Fixing Destiny, Part 1: Light Levels- trash them

I agree with your general idea

I like it as is

I have another idea to add on, or fix the problem

PAUSE. Don't say jack shit yet. Okay, got your attention? Good. Now, Before I go on about how I despise light levels, and why I want them removed, I'd like to explain what I'm doing. Over the years, I've played many games, and many alpha's/betas. I've talked frequently on the forums throughout said games lifespan with both fellow players and developers, and I noticed something, and something great: discussion between both groups (the players, and not just from one angle, but as many as possible, and all developers who are working on that particular thing) brings greatness to the game, and the faster this communication starts, the better. With this in mind, I'm going to make a series of posts (frequency of the posts will be whenever I feel like it, so if you want to see more of my opinion, either PM me, or wait :P) giving my opinion on pieces of the game in which I want to discuss, and not just to one particular group, but to all (yes, I'm saying that I want EVERYBODY to give their opinion, even the devs). But, please, at least read the entire post before posting. Also, as one last note, I'd like to stress this: Under no circumstances are these to be taken as end all solutions to fix the game. They are my opinion, and since I'm just a mortal, imperfect human, I can't make a perfect solution for everything. Although, I'm going to try damn hard to get as close as I can. And everyone else can hopefully fill in the gaps. With that said, let's get started: My first post as the title says is about Light levels. Now, if you're not brain dead, or is just horrible at figuring out someone view point from a title of an opinion piece, I hate light levels. They make it to where they force the use of an item that you might not want to use in order to have a higher level, and therefore have a better chance of surviving things. In my opinion, I would just get rid of them. It unnecessarily slows down character progression, especially for PVP players who have no intention of doing raids (and having to deal with RNG to possibly have to wait for weeks just to get the gear necessary), and it limits choice of picking the gear you find is better suited to your play style (the raid gear might have bonuses that in your opinion is worse than what you had on before), or even limits the choice of your style (yes, that's a criteria :D). It just puts limitations on what you can use, and I hate being forced period (you'll find that I'll be mentioning that a lot). The only other option I would say to have a way to alter the stats and bonuses, and even the looks to make it how you want it. You could do this by say combining armor (this could even go into weapons), and taking certain parts of them, and with a cost (high amount of ascendant materials?), and combine them into one. So if you find a gun with certain bonuses that you like, but have another that has the element you want on it, or rather a armor with certain stats, but the light level you need, all you have to do is do this process, and you can shape your character into something truly unique. Alright, that's it. Discuss. Oh wait, before I forget, I'm going to post a poll just in case this actually turns into a big thing, and I can get a quick consensus of the community's thoughts. Peace, Godin EDIT: This first one has gone decently. It seems that some people didn't get my point (the few who decided to quickly scan through, find what they think to be wrong (PVP thing), and try to refute it, then fail). Otherwise, It seems that Many people came along with a multitude of great ideas, most of which could be used at the same time: First off, the modification idea. We'd go to the Armorer/Gun-Armorsmith/Blacksmith (can't decide on a name), pay X currency, and you could take apart a weapon or armor to get parts. These parts would be the bonuses (Like say the Invective Bonus), stats (Int., Str., Dis.) handling (ROF, Impact, etc.) and Power and Defense, and be able to apply it to other guns or armor. For this, I'd say that to put it back together, we would possibly need a material, currency, or both to do it. Lastly, I would say that Raid anything, and exotic anything should never be able to go thorough this. They should stay as unique items (which reminds me, raid weapons needs their own tier. They are stronger than regular legendaries, but not as unique as Exotics). Styles Could however be solved in a much simpler way: as hagintora explained it to me, in DCUO, if you got a piece of gear, it would automatically save as a skin in your inventory. This would essentially get rid of the uniqueness of each character (barring the facial customization, in which they just need to do a batter job at imo). That just needs to happen.

  • If you could modify a weapon with an ability you get from breaking down a weapon that had it, that would TOTALLY rock. Imagine a heavy machine gun like zombie apocalypse with the 'String of Curses' perk from Bad Juju?

    • Very good thoughts. I am inclined to agree to a certain point. I would like to adjust a stat of raid gear (only int. dis. or str.). Just swap one for another of your choosing, but never two of the same.

      • The whole idea of the light system is perfect. Where they went wrong; Tooo Few* items in order to be that higher rank. They need to add at least 2-3 different sets of armor for each class. Variety is fine, but there is zero fun in a game when all you are doing is trying to get gear you can only attain just once a week.

        • More customization is imperative and would breathe much life into the Destiny experience. I agree that Light levels are a notional concept at best, and a drag-parachute on enjoying the game at worst. I'd be completely fine with scrapping them in favor of a more traditional level progression, and making the lagniappe for Raid completion interesting based on its perks rather than its level gain.

          • We definitely need more customization. I had a full set of dustwalker armor from the vanguard. But the leg armor did me absolutely no good...had more ammo for auto rifle...which I don't use normally. I went and bought dead orbit leg armor which gave me more ammo for my HC. It would be awesome to be able to customize your armour with certain stats...such as what kind of ammo bonus. Each upgrade could cost like 10k glimmer or some ascendant material maybe

I may be wrong, but I suspect the light levels are just a short-term fudge to help extend the game's limited content. When the story continues proper in the DLC, I wouldn't be surprised to see the light levels removed to allow players to start levelling up beyond 20

                • I agree my friend Reece (Starki11er8982- on Xbox live) has been always at least two or three levels higher then me except for the weekend he did't get to play and I caught up. So now everytime someone else joins he says he so much better than me because he's TWO LEVELS HIGHER!!!! I've beaten him at every FPS once I learned the controls and got the hang of the game halo, cod, ect. But apparently light levels (even one above) MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. So they should be removed because it makes people think they are a lot better than they are. Oh and by the way feel free to troll him!! :P

                • While I respect your opinion,I disagree light levels similar to gear levels is something very common in mmos when it comes to end game, and light levels are even noob friendly and simplified.Nevertheless you brought some serious issues like random stats and appearance.Since we are console gamers I shall give an example of a game that most of us have played. In diablo 3 you can transomgrify your equipped gear in order to look like another one that you have already obtaines and best part is that you dony have to keep that other piece of gear,it is registered to your wardrobe lets say once you obtain it.And now to stats, altough disc int and strength arent significant enough to make and break the game(to be expected since its an fps) it would a cool idea to be able to reforge one of the stats for the right price so as to control the path your character is heading. And this why I believe there is no need to simply get rid of the light levels since there are ways to adress your problems without altering the mechanics of end game progression

                  • I have another idea to add on, or fix the problem. Same idea as WoW Transmog. If you like the appearance of item A (and have item A), but prefer or need the light level/stats of item B (which you have as well), then have a way to make item B look like item A. This would not require a change to the leveling system, and it would not require new items be designed for the sole purpose of customization. As newer, better, and different looking gear gets released over time you can change the appearance as you see fit as long as you have the item that you want appearance and stat wise.

                    • i think the reason why they did light levels was to slow us on purpose... they need time to create the DLC and so with the light levels it not only slows us from caping at 30 but also gives them exstra time to tweek what they need for the DLC.

                      • Your point about wanting to rid light levels because of wanting different stats in pvp is invalid... Levels don't mean anything in pvp so it doesn't matter how much light you have.

                        • Hate the fact you got to wear certain gear for light levels! At the end we will all look the same lol! Like you say i am also a player that looks for cosmetic aspect but find myself having to keep higher gear in inventory so i can progress. The light level should come with experience point similar to mote of lights that you can apply on your armour of choice. Example: two points per level gained that you can apply to any armour you want and it would raise all stats on that armour for every point put to a max equivalent to raid gear so you can get to level 30 also. Don't think it would be hard to implement just add lite at every mote you get with the system already in place. At the same time it would not penalize player that all ready have light in armour already. If you go get the raid armour or chose to get amour with light it would get upgraded faster to the max compared to starting armour with zero light so for the people ho don't care about style the game would be the same and for those ho do its a amazing story to tell your friends how you grinded hard to get those cool boots to level 25 light. In my opinion it would also cater to the customization promise they said and did not deliver on.
Looking cool is no easy
• You see Destiny never intended for people to want to rush up the level scale, that's why levels matter so little in PvP, so that if you only play PVP and don't get above 25 you can still kick ass. So PvP player shouldn't even care about level since there is no trophy or actual benefit to leveling up.

                          • Your level doesn't matter in crucible so if you only play PVP where whatever you want that has the skills you are looking for. The only time light matters in PVP is for Iron Banner. So save your ugly Higher light gear for when Iron Banner rolls around.

If they did keep the light level and they will... allow a vendor to sell bounties for light points. Here's an off the wall thought here, what if you were able to enchant a weapon with light or void or fire etc. Hahaha honestly, my main problem has been an inability play the game long enough really get anything valuable---Squirrl.

                                  • I like the idea of combining weapons. I would like to add on to that. Maybe a way to create your own weapon, you can use any perk you've previously mastered on a different weapon. I just don't have an idea for specifics on how to do this. As for PvP armor, I don't really get your point. I don't play a lot of PvP. I was under the impression that all stats for armor and weapons where equal regardless of level. I could be wrong though. I believe bonuses from class, weapons, and armor still apply, but that's it. If you are just referring to style; I think it should be like DCUO. If you equip a piece you get that style and are able to change it in your character menu. If you are talking bonuses such as strength, intelligence, ect; each PvP vender sells a different combination of these, pick the one that best suits your play style. Example: 1 vender sells strength and discipline, 1 sells intelligence and strength, 1 sells discipline and intelligence. I don't know which is which.

                                      • I think they should have more than just light levels. Add some more options instead of light. Maybe like an option to choose "the darkness" and gain dark armor, requiring different material to upgrade or something, you know? And depending on which side you choose you get specific advantages/disadvantages. Maybe even have a different set of missions for "dark players". This doesn't have to stop at that though, it could expand to greater ideas! More characters with unique abilities, special weapons made for each character, and much more! There could be like a whole new event every couple months that involves with picking a side/team, light or dark or whatever else, and you join other players on the same side to defeat players on the opposing side. Not like crucible though, more like starting out with your squad and expanding your army with more players and eventually conquering the universe! So I guess another tournament type deal, but it's more about winning battles which can be kill the other team or first team to beat a strike or something. I'm honestly just rambling on here so please reply and leave comments and more ideas! Maybe Bungie will notice our ideas if they haven't already gone over these themselves.
