.

3 RepliesI agree with your main premise. However, why does everyone assume because they didn't like the download only policy that nobody did. I hate that they didn't stick to it, but then again i and many others don't sell back games and their wording was terrible.

While it's disappointing that I won't be able to play with my friends on PS4 without repaying for and playing games, I can understand it. It isn't worth it for Sony.

1 ReplyYeah, I think this really applies to companies unilaterally. All companies at some point start acting like they're all about their customers in an attempt to win more customers. If anyone believes that Phil or any head guy at a company really cares about them they're delusional. MS is getting killed in console sales and everything they're doing is an effort to try to turn that around. I will say that regardless of their motivations, I'm glad they're making these decisions and I'm hoping that even if by some miracle xbox catches or surpasses sony (which I doubt happens for a long time, if ever) that they keep this line of thinking.
