Very Good Ideas. Here's my spin on it:
Humans: Standard, average Lifespan. The ones that are Guardians are Selected after a very extensive Training Program.
Awoken: Sort of a Meta-Human. A side-effect of the new-found abilities is being more Fragile, so the lifespan is Significantly less than that of Normal Humans. Even though they are Guardians, they defend their Shrine, or the place where they can not fear physical damage
Exo: The Definition of Post-Human. These former Scientists and Engineers paid a terrible sacrifice in order to preserve the Ideas and History of humanity. In exchange for their mechanical forms and database of knowledge, they must live forever to preserve, update, and protect it. They are Guardians of a different sense, and protect the Massive databases of the past

Interesting take on it, each one guarding something different, rather than protecting one common interest.

Yup, but all of these things are conveniently located in the Last City, so the protection of the City is still the Priority, but for different reasons.

I must say, you've presented me with the first theory I've seen where each race is out to protect a common goal, but for different reasons. Very creative spin you put on it. I like.

Thanks. I can't really think of a reason for Normal Humans other than Defending the City or possibly expanding it, and the idea Exos having to spend eternity protecting History and seeing their Human and Awoken Friends die was more of a curse, since they are supposed to be the "Darker" race of the three.
