I'm just getting into the lore. Is it worth collecting the 50 calcified fragments for myself?

Not really. Unless you just want to have all the fragments in your grimoire collection, I wouldn't. Those Fragments reveal the history of the hive and Oryx's rise to power (known as the book of sorrows) and if you're looking to read that, I'd click that Ishtar collective link and look up "The book of sorrows".
