Agreed. Specter's job is to do what is in the best interests of Xbox, Microsoft and its shareholders. I'm not buying his altruism act. He's doing what he's doing because he's trying to rescue Xbox from the disastrous efforts of his predecessor to bring MS's MONOPOLISTIC practices that they get away with in the PC world, and force them down the throats of console gamers. They figured they could get away with it because they didn't take Sony seriously as a viable alternative....only to have gamers give them the One-Finger Salute when XB1 launched.....and go running to Sony's superior product and more consumer friendly business model. Specter is only singing the tune he is right now because 4 years have seen MS go from market dominance, to absolutely getting their skulls caved-in by Sony.....and having alienated a LOT of their former customers. So he's not only being confronted with people who are choosing a competitor's product over his.....but with people who are now OVERTLY hostile to the Xbox brand....and he's trying to soothe that hostility in an effort to eventually win them back.

 • Wow a company is truing to do what is profitable, who would have thunk it. It seems we cant all be nintendo. But seriously of course it comes down to money but this is not always a bad thing, greed it painted in a very bad light and to be fair it can be bad but it can also be used for good. Greed forces companies to make things that consumers want which can in turn force them to do things that we view as simply nice for use like giving out free games each month. Also while having a monopoly can be nice for a company it generally doesnt work out, and companies like microsoft know this, which is why when apple was newer and going bankrupt, microsoft game them money, because having a competitor to seemingly fight with can make you a lot more money in the long run and having a partner makes it much easier to keep newer companies out of the market. Having a monopoly poses all sorts of problems, first off it makes any potential openings for something new to come in glaringly obvious (something like the steam machine may have been able to succeed against just microsoft alone), second it makes your company an extremely easy target for both the public and the government, which do not like monopolies and have the power to legal get rid of them (as we have tried to do in the past). So by having a competitor you help yourself build a brand of you and your people against them and their people, and can more easily squash new comers and avoid potential public and legal problems. Monopolies are nice but controlled competition is far nicer (and looks nicer).

 • I could say Phil Spencer is doing great work with the Xbox, but the Xbox isn't closing the gap with the PS4.

 • I think Spencer (I don't know why I keep calling him Specter) IS doing a very good job of rehabilitating the Xbox brand----and Microsoft----in the eyes of consumers. But it will be YEARS before he manages to reverse the catastrophe that his predecessor set in motion. People ***tolerate*** MS's business practices in the PC world, simply because they DO have an effective monopoly and there realy isn't anywhere you can really go if you don't like what MS is serving up. But Xbox made the catastrophic mistake of trying to bring that same attitude to console gaming.....only to realize that market DOMINANCE is not the same as an ABSENCE of a market, because you have monopolized it. So Xbox's customers just said "-blam!- you!" and left to go play Sony.

 •
But Xbox made the catastrophic mistake of trying to bring that same attitude to console gaming
It wasn't just Xbox that Microsoft screwed up. Microsoft cleaned house around the time the Xbox One launched, replacing Balmer and folks on down the chain. Bad corporate culture leads to bad products. Remember when Microsoft made a phone OS? Remember Windows 8?
