PvP: The above average scrub perspective*

My favourite type of matchmaking is SBMM. I love closely contested matches where my performance impacts the outcome of the match. That’s what motivates me and that’s where I have the most fun. I hate getting stomped and I get bored when I’m stomping someone else. I try to improve as a player, but it’s not my main motivation to play. I prefer loose SBMM in casual playlists and strict SBMM in competitive playlists. There are plenty of players similar to me, but there are also plenty of players who are not. Many players prefer CBMM. From reading lots of comments on these forums, here are a few things I feel differentiate a CBMM player from a SBMM player (I’m going to stick to ‘motivation to play’, rather than the technical preferences of queue times, connections etc). Average CBMM players enjoy a variety of matches (including stomping those well below them and getting stomped by those well above). Confident players can experiment with off-meta weapons and builds, without severely affecting their performance. Over time, improvement is visible in matches, through the frequency of kills, assists and deaths. Highly skilled players see the fruits of their labour, when they routinely dominate matches. A lot of the CBMM/SBMM ‘debate’ ignores any appreciation for what motivates different types of players. Many forum posts on this topic are so caught up in hurling insults at the other side, they completely undermine any comment being made. If you genuinely care about Destiny PvP, you will surely want the playerbase to be as healthy as possible. That means looking beyond merely our own preferences. There are people attempting to steer the conversation this way. Unfortunately, they are currently being drowned out by people who are only interested in their side ‘winning’.
*I’m a 1.4kd in Elimination, 0.6kd in Trials
I am a good enough scrub for what I enjoy and don’t enjoy and I support SBMM for daily play while rotating and event style modes or playlists for CBMM. This way players can improve consistently to their behavior of play and face any and everybody when events or modes rotation happen due to or with population change.

      • I'd call myself an above average scrub as well, not amazing, but pretty good. My only gripe currently is it feels like the SBMM can't decide where to stick me. Some matches I'm getting paired against absolute monsters. And some matches are pretty solid and fun. I'm hoping with time it balances out a bit more, cause it's pretty brutal when the game thinks I'm a god and matchmakes me as such! Aside from that I'm eager to see what changes with time

What I mean by this is if you read one of the TWABS, Bungie states that the number of players leaving due to poorly matched lobbies has gone up 12% and this currently has everyone's underpants in a twist. CBMM is.. something of a behemoth of its own, but the problem is that you don't get matched with players equal to your skill level which can be either stressful or frustrating depending on the side you're on. Trials is a HUGE part of why SBMM needs to be in effect and tuned because as it stands, I've paired with below my skill level in that mode (according to Trials report a third party tracking website, my overall Trials KD is a 1.34) So in many ways I understand the argument for wanting one or the other. If you want my honest opinion SBMM is needed, just needs to be tuned right and before Trials comes back this season.

But if you really want to do better, you take the beating and learn how it works. Because if you truly want to do better, then you will. The people who want SB over CB had every opportunity to do better, play Rumble to practice, play freelance Survival, make their own stacks, etc. But they didn't because they ultimately don't care about doing better. Majority of them play less than 10 games a week. The dedicated players wanted CB because they've already got their skills developed and wait for Trials to fight each other. There are outliers yes but not many. TLDR the people who want SB, don't care to try and improve. The people who wanted CB wanted to use Control to chill before going into the endgame. And unfortunately, the casuals were listened to instead of the dedicated population.

            • I've learned to play better by matching against players way above my skill. Some take it as a learning experience others get insulted by it. I don't enjoy playing against players of equal or worse skill. Its boring. I've always enjoyed versusing harder players as it makes me play better. Now I'll just play down to match the skill of the players the game is putting me up against.

It’s funny how changing match making on ONE mode has made some unhinged. PVP streamers were making videos about the curb stomping stacks 2 years ago. They said it wasn’t healthy for PVP and if it continued there would be changes. Here we are and that’s what’s happened. Lol like they had crystal balls to see the future.

I actually don't notice much of a difference between cbmm and sbmm. I do well, do average and get stomped in both arenas. I also have a 51% win percentage over 4600+ games played. Seems balanced to me. I think it makes sense to have cbmm when the population is low and sbmm when the population is larger.

The issue is the so called sweats. When cbmm was here they berated and insulted those they felt beneath them and basically hit them with the get good and downvoted any mention of sbmm while spewing the same crap. When it's their turn and the difference here is we have numbers it's seen as unfair that we do the exactly the same to them and they have the gall to call us hypocrites while acknowledging and even double downing on the fact that they are pieces of crap and just selfish. Sbmm is the equalizer and its fair , every shooter has it. I respect you for trying to extend the olive branch but the top brass is irredeemable and and just anti destiny. They told us to quit if we don't like so I'll hand them the same glass and tell them to drink up. Most players are not in favor of cbmm only the 1%.

                    • When I first started PvP I always ranked bottom, everyone was better than me. I put in hours to learn and practice and over time my game improved. There were still players better than me but I was able to rank ok the top half consistently. That system is fine imo. From my perspective The only issue has been putting solos against stacks and lobby balancing.

                      • Personally I don't mind if there's sbmm or cbmm. I get both good and bad matches in both. I join matches in progress in both, I get invisible players for an X amount of times in both. What I think rather unenjoyable for me is crossplay. When it was first introduced it didn't seem all that bad, but with each season since there seems to be more "lag"/ghost bullets/melees whiffing etc.

                        • Well you will be surprised to know sbmm is not working in Destiny. I would rather play players who are better than me, that is how I have always gotten better.
