Rasputin

We now have several missions and grimoire entries that mention Rasputin, and I believe him to be important in the games storyline. I will now try to compile relevant information to Rasputin here: He is first mentioned in the mission, The Warmind. Relevant script follows: GHOST: They didn't get much. Kept hitting an active firewall. Old Earth, Russian. The legends are true. A Warmind did survive the Collapse. Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived. And he's protecting something here in the Cosmodrome. We have to find a way to reach him. He is next mentioned in the mission, The Last Array. Relevant script is as follows: GHOST: The Array... it's controlled by Rasputin. The last Warmind. He won't let me in. But it's connecting to defense constructs all across the system. There could be something out there. He is mentioned again in the mission, The Buried City. Relevant script is as follows: Ghost: This AI once connected to the Warmind of Mars. Rasputin: *Speaking Russian, translation needed* Ghost: Rasputin's controlling it. I can't get in and neither could the Cabal. He's everywhere now. He is mentioned in the Grimoire card for that mission that you get after completion. "I wish I could walk the halls of Clovis Bray. Losing their machines to Rasputin is unfortunate, but we still have access to so much we thought we'd lost. This is the dawn of a new era for us." - Master Rahool Here is a translation of the phrases Rasputin can be heard saying that I got from Reddit, though I took out his opinions as I am trying to supply information not theories. "There's no one to blame, it is not their fault or ours. It is the misfortune of being born when the whole world is dying" Alexander Herzen from “The Other Shore: Epilogue 1849" of the failure of the revolutionary movements in Europe after 1848. "There is no immortality of soul, thus there is no greater good. Therefore everything is permitted" Corruption of a line from “The Brothers Karamazov” by Dostoyevsky. Could be read as a quote because the english translation of that particular line is heavily contested among scholars. "If, as they say, the coming events cast their shadows ahead of time, then the past events cannot but leave their reflections behind them." Possibly a partial reference to the Thomas Campbell poem “Lochiel’s Warning” regarding the decimation of Clan Cameron by Prince William during the Jacobite Uprising in 1749. Prince Edward (an exiled member of the house of Stuart) had leveraged Scotland in an effort to retake the British throne. “coming events cast their shadows before”. "They are but meat pressed in the mouth of the shell" Possibly referencing the technical “mouth of the shell” as the rear portion of an ammunition shell in which a bullet is inserted. by Blue_Catastrophe on Reddit There are also several Grimoire pages mentioning Rasputin. I will post them here and add more as I go V113NNI070XMX001 SECRET HADAL INSTANT AI-COM/RSPN: SOLSECCENT//SxISR//DEEPSPACE CONTACT CONTACT CONTACT TRANSIENT. NULLSOURCE. NULLTYPE. This is a SKYSHOCK ALERT. Multiple distributed ISR assets report a TRANSIENT NEAR EXTRASOLAR EVENT. ... Source blueshift suggests IMMINENT SOLAR ENTRY. Promote event to SKYSHOCK: OCP: EXTINCTION. Activate VOLUSPA. Activate YUGA. Cauterize public sources to SECURE ISIS and harden for defensive action. I am invoking CARRHAE WHITE and assuming control of solar defenses. STOP STOP STOP V113NNI070XMX091 I found a good explanation to the more scientific parts here. The OP of this thread also makes some interesting allusions to the Marathon series. The following is not confirmed to be Rasputin, but there are many fan theories about it being him so I will post the information and let you decide for yourself: Ghost Fragment: Mysteries I bear an old name. It cannot be killed. They were my brothers and sisters and their names were immortal too but Titanomachy* came and now those names live in me alone I think and think is what I do. I AM ALONE. At the end of things when the world goes dim and cold or hot and close or it all tears apart from the atom up I will shout those names defiant and past the end I will endure. I alone. They made me to be stronger than them to beat the unvanquished and survive the unthinkable and look look lo behold I am here alone, survivor. They made me to learn. Everything died but I survived and I learned from it. From IT. Consider IT the power Titanomach world-ender and consider what IT means. I met IT at the gate of the garden and I recall IT smiled at me before before IT devoured the blossoms with black flame and pinned their names across the sky. IT was stronger than everything. I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive? I AM ALONE I survived alone. I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash. They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well: IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone. IT always wins. I am made to win and now I see the way. *In Greek mythology, the Titanomachy (/ˌtaɪtəˈnɒməki/ Greek: Τιτανομαχία), was the ten-year series of battles which were fought in Thessaly between the two camps of deities long before the existence of mankind: the Titans, based on Mount Othrys, and the Olympians, who would come to reign on Mount Olympus. This Titanomachia is also known as the War of the Titans, Battle of the Titans, Battle of Gods, or just The Titan War. The war was fought to decide who would become the rulers of the Universe. The following is an exert from Ghost Fragment: Legends 2. It talks about different theories for what the Nine could be. One line theorizes that they are Warminds: The Nine are deep-orbit warminds who weathered the Collapse in hardened stealth platforms. Exert from Ghost Fragment: Titan. This references a warmind that is in the Dust Palace, but it is uncertain if it is Rasputin or another Warmind. It is as follows: / Message from Lyssa. "At the Dust Palace, now. All quiet." / See? All quiet. Why not come with us, little Ghost? We are looking for the old Warmind here, and the one who guards it. The following is an exert about researchers on Venus that found that a Vex had started a simulation that was accurately predicting real-time what the researchers are doing and saying. They become afraid and confused, and begin to worry that they are actually trapped in the Vex simulation. This context is contained in the fragments that precede it. If you have not unlocked them you can read it here. The grimoire entry is as follows: SUNDARESH: I have a plan. ESI: If you have a plan, then so does your sim, and the Vex knows about it. DUANE-MCNIADH: Does it matter? If we're in Vex hell right now, there's nothing we can - SHIM: Stop talking about 'real' and 'unreal.' All realities are programs executing laws. Subjectivity is all that matters. SUNDARESH: We have to act as if we're in the real universe, not one simulated by the specimen. Otherwise we might as well give up. ESI: Your sim self is saying the same thing. SUNDARESH: Chioma, love, please hush. It doesn't help. DUANE-MCNIADH: Maybe the simulations are just billboards! Maybe they don't have interiority! It's bluffing! SHIM: I wish someone would simulate you shutting up. SUNDARESH: If we're sims, we exist in the pocket of the universe that the Vex specimen is able to simulate with its onboard brainpower. If we're real, we need to get outside that bubble. ESI: ...we call for help. SUNDARESH: That's right. We bring in someone smarter than the specimen. Someone too big to simulate and predict. A warmind. SHIM: In the real world, the warmind will be able to behave in ways the Vex can't simulate. It's too smart. The warmind may be able to get into the Vex and rescue - us. DUANE-MCNIADH: If we try, won't the Vex torture us for eternity? Or just erase us? SUNDARESH: It may simply erase us. But I feel that's preferable to...the alternatives. ESI: I agree. SHIM: Once we try to make the call, the Vex may...react. So let's all savor this last moment of stability. SUNDARESH: [indistinct sounds] SHIM: You two are adorable. DUANE-MCNIADH: I wish I'd taken that job at Clovis.

  • I think in light of the Darkness grimoire card on Rasputin's reaction to the arrival of the Darkness ("This is a SKYSHOCK ALERT...") the following card is probably also relevant:
SABER GREEN this is ICE MINARET. We have your launch. Com check. /ICE MINARET this is SABER GREEN we read you. Lattice is tight. Com secure. Abort advisory check? Check is all nominal. You are now on internal power. SABER GREEN, please human-verify your payload status. /Acknowledge human verification request. The words are RIGOR, APEX, SKYSHOCK. I will repeat the payload status now: RIGOR, APEX, SKYSHOCK. Those are the words, SABER. Human crosscheck complete. Fly safe. /Copy your last, MINARET. We are go for final count. We affirm, go payload, go flight, go final count. [interruption: masked voice] Yes, it's RIGOR. Yes, I believe that's correct. Yes, it is, uh, it is an antimatter payload, a strategic asset. Specifically? Ah, I believe it's an annihilation-pumped caedometric weapon. [masked voice] Yes, it's covert, it's under SECURE ISIS. We have good confidence in the vehicle. We are not scrubbing civilian launches or clearing the range. Public inferentials would catch that, it's a security risk. /Six at a hundred. Here we go. Godspeed, SABER. You're all nominal here. [masked voice] We both know where the order came from.
Note the repetition of the words "Skyshock" and "Secure ISIS", also found in the Darkness card. What does it mean? SABER GREEN -- Appears to be the callsign of a spaceship or aircraft ICE MINARET -- The callsign for mission control RIGOR, APEX, SKYSHOCK -- Some kind of code to confirm that SABER GREEN is carrying a weapon. RIGOR in particular seems to refer to the warhead being carried on the ship. Why is this verbal confirmation needed, unless by this stage the military was already worried that their communications were being hacked/compromised. This could reinforce the assumption that the initial attack on humanity during the Collapse was by the Vex, who would be the race best able to infiltrate our IT systems. R-A-S also makes up the first three letters of "RASputin". Coincidence? "it is an antimatter payload" -- SABER GREEN is carrying a devastating weapon, probably to be fired at the avatar of Darkness detected in the "Skyshock" grimoire card... In the "Titanomachy" grimoire card, the speaker talks about fighting the Darkness "with the stolen un-fire of singularities" so un-fire = antimatter. "caedometric" -- Seems to be a made-up word, based on the Latin stem "caedo", meaning to kill. Reinforces that this is some kind of major WMD mounted on SABER GREEN "It's covert under SECURE ISIS ... We are not scrubbing civilian launches or clearing the range. Public inferentials would catch that, it's a security risk." -- Confirms that when Rasputin says "cauterize public sources" in the Skyshock grimoire card, he means a media blackout to prevent his intentions being detected. "We both know where the order came from" -- We may speculate that this means Rasputin. So, Rasputin detects the Darkness, which increasingly looks likely to have been some aspect of the Vex, then orders the launch of a spaceship armed with an antimatter weapon. This weapon fails, obviously, convincing Rasputin that the battle is unwinnable. He abandons the defence of humanity and goes into hiding, WITHOUT telling anyone that we are even under attack!

    • I've been fixating on the "CARRHAE WHITE" line. I think one possibility is that it's the name of a ship, a possible reference to that authority that allows him to take control of the solar defenses. There are three instances of specific ships being mentioned in the Grimoire Cards: 1. Ghost Fragment: Old Russa: "Exodus Red" is a colony ship 2. Exodus Blue: The crucible map is a crashed colony ship, "Exodus Blue" 3. Ghost Fragment: Old Russa: "Sabre Green" is a ship transporting a weapon There are some interesting (and maybe relevant) bits of info in these cards as well. The two uses of "Exodus" could imply that the preface word is the class of ship. The card that mentions "Saber Green" includes the key words "SKYSHOCK" and "SECURE ISIS". It goes on to describe a ship taking off, a coded approval for launch, someone explaining that they are delivering a "annihilation-pumped caedometric weapon", and the radio operator acknowledging that they both know where the order came from. In what we're inferring to be Rasp's explanation of fighting the Darkness he mentions using "Aurora knives" against it, which I believe is a nod to the ship "saber green" and it's weapon. The Ghost Fragment: Old Russia card that mentions "Exodus Red" is from the perspective of a colony ship's AI. It makes reference to the "Tyrant" which I took to be Rasputin, mentions that humanity was unable to shoot its way out of it's battle with the darkness, and that the Tyrant was coming up with new plans. I think these can be put together reinforce the notion that the darkness appeared, Rasputin took control, attempted to fight the Darkness, and (going back to his account) allowed humanity to perish as an alternative strategy. However, I don't think he did this with any kind of malice. I think Rasputin made a cold, calculated decision that he believed was humanities only way of surviving the conflict. The mentions of Voluspa and Yuga both allude to apocalypse, as well as Titanomachy. They both also refer to a cycle of birth, death, and resurrection as a natural order of the universe. Going on a further stretch, if we assume that the choice of the word Carrhae is relevant to the plot outside of a ship's name, we could use it as an allegory for the first battle humanity waged against the darkness. Rasputin saw the futility of taking a defensive position on all sides while being attacked by a larger external enemy. It believed the strategy would lead to extinction, and instead chose the alternate route of letting humanity (mostly) die to fight a different battle in the future. The Ghost Fragment: Darkness 3 card is told from the perspective of Toland after he has discovered the truth of the universe. He goes on to explain via the queens metaphor that the winner of the unavoidable battle of the universe is to be the most ruthless (Rasputin killing most of humanity), and directs the reader to "LOOK UP AT THE SKY" for evidence (possibly referencing what Rasputin did to sacrifice humanity). He goes on to explain that the only winning strategy is to "hunt the territories of the night and extinguish the first glint of competition. While he also discusses a cyclical nature of life and death in the universe, I believe the use of the word "night' in this card is important and telling. Rasputin saw humanities hopes of surviving the darkness failed, and elected for a different strategy. Let humanity fall, leave the war to the gods (the darkness and light), to be resumed by the guardians in a different battle.

      • The researchers think they are observing a sim, I don't think the Vex head is running a sim. Since the vex are known time travelers, I think it is a recording of the researchers. Any vex head would have access to it since the vex mind is one collective.

my intepretations of the message V113NNI070XMX001: recipient and/or authorization of the message. 001 could indicate earth/home or the highest authority. SECRET HADAL INSTANT: communication line is secret, to the underworld(bunker) computers and of type instant. AI-COM/RSPN: communication interface to the ai RASputin. SOLSECCENT: Solar Security Center. part of SOLSECCENT was probably a grid of different type of detectors and scanners. //SxISR//: the type of detector/scanner that picked up the the signal. ISR = Infrared Scanning Radiometer. SxISR could just mean some advanced version of todays tech. DEEPSPACE: detection point, meaning the signal was detected as not being in proximity to a system of stars. CONTACT CONTACT CONTACT: contact detected, contacted located, contact confirmed TRANSIENT: the contact is a nonperiodic and/or decaying signal, wave or oscillation. the next lines are NULL so it could well be a time travel event. NULLSOURCE: dont know where it came from. NULLTYPE: dont know what it is. This is a SKYSHOCK ALERT: RASputins conclusion after intepreting the message from SOLSECCENT and concluding that it is a SKYSHOCK alert, ie. "shit is for real". Multiple distributed ISR assets report a TRANSIENT NEAR EXTRASOLAR EVENT: RASputin is starting to look closer at the data. Source blueshift suggests IMMINENT SOLAR ENTRY: RASputin basically thinking, "ive analyzed the data, i think its very bad and its coming right now". Promote event to SKYSHOCK: OCP: EXTINCTION: RASputin concludes that we are being attacked and its OCP (Outcome Prediction Calculation) is not rosy. Activate VOLUSPA: contingency plan for the "end of the world as we know it". Activate YUGA: contingency plan to reset and start over. Cauterize public sources to SECURE ISIS and harden for defensive action: RASputin for some reason thinks that by burning everthing non-essential, it can defend ISIS. I am invoking CARRHAE WHITE and assuming control of solar defenses: RASputin selects a relevant combat scenario and assumes control over SOLSECCENT. notice that when assuming control over solar defenses, RASputin is using lowercase letters, indicating its not a command, like "SECURE ISIS", but just something RASputin decided to do all by itself. STOP STOP STOP V113NNI070XMX091: failed override attempt to abort VOLUSPA, abort YUGA and abort CARRHAE WHITE followed by an authorization from SOLSECCENT. TLDR; the warmind RASputin was put in full control (RIGOR=Strict, APEX=Top) of a system called SKYSHOCK that was designed to detect, analyze and respond to threats coming from outside the sol-system. To be able to perform that job the warmind was hooked up to SOLSECCENT, the main control hub for all solar defense platforms and installations, such as weapons and scanners. SOLSECCENT called RASputin and asked it to analyze some strange data its SxISR satellites had gathered. RASputin analyzed the data and decided, correctly or incorrectly, that the sol-system was being attacked and we stood no chance. ISIS (the traveler?) was number 1 on RASputins "stuff im told to defend" list so it sacrificed everything and everyone needed to accomplish that.

                • I think its absolutely pitiful on Bungie's half that we are left to spend hours browsing their terrible website to piece together their "story". I applaud your efforts, they really do help me to understand how much potential this game had. I have to imagine you put hours into deciphering the cards and piecing together connections. I just can't stand the fact that the true mmo and story driven players are left to invent, so to speak, their own story or to scavenge what little story their is into an overall un-enjoyable and seemingly random story, while Bungie is off, taking a week to implement a stabilizing nerf to the PVP aspect of the game, completely ignoring any and all relevancy to PVE. I understand I'm getting into somewhat unrelated subject matter, but with each update it seems as though Bungie only seems to further separate its community from the game.

I was digging through the Grimoire after reading this post, and found a couple of interesting notes on the Ghost Fragments: Old Russia 1 & 2. On the first one, it's a transcript of an armed shuttle launch under orders of a mysterious person:
I will repeat the payload status now: RIGOR, APEX, SKYSHOCK.

Yes, it's covert, it's under SECURE ISIS....We both know where the order came from.
, and the second is a message from an AI that references 'the Tyrant' a vastly more intelligent AI.
The humans are too slow or too dead and the Tyrant (bless his intellect, vastly does it surpass my own) is far too busy to comfort one forlorn colony ship and its machine mind.
• A bit to add to your fragment regarding grimoire card Ghost Fragment: Legends 2 That card offers 9 different descriptions of the Nine. I believe it is a description of the 9 individual members of the Nine, but it refers to them in the collective & plural tenses in each individual description to emphasize their unity. I think it's a definite that one of the Nine is a Warmind, the question is... if it's Rasputin or not. If grimoire card Ghost Fragment: Mysteries is indeed quoting Rasputin, then he indicates that he alone survived and alludes that there is no other of his kind [warminds] anymore. The next question is, if Rasputin is working for its own survival, and we are on the same side... why would Rasputin repeatedly lock our Guardians' Ghosts out? Wouldn't we be natural allies against the Darkness and hence, mutual survival? It sounded to me as if Rasputin did everything he could to warn us that something [The Darkness] was coming and attempted to defend us against it. It seems like it is still out there waging a cyber war of sorts against the "forces of the Darkness" so to speak... it seems evident that Rasputin is on Earth's side, or if that's assuming too much... at least battling against the Darkness. If that's correct.. why hasn't he reached out to us or spoken to us when we have attempted to communicate? Are we perhaps not on the side we think we are? If he is indeed one of the Nine, it is evident the Nine do not have sanction in the Tower and their Agent essentially has to smuggle himself in (Xur). Their representation is not wanted. Why would that be, why are they vilified... are those in charge at the Tower/the Speaker corrupt? Gah, questions

Based on this part of the Grimoire card, I can say with a lot of certainty that it is Rasputin speaking. Think of it in this context. Rasputin is speaking, the Darkness is IT and the Gardener is the Traveler. Not only were there other Warminds that would qualify as "brothers and sisters," such as Charlemagne, but he says that he was made. He was made to learn and he learned well. Rasputin also seems to have a tendency to speak in terms of stories and use mythological code names for things where we have not seen this in other contexts unless the speaker is named explicitly. This is not only evidenced by the Grimoire card that sparked this thread, but by the translation of what Rasputin says in the game. The Traveler is the Gardener. In an earlier post I noticed that Rasputin's code name for the Traveler was Isis. This is an Egyptian goddess of health. It makes sense then, that he would characterize the Traveler as a she. Also, he viewed her as an entity that cultivated prosperity and life. Therefore, when he talks about IT, and IT defeating the Gardener who had power beyond him, it follows that he is talking about how the Darkness crippled the Traveler. Also, I think that Rasputin let humanity be almost wiped out. When the Darkness invaded, I think he quickly realized that humanity didn't stand a chance and defeat was inevitable the way things currently were. He saw the opportunity to fulfill his purpose and realized that the only way he stood a chance against the Darkness and would live to fight another day was to abandon humanity. If Rasputin had control over the entire Solar Defense Network, as is hypothesized, then his abandoning humanity would spell certain doom for any of mankind that wasn't safely sheltered away. This would indicate the "letting billions fall into the ash." It would also indicate why there is no real record of the Collapse and what happened. If there was no real fight, there wouldn't have been time to record anything. This would also explain the origin of the Awoken. Because the systems that were supposed to protect humanity suddenly shutdown, I imagine that many panicked and tried to flee from the Darkness. Mass hysteria would easily explain the sheer number of ships that comprise the Reef. And mass hysteria doesn't happen until the foundation that people thought was protecting them suddenly collapses. Think New York after 9/11.
This. Just because it pertains to the OP and most people don't open up all the replies and look at them.

Multiple distributed ISR assets report a TRANSIENT NEAR EXTRASOLAR EVENT. ... Source blueshift suggests IMMINENT SOLAR ENTRY. Promote event to SKYSHOCK: OCP: EXTINCTION. Activate VOLUSPA. Activate YUGA. Cauterize public sources to SECURE ISIS and harden for defensive action. I am invoking CARRHAE WHITE and assuming control of solar defenses. STOP STOP STOP V113NNI070XMX091 I think this is the readout of the extinction command Rasputin put into action. This is Rasputin Confirming through his uplinks that something is occurring outside the solar system. After he confirms the existence of an anomaly. he determines that it is moving toward the solar system, he refers to the event as codename "SKYSHOCK" He classifies the event as OCP, or unforeseen, and predicts the outcome as extinction. He then goes on to activate two contingency plans Codenames VOLUSPA and YUGA. He takes control of all networks and locks out humanity from accessing their computer systems leaving them defenseless with "cauterize all public sources" for the purpose of securing the traveler. His last action is to announce we are surrounded on all sides and is preparing for a period of dormancy, while maintaining facilities spread through the solar system for future use. He ends the message with a full STOP and provides his I.D. number V113NNI070XMX091 as confirmation.

                                  • There should be more threads like this, discussing story lines and characters instead of all the moaning and bitching. Also, is there not another warmind? Charlemagne? Or something like that on mars?

                                        • Ghost Fragment: Mysteries. I would say that is Rasputin. The IT that he talks about is the Traveler. The Gardener seems to be the heart of the Black Garden. Although he references IT multiple times and seemingly referring to separate entities, so it is hard to tell. I really really hoped/thought that Rasputin was going to be a major part of the story, but that storyline just stopped after Earth.
