NRA has tons of educational resources as do a great many other groups, just google them. I'd 100% say that if you want a gun for your home or for the range there's no problem whatsoever, in fact I'd encourage that. The only sticking point is whether or not you want to be able to carry daily. For me, that's not really an option given the Geography and knowing that my states absolutely blows. Businesses can demand you not carry and city/local ordinances can also place restrictions. So brush up on your local laws. It may be smart to just talk to your local police departments what they know.
Also on the part about your race, I don't know about your particular situation but every police department I've ever heard of has tons of black guys working there. Why would that be an issue for you?

Since I live in western NY, the local laws concerning guns are looser than, say, in NYC. Some things I know related to my current job and future career. For example, I wouldn't bring a gun to school, even for self-defense, since I plan on becoming a teacher. That said, I wouldn't exactly be naive enough to be unable to defend myself in the event of a mass shooting. As for how my skin color would be an issue for me, there have been far too many black men and women on the news being killed by cops for me to take any chances. Many of them have had standard comments explaining away their deaths like Michael Brown, ("He was a thug") Tamir Rice, ("He looked like an adult carrying a gun. How did I know he was carrying a BB gun in a park in an open carry state?") or the gentleman in Florida who was a caretaker for a man with special needs. ("Sorry, we meant to hit the big, black guy holding the toy truck.") This is not to say that I hate police officers, a conclusion I imagine some have drawn based on this. I judge each individual officer on their own actions, rather than by their uniform. To do otherwise would be extremely hypocritical of me, as member of a demographic that has been discriminated against for years in this country. However, I am wary of police until they show their worth to me. If you've ever heard the saying "praise God, but tie your camels tight," there's a different wording that can be appropriate in my situation: call the cops to defend your home, but ready your weapon.

I'm in a similar boat. My state has a long list of banned weapons, but it wouldn't be impossible for me to buy one. From what I know my state is a "may issue" state meaning that depending on who's in office at the time, you might be approved or you won't ever get approved even if you are exceedingly competent and of exemplary character. But since my career path will likely be putting in places that will explicitly disallow me to be armed, so it's something I'm not too worried about at the moment. On the skin color thing regarding the news, people of all sorts of races get shot by police every year that we never hear about. And overwhelming people have cumulatively millions of encounters with police that never amount to anything. I think you're worrying a little too much about something that's been hyped up by people and corporations that just want to make more money from sensationalism. Don't let their lies hold you back.
