"Are hand cannons just a bungie troll?"
It's clear Bungie had a plan for them at one time. But, now..., I don't think they have a clue. I mean, why is it now we can have a 'hand cannons' as a primary and a 'sidearm' as a secondary? Both are short-barrel-pistol-grip weapons....

Both are meant to be close range. Don't use both at the same time if you don't like having two close range weapons. If you won't give up hand cannons, try a fusion rifle. Takes a bit of practice to get pre-charging right, but it'll help in further ranges.

You see the fireteam fighting Cabal, and the hunter using an auto rifle. He then whips out a hand cannon, fires off about six shots, which appear to penetrate/bypass/otherwise ignore the Phalanx shields and detonate the targets like the Firefly perk. Then you see him reload.
I don't believe the hunter is using Golden Gun with Combustion and Keyhole, because in other trailers from the same time period, you see that super work the way it does now, goofy "hey look at my flaming gun" activation animation and all...
Me, personally, I'd LOVE to be able to rock a scout rifle primary and hand cannon special. Bonus points if they make the scout look like a lever-action carbine. :)

I do think that if they made hand cannons secondary from the start that would have alleviated a lot of the thorn/last word issues with year one, also forcing people to choose between a hand cannon secondary and a shotgun or whatever. However at this point it doesn't make much sense to have them in the same slot, especially considering how neutered hand cannons are now.

Ironically they started out in the game as a secondary weapon. Bungie found people weren't using them in playtests, so they buffed them and moved them to the primary slot. Now I feel like they need to be moved back to the secondary slot... Though there are a few newer handcannons I like.

Because Bungie apparently hates the term "pistol" and will do everything they can to circumvent it.
