My Thoughts and Theories on Each Race in Destiny

The following are my ideas and speculations on what each race in Destiny is, and how they came into being. I tend to let my creativity run when it comes to things like this, so some of these ideas may seem farfetched or even impossible, but hey – it’s all for fun. NOTE: There is a TL:DR at the bottom, if you don’t want to read the whole thing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Humanity: Humans are obviously humans. I doubt anyone needs much explanation on this, and I don’t have much speculation to offer. What we do know is that the arrival of the Traveler sparked a golden age for humanity, and it granted humanity with special ‘powers’ that we have heard referred to as “The Traveler’s Gift”. I am lead to believe that the technology of the Traveler isn’t what sparked the Golden Age, but rather it was the effects that it had on us. Perhaps along with special powers, the Traveler granted us higher intelligence? With this intelligence the speed of technological advance increased, and while all of the technology is of human origin, although the ability to invent new things at such a rapid pace is given to us by the Traveler. The Awoken: The Awoken are certainly not human, or at least completely human. The title “Awoken” leans towards the idea that they were once asleep, or dormant. Perhaps the Awoken are the offspring of a mutation in the human genome. Let’s say that 30% of Humanity had this mutation when the Traveler arrived. For reasons unknown, the effect that the Traveler had on humans affected those with this mutation differently; this resulted in the different appearance. The differences could go beyond the physical. Perhaps the Awoken have a stronger connection to the powers of the Traveler, but didn’t receive the IQ boost that the rest of humanity did? Maybe they did? I personally have no interest in playing as the Awoken, so I haven’t spent too much time theorizing how they came to be. The Exo: I have two theories on the Exo. As I currently think I will be playing one, I’ve put the most time into making a creative backstory for them. (Theory #1): My first theory on the Exo, is that they are of alien origin. I believe the Exo were once a race of biological organisms, which have transcended the limitations of biological life. If the biological predecessors to the Exo were to digitize the contents of their brains and place them in bodies that are 100% synthetic, then the limitations that biological life presents are eliminated. Each individual Exo would still be unique, by retaining all that they were before the transfer processes. The Exo would still feel emotion as humans do, because they still retain a biological sentience. The only difference being where the processes that determine this sentience are executed: in an organic brain or an electronic processor. Now this theory raises some questions: Why do they look like humans? What reason do they have to interfere with “lower” biological lifeforms? Why are they helping us? I can’t quite answer these questions, but that adds to the fun of pre-launch speculation. NOTE: An alternate version of this theory is that humans are the life-forms that transcended biology, but not everyone wants to lose biological limitations, which is why not every human is an Exo. (Theory #2): Although in my second theory the Exo are still aliens, it does differ quite a bit from my first theory. In this second theory I believe that the Exo are a form of life, but more like formless souls. Humanity built these creatures robotic exoskeletons, so that these creatures could have a physical form we could interact with. This theory answers many of the above questions that the other theory raised: They look like us because we built them. They are helping us because we gave them a physical form. I feel that this theory makes more sense in the Destiny universe, because “soul meets robot” sounds like something straight out of Mythic Sci-Fi, doesn’t it? As an additional detail, if you look at the concept art of the Exo, it looks like there is a soul behind his eyes. Now that’s just how I interpreted it, but still. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TL:DR Humanity – Traveler jumpstarted technology Awoken – different species of human that branched off a mutation and the Traveler Exo – Either beings that transcended biological life or they are formless aliens taking a robot body So, those are my thoughts and theories on the races of Destiny. Each one is complete speculation, and I thought up each of these as a means to satisfy my craving for moar Destiny. If you have any theories or ideas of your own, feel free to post them below. ;)

Only the strongest survived and because of this natural selection was way sped up and we are better than we were before. Awoken- 2 theories on them #1 They completely gave themselves over to the traveler and have a better connection to him. Their spiritual transcendence has caused their physical body to grow weaker, but their minds have grown immensely. They are free-thinking and unconstrained from the norms of human thought. They do not see strange or weird, only another idea that is so vastly interesting. They have lost touch with their inhibitions and sometimes become apathetic to other life forms because they are only a small speck of dust in the grand cosmic theater. #2 During the golden age, a group of scientists found an ancient alien artifact. They were studying it when it connected to them. the artifact awoke a dormant part of their brain and enlightened them on the alien civilization that had created the artifact. They fled humanity and began their own civilization. When the great fall came it also targeted the awoken they were forced back along with the humans and now coexist with them in the last city. They are offspring of the original group of scientists and are studious, curious, and inquisitive of the world. Their civilization mimicked that of the alien civilization that had bestowed them their new bodies. However they have still retained their human sides. Their two natures have combined to form a strange, but beautiful race of enlightened people. Exos also 2 theories #1 They are soldiers from before the fall that had given their body to the military. They were transformed into these robotic-forms. They fought and explored in places no man could go. They served for hundreds of years. They watched as friends and family slowly died away. They were shunned by regular humans because of their form and seeming alien nature. Some chose to shut themselves down to avoid the agony of immortal life. After the fall, they were found by the humans and reactivated. They were asked to serve humanity once more and bring it back to its former glory. They are extremely wise and experienced, but have slowly lost their human emotions and manners. They have become their own race. #2 They are repaired humans that have been fatally injured. Some are from before the fall others are new. Exos are the dead brought back and are not entirely right. the older ones have suffered years of exemption from human experiences such as love and fear and happiness and have only begun to hate the body in which they have been trapped.

      • I love your second theory for the Exo. I was thinking that the Awoken are humans that responded in an extreme way to the space magic of the traveler and so awoke their dormant powers and transformed into completely different beings. Exo's could be people that saw the technology of the traveler and decided to give up their humanity for the power that the traveler would give them

      • I have a couple ideas too. Humanity: The majority of the survivors. During the dark days they played with the cards they where dealt, and ended up surviving. They are the majority on Earth. the other races (although still human) have been empowered by them, so they may all survive. The Awoken: During the fall of the Golden Age, some sought to preserve themself. They entered a state cryogenic freeze, fully expecting to be awakened once the clamity had past. But many millenia past before they where discovered, deep in the ruins of the old cities. When they were awoken they had no recolection of what they were. Just where they came from. They are relics of the old age. Time again they have tried to explain to us their tech, of the modifications made to our self. What these modifications used to do, we do not know and they have forgoten. The most obvious fact is it turns the skin blue. But now they provide a strong link to the traveler. The Exo: In our dark days, some looked to science to persevere. They decided in order to fight their enemy, they would have to become something stronger. So they did. These humans reconstructed their dna at the base levels to produce more useful things out of food. When injected with a healthy portion of nanobots, they created the exo. Biological machines. The nanobots gather the carbon strands and weave them into a skin-like substance stronger than steel. The nanobots also reinforce and support the mussles and bones, giving the exo above avarage strength. These humans are forever encased in these bodies, only the most invasive surgery, or violent explosion could possibly separate them. As such they have become one with machine these are my theories and i thank you for reading

        • I dont think Bungie would make the other two races of another species other than Human. Bungie has stated that Destiny is Humanities story of survival, and I think that straying away from that would make the threat of aliens a bit less engaging. I think that the Exo's are Humans who through advancements in technology, have discarded their old biological forms for timeless robotic bodies as a means of helping humanity as long as they can.

          • Very Good Ideas. Here's my spin on it: Humans: Standard, average Lifespan. The ones that are Guardians are Selected after a very extensive Training Program. Awoken: Sort of a Meta-Human. A side-effect of the new-found abilities is being more Fragile, so the lifespan is Significantly less than that of Normal Humans. Even though they are Guardians, they defend their Shrine, or the place where they can not fear physical damage Exo: The Definition of Post-Human. These former Scientists and Engineers paid a terrible sacrifice in order to preserve the Ideas and History of humanity. In exchange for their mechanical forms and database of knowledge, they must live forever to preserve, update, and protect it. They are Guardians of a different sense, and protect the Massive databases of the past

The theory one of the exo is called mind-uploading, before this topic I was REALLY REALLY intrigued by it, it's an estage of the transhumanism movement check the link if you are interested about it, I repit it again, I really like this idea, mankind someday will make it true, to achieve perfection ;)

              • I think the Exo race might be old man made war machines designed to fight what ever tried to exterminate the human race, or maybe they're repurposed worker robots with advanced AI.

In regards to Exos, I am leaning towards your alternative to theory number #1: Exos are the result of a human's decision to forsake his or her fleshly body through some type of essence transfer. I differ though on the positive spin you place on the process by using the word transcended describe it. When asked about "Whether or not games have a responsibility to show the seedy side of humans, Joe Staten stated to Gamespot UK:
...we want players to be a hero. And if you're a hero, then that means you're largely on the side of good. And you might make a racial choice to be an Exo, which is artistically and thematically a little more sinister and dark.
Now granted, I will admit that I'm reaching deep and reading in between the lines here. However, with this quote, it just doesn't strike me that Bungie is going with a transcendence vibe for the Exos. Maybe more along the lines of what happened with Alphonse Elric in Full Metal Alchemist. It's not a perfect comparison, but there's a distinct theme with Alphonse that there was a significant loss in transferring his essence to a suit of armor. Stylistically, I guess I am envisioning the Awoken as more the "transcendent" race, humanity as somewhere in the middle, and exos having a more darker vibe. However, I can see with the overall "hopeful tone" why could both races could be seen as transcendent. If this is the case, I wonder if there is any racial tension from the distinctly different paths? Transcedence is largely in the eye of the beholder...I can't wait for more details on backstory!

                • The issue I have with your first Exo theory is that it would be impossible for them to reproduce and there would only be a finite number of individuals. Once they are killed/destroyed then the population is one step closer to extinction. They could produce the robot but there would be no brain to control it. If your species was threatened by extinction, that would not be the best way to go to survive. I think they are either cyborg humans or aliens of some kind, but are more organic than machine. The name Exo makes me think they are named for wearing a distinctive exoskeleton armour, which is simply an external protective layer, perhaps in order to breathe and enhance their natural abilities. I liked the theory I read that they were severely injured in battle and were fitted with cybernetics to keep them alive, like Darth Vader or General Grievous.

                    • as usual, excellent theories, Grav. I might have an interesting theory on the Exo's though. What if the Exo's were already Guardians but were terribly injured in battle and the only way that they could survive was being encased in an Exo? I think that is highly plausible.
