Human-ye good 'ol run of the mill survival, all odds stacked against them, inferior but superior humans. We somehow manage to survive even though we shouldn't have. Only the strongest survived and because of this natural selection was way sped up and we are better than we were before. Awoken- 2 theories on them #1 They completely gave themselves over to the traveler and have a better connection to him. Their spiritual transcendence has caused their physical body to grow weaker, but their minds have grown immensely. They are free-thinking and unconstrained from the norms of human thought. They do not see strange or weird, only another idea that is so vastly interesting. They have lost touch with their inhibitions and sometimes become apathetic to other life forms because they are only a small speck of dust in the grand cosmic theater. #2 During the golden age, a group of scientists found an ancient alien artifact. They were studying it when it connected to them. the artifact awoke a dormant part of their brain and enlightened them on the alien civilization that had created the artifact. They fled humanity and began their own civilization. When the great fall came it also targeted the awoken they were forced back along with the humans and now coexist with them in the last city. They are offspring of the original group of scientists and are studious, curious, and inquisitive of the world. Their civilization mimicked that of the alien civilization that had bestowed them their new bodies. However they have still retained their human sides. Their two natures have combined to form a strange, but beautiful race of enlightened people. Exos also 2 theories #1 They are soldiers from before the fall that had given their body to the military. They were transformed into these robotic-forms. They fought and explored in places no man could go. They served for hundreds of years. They watched as friends and family slowly died away. They were shunned by regular humans because of their form and seeming alien nature. Some chose to shut themselves down to avoid the agony of immortal life. After the fall, they were found by the humans and reactivated. They were asked to serve humanity once more and bring it back to its former glory. They are extremely wise and experienced, but have slowly lost their human emotions and manners. They have become their own race. #2 They are repaired humans that have been fatally injured. Some are from before the fall others are new. Exos are the dead brought back and are not entirely right. the older ones have suffered years of exemption from human experiences such as love and fear and happiness and have only begun to hate the body in which they have been trapped.

 • I think your 1st Exo theory is probably the coolest most interesting that I've seen, although it it does mean there is a finite number of them.
#1 They completely gave themselves over to the traveler and have a better connection to him. They have lost touch with their inhibitions and sometimes become apathetic to other life forms because they are only a small speck of dust in the grand cosmic theater.
Interesting. The idea of "giving themselves to the Traveler" seems kind of cult-ish, but considering the game is Mythic Sci-Fi, some religious or spiritual mumbo-jumbo makes since. You definitely put another twist on it. Lore wise, the part of the Awoken being physically weaker makes since, but it's been confirmed that each race will play the same in the game itself. Excluding that one part, it's definitely a plausible theory that could be implemented in-game.
#2 During the golden age, a group of scientists found an ancient alien artifact. They were studying it when it connected to them. the artifact awoke a dormant part of their brain and enlightened them on the alien civilization that had created the artifact. Their two natures have combined to form a strange, but beautiful race of enlightened people.
Somewhat similar to my theory on the Awoken. While my theory is along the lines of the Travelers effect on people, and yours is along the lines of knowledge granted by an alien artifact, both variations of the Awoken spawned from the Human species. My only question for this is why the fall of humanity forced the Awoken back to the Last City, if they went off and started their own civilization? I'm not trying to disprove your theory if I'm coming off that way, I'm just curious.
#1 They are soldiers from before the fall that had given their body to the military. You said that some of the Exo shutdown to avoid the agony that humans caused them, I'm curious as to why the Exo would help them after re-activation? Again, just curious.
#2 They are repaired humans that have been fatally injured. Some are from before the fall others are new. Exos are the dead brought back and are not entirely right. the older ones have suffered years of exemption from human experiences such as love and fear and happiness and have only begun to hate the body in which they have been trapped.
This is the Exo theory I've seen pop up the most across the forums. While it's an interesting theory, I personally don't see it as providing enough lore for a character race that will have a 10+ year life-cycle. I'm curious as to how you answer my questions, but good theories. The Awoken theories were a pleasant surprise, as most of the theories I've seen about character races are about the Exo. It's nice to see a few fresh theories on a race that I haven't seen talked about much.

 • For your question about the awoken, I was thinking that the awoken were still human, even though they have been mutated. When whatever knocked us down hit us, it also hit them because of their relation to us. We still had contact with them in the golden age, but they were their own entity. For the Exos, they didn't shut down because of a hate towards humanity, but a hate for the loss of their own humanity. They watched as humans lived and died, but also how they loved and were loved in return. When they lost their human bodies, they also lost biochemical impulses of a human. They still think and feel, but they have lost love. They were so disheartened by the loss of their humanity that they shut themselves down. They weren't needed because humanity was experiencing a golden age. They still will protect the human race. You never truly know what you have until you have lost it. The exos fight so that the humans can experience the lives that they gave away.

I'd say that this is definitely a plausible theory, and an interesting one as well. I like the idea that the lose of their humanity led to a stronger desire to protect humanity itself. I've seen multiple theories that the Exo are ruthless war-machines out to kill everything, but you've added the possibility that they are only fighting for what they wish they could have.
