Thoughts on Warlocks and why almost nobody plays them in PvP

I wanted to share some experiences about the Warlock. I think there is a few things that could be improved (not necesserily buffed in damage or ability, but rather augmented), to make the warlock class more viable in pvp. About me: I am a Warlock main since the first month of D1. The Warlock is my most played chracter of all games ever played! 🤪 1.) Animations: The Warlocks Animations take way too long! Some examples are the NovaBomb-Throw, Sky Dive on Dawnblade and especially the rift! Those Animations need to be speed up! Especially after the go fast update, this feels even more like a handicap! A controversial one would be [b]blink[/b]! The Problem with blink IMO is, you basically give up your vertical space-playstyle for a more ground based-playstyle and you are kinda still at an disadvantage. People see your-blinktrail and can shoot it. I can't tell how many times on my screen I blinked around the corner and the guy still killed me by shooting my initial spot. I don't really know how to balance thisone though without making it OP, [i]so I'd like to hear your suggestions![/i] 2.) Axion bolts: I don't see why they are not faster or do instantaneus damage line the other bolt-grenades. They are so slow, everyone can avoid them or hunters can even dodge them completely ... Speed up their projectiles speed! They are not too strong and their damage is not higher than arcbolt, which can chain at instant speed over rather large distances. 3.) Evades during Supers: This is a more controversial one but IMO Evades such as Ionic blink or Icarus Dash should not eat up your super gauge! The super usage is already pretty draining on Stormcaller and Dawnblade and using those evades feels kinda punishing to me. Maybe make them use less (about half) of what they use now?! Just food for thought. [b]TLDR[/b] Speed up the Warlocks generell Animation speed to make them feel more fluid in their gameplay and bring them back to PvP! Also speed up axion bolt seekers!!!! I think that would be a first step to make Warlocks feel more viable again! Please comment what you think about this. Have a good one! Zero

  • I think that warlocks and titans are used pretty much the same in PvP with all their subclasses being represented. There seems to be more hunters than them both but I’m not sure this is because they are far more powerful. The hunter jump and movement seems to be a big selling point for players who don’t pay attention to the ‘meta’ and for this reason I think they will always be the most used. I don’t have vast experience players warlocks but they seem to have a lot of strong abilities at their disposal with the skill coming from when to use/proc these abilities and when not to. With all the new subclasses and changes to current ones happening in Forsaken, it will be interesting to see if there is much change in what classes are used.

  • Rift should have a faster animation, no doubt. For blink, you should be able to pull your weapons faster out of it, the radar thing is enough of a con. For axion bolts, I think the entire point of it should be making your enemies run away from it. I think they should get faster the further they are from their target and maybe apply a very short suppressing effect on impact.

      • I man a warlock and hate PVP. Its just pure death on a stick. Nothing feels fast and even my nova bombs are getting shot in midair now, so they are useless. My strat on warlock is distance shooting and support. Just stay back and kill from a distance. Rushing is instant death even with 10 mobility and a shotgun.

        • Warlocks and titans both need buffs desperately. Meanwhile hunters are becoming more and more overused and overpowered.

          • I just gotta say, I main top-tree Stormcaller, which “instantly” fully regenerates your health when you activate your super with a full grenade and melee bar, and I gotta say, it’s flawed. When I’m being attacked and decide to pop my super (with my nade and melee), my health appears to regenerate, but I die immediately anyway (thus wasting my super). This needs to be fixed. It’s very, very infuriating. Not to mention, stormcaller damage in general (especially against other supers), needs a buff too.

            • Um.. I main a Warlock and have since D1 I do pretty good in PvP. Now I agree the grenades are horrible and the Supers have a bit of a learning curve Vs say Titan Smash. That and most of the Warlock exotic armour is pretty lack luster save a few selections and those are more PvE.

            • All grenades are terrible in this game, but axion bolt is overwhelmingly weak. They need to bring back the D1 axion bolt.

              • I'm a warlock main as well I completely agree with you with almost everything and you need to talk about the stormcaller more cuz to me the super to me takes to long to kill someone in pvp in my opinion. Also u forgot about when u hit someone in the air with dawnblade it doesn't kill them they said they it I think but they didn't

                • I don't main any subclass, at least I feel but I do play Warlocks a lot less because even when I boost Warlock mobility I feel like my animations, definitely still hinder me.

                  • Just an FYI, in my crucible kill track emblem (an many people I know) hunters have 50% warlocks have 30% and titans have 20%, because they have the worst neutral game (because it’s based on melees which they are a no-no in PVP). Not saying warlocks don’t need a buff, I’m saying they aren’t the least played lol.

                      I'm a Warlock main as well: - Melee range should increase as per what the animation suggests. - Speed up Rift start-up or recovery, that's the real issue of slow action. - Agreed on Axiom Bolt seekers, as well as damage increase. But they don't need to shoot a straight line like other bolt type grenades. - Super animation speed is fine as is. - Buff or rework Dawnblade. Aiming is wonky and it's rediculous that a super has bullet drop. - If I'm spending super meter to boost grenades, I want boosted grenades - not 'flashier' grenades. Void grenade should last longer, Axiom should spaen more bolts, scatter should track, etc. - Nova Bomb variant with the lingering void damage should have huge reduction in explosive damage in return for longer (longest) lasting area denial void burn. Otherwise it kills everything anyway on explosion and doesn't last long enough to do proper area denial. I'd happily trade initial damage for a true zoning super. - Buff Arc super movement speed. - If a perk says I can shoot and toss grenades in the air without breaking glide, but I still have the universal aerial accuracy debuff applied, what are you asking of me exactly? Remove the accuracy penalty if I'm using that Attunement, otherwise it's counter intuitive. - All Rifts should grant their buffs for 8secs teammates can take with them. The concept of standing in one place to maintain the buffs simply isn't ideal in a game with this much movement options in PvP, or major boss battles that demand we absolutely don't stay stationary in PvE.

                      • Warlocks most definitely need some attention to be on par in PvP. Rift needs its animation time cut big time, same for titan shield as well. Also thr chaos void grenades should have the super consumption completely removed. Once you start your grenade there is no going back, players should be rewarded for trying to time these charged up grenades in battle, not punished, it a perk within that skill loadout.

                      • Those are some good ideas! Warlocks definitely need some love. To be honest, I’d rather make titans and warlocks op than hunters so that people don’t complain as much.

                        I have completely ditched blink voidlock in comp. The art of blink is to have a rough idea where your opponent is. Otherwise your potentially blinking into another player and with slow draw speed it screws u every time, it also really telegraphs your position to enemy team. Unusable in no radar situations.

                          Almost nobody uses a warlock in pvp? When I was playing pvp when it was 4v4, there seemed to be at least 2 warlocks in every match. I always see people going on about hunters yet hunter was the least played class from my experience. I'm on PC so maybe it's very different from the PS4/console.

                          • I think Attunement of Sky's super needs buff. Icarus dash should not use super energy IMO. It doesn't have regen, tracking, or Aoe damage.

                            • For me it's mainly the glide for the warlock in PvP. It's just not viable to jump and glide during combat, if you do, you are pretty much dead at that point since you're a slow moving target and in air accuracy is abysmal. But when it comes to titans and hunters, it's viable to take advantage of jumping to win a fight as it's easy to control, build momentum and cancel. Whereas warlocks are at a plain disadvantage when gliding. Also Stormcaller needs to be made more viable in PvP. Its rarely used and that says alot about it, even as a warlock main, as soon as I see someone using stormtrance I run towards it and shoot and get the kill most of the time. I know this is an an unpopular opinion but most people are hunters and a hunter would not want a warlock buff. For all hunters care is for it to remain arc strider meta spam. We might aswell rename the crucible to "Hunter mode"

                              • Warlocks are used more then Titans, it is hard to tell since Hunters make up 80% of my matches

                              • Seen more than enough Dawnblades and Voidwalkers. Stormcaller is straight trash though. Used it tonight for novelty and the TTK for it's super is awful.
