Pros and cons of owning a gun while black
I'm honestly considering buying a gun, in spite of recent developments and the horrific school shootings in recent years. The problem is that, as a black man, I am more likely to be seen as a dangerous thug for even considering it, much less owning it. If someone were to ask me "why not just not buy the gun and call the police?" I would respond with the case of Philando Castile, a responsible gun owner who was shot by a police officer. Obviously, I would want to take a firearm safety course so I know what I'm doing with it. So, what are your thoughts?

Hey bud, i'm of color to. I say get one and if you come in contact with the police just let them know what you have and make sure they are not surprised. I 100% understand your concerns, but if something does happen i'd rather be protected and i'm not even a gun guy myself.

You have every right to own a gun to protect your self and family just make sure to tell any police officers you come in contact with that you have it so it's not a surprise

4 OdpowiedziBuy it. In my state of NY you are required if pulled over to tell the office you are armed and where it is. Keep your hands on the wheel at all times and follow his instructions. He will then disarm you. He will then ask for the permit. Stay calm and be polite. Don't mouth off or get an attitude and your stop will go smooth.

IMO after Castile said he had a firearm as he was reaching for something and the cop ordered him to stop, the confusion and stress of the situation is what set it off. I don't entirely blame Castile. But, this was an incident taking place in a parked car, and no matter who you are the police are on high alert for any weapons. Now whether you own a firearm or not, police are still on high alert for ambush 911 calls. The only approach is calm compliance with the officer, and everything will be crystal. So go exercise your God given 2nd Amendment Right.

Definitely go for it. The good thing is, if you don't ever feel comfortable with it, you can always sell it (firearms are excellent at retaining value). Definitely take some training courses, it's not just your life you hold in your hands. Dude, get you one. I am a white dude and I don't sweat other people having guns, especially if they are willing to do the training, no matter their race. Just because you buy a gun, it doesn't mean you are going to become the next Thugnificent.

I think it depends on where you live and who [i]you[/i] are. If you live in a “thuggy” area (no offense if you do) then it could look a little questionable. If you walk around with your butt hangin out of your pants, than you could look questionable. If you dress and act like a respectable dude, then that’s not so questionable. Again, I think the area you live in would a pretty impact (at least it seems that way to me). That’s just my two cents.

I'd 100% say that if you want a gun for your home or for the range there's no problem whatsoever, in fact I'd encourage that. The only sticking point is whether or not you want to be able to carry daily. For me, that's not really an option given the Geography and knowing that my states absolutely blows. Businesses can demand you not carry and city/local ordinances can also place restrictions. So brush up on your local laws. It may be smart to just talk to your local police departments what they know. Also on the part about your race, I don't know about your particular situation but every police department I've ever heard of has tons of black guys working there. Why would that be an issue for you?

You are in a tricky situation. A good guy trying to protect himself in a f'd up society. You want to trust the police to do their jobs but they themselves are known to be less than reliable and for a black man calling the police is a gamble with your own freedom/life. I'm not saying all cops are bad, just that there are those cops who abuse their authority with their racest views. Its a tough call as to what to do. But we are talking about your personal safety in terms of life or death. So my advice for you is [u]yes[/u], get a gun and get the necessary training courses for it. You should, depending on which state you are in, try to get a concealed carry permit. If you find yourself in a situation where the cops are involved leave it to them, don't try to help. If they approach you be compliant and cool, don't panic and don't get confrontational [b][u]at all.[/u][/b] Even if the cops are in the wrong and you start feeling upset and want to resist, [b][u]DON'T[/u][/b]. Don't give them a reason to do anything to you and get a lawyer immediately after. The gun is for your personal safety and it shouldn't be treated as anything other than that. Just keep your wits about you and never lose your cool so that you'll be able to assess whatever situation you find yourself in. Just remember, [u]Don't try to be a hero[/u]. Its about staying alive and how to handle each situation to achieve that. Even if you have to endure some inconveniences at times.

It's going to somewhat depend on your area. It's not just your skin color. It's your behavior, your age, what you wear, etc. If I see a white man wearing a white sleeveless t, and low pants with a glock hanging out of his crotch, I'm not going to be fearful he will kill me, but I would bet it's probably not legal. If his skin was black, or Asian, or Hispanic, it wouldn't change how I think. Get your safety courses. Whether the officer is racist, new or experienced follow certain guidelines. If you get pulled over or stopped on the road by a cop...say, I have a registered gun on my person, or wherever it is, while keeping both hands on the steering wheel or on crossed on your chest. If he asks for you to give it to him or whatever, dont! Say, "if it's ok, I'd rather step out of my vehicle and allow you to remove it yourself for your own protection and peace of mind. I dont mind waiting while you call for another officer if you feel warranted." This isnt just about your skin color. I'm white, and if I owned a gun that's how I would handle it, even if it infringes on my rights. I dont want to die. And we all have to understand cops understand a gun can kill very easily. That's why they get so buffudled around others with them. They are people. People who are trained to see the worst in people and defend against it. Most people arent dangerous but that's hard for a cop to know about a stranger in under a minute. Its logic. Just be careful. You wont have an issue if you just cooperate. Also. Always pull over in a public area. You are allowed to keep driving, while obeying all traffic laws, to a get to a more congested place. You can even call the police station while driving, on bluetooth to tell the dispatcher you plan to pull over in a public area if its far, or just drive to the police station. I've done this before and havnt had an issue after the cop yells and I explained why I kept driving, then he moves on from it. Just be smart. Be responsible. Your skin, does not in any way define if you're ready for a fire arm in America. The only thing your skin defines is your skin color.

More white people get killed by police every year, if you want to get technical. Look it up. Maybe buy an education instead of a firearm.

Also don't buy any .40 S&W guns, I'd advise a normal 9mm or a .45 ACP for pistols, or a .38, .357 or .44 for a revolver, for rifles do a 5.56 (.223 works too), or 7.62x39 since ammo is cheaper. Or for a shotgun just do a 12 gauge.

First and foremost, take that safety class!!!! Bring your family with you (or at least the wife).

Take gun safety courses, get all the necessary paperwork and stuff you need in your state, then get a gun if that’s what you really want. As far as police are concerned, just obey all gun laws to the T and you should be fine. If you are being searched, informed the officer that you are armed, then slowly raise your hands and tell the officer where to find the firearm. DON’T pick up the gun for any reason while an officer is around, and do whatever a cop tells you no matter what. Better to get arrested for nothing than shot for nothing. Also don’t carry a gun in your car. Wasp spray is more effective for defense in your car. Seriously.
