The origin of life on Earth is a set of paradoxes. In order for life to have gotten started, there must have been a genetic molecule—something like DNA or RNA—capable of passing along blueprints for making proteins, the workhorse molecules of life. But modern cells can’t copy DNA and RNA without the help of proteins themselves. To make matters more vexing, none of these molecules can do their jobs without fatty lipids, which provide the membranes that cells need to hold their contents inside. And in yet another chicken-and-egg complication, protein-based enzymes (encoded by genetic molecules) are needed to synthesize lipids.
Now, researchers say they may have solved these paradoxes. Chemists report today that a pair of simple compounds, which would have been abundant on early Earth, can give rise to a network of simple reactions that produce the three major classes of biomolecules—nucleic acids, amino acids, and lipids—needed for the earliest form of life to get its start. Although the new work does not prove that this is how life started, it may eventually help explain one of the deepest mysteries in modern science.
“This is a very important paper,” says Jack Szostak, a molecular biologist and origin-of-life researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, who was not affiliated with the current research. “It proposes for the first time a scenario by which almost all of the essential building blocks for life could be assembled in one geological setting.”
The article is very worth reading.
I'm sure many of you will cry out "they don't know for sure" and blah blah blah. Yes correct. But they are getting closer and closer. But please, read the article.
Also please note the article summarizes a paper that's published in a scientific journal, and the actual paper is linked in the article. Hooray for proper sources!
One of the implications of this is that it will be just more supporting evidence for evolution. If we know for a fact that life began randomly due to proper conditions on earth then it means all life evolved from that.
Edit: title change for a better hook hopefully.

Hm? Oh, hi gang, it's me, The Aesir. Just stopped by to let you know that beyond this post is a dangerous amount of salt (as dictated by our top NaCl detectors). Salt levels that high are considered extremely dangerous and even fascist to certain freedom lovers. If you value your way of life and state of mind, please don't visit any of the posts below, as they can severely cause saltiness to you. Of course, you must be wondering how you too can prevent those same levels of salt from harming you, or even the ones you love. Well, if you happen to purchase a standard issue NaCl detector, you can get started down the path of anti salt protection! Just test it out on topics such as this and you'll get results, guaranteed! This has been a public service announcement from The Grand Ruler of the Universe in his Omnipotence, Firebrand Aesir

I've already discovered the origin of life. It was rather easy, actually. You just have to pick up a certain book and read. Can atheists actually do that... yeah know... read?

People do know science and religion can coexist right?
-
I thought this was figured out years ago with the whole lightning providing the proper reaction to combine elements that were in the air at the time to make life.

I've often wondered, whatever caused life to spring into existence, why has it only occurred once or has it occurred more than once? If it has, what happened to this second strain of life? Did it integrate into or was it absorbed by the original strain? Or, being a more primitive form of life, was it destroyed by the more developed original strain? Also, if it has occurred more than once, how often are new strains created? The answer may give us a better idea of the likelihood of finding life beyond Earth. I'm not expecting actual answers, just throwing it out there for the sake of discussion.

The real question isn't how life was created, but why?

Edited by o_____________o: 5/12/2015 7:07:43 PMI don't see how any of this disproves creationism, unless you are referring to a literal interpretation of an Aramaic god. AKA Earth created in 7 days.

Lmfao why do people care so much about destroying religion? One of you -blam!-ing jerks tell me why it bothers you so much, and why you are fighting so hard to "win" a never ending argument.
-
And we're did all that come from? You see the direction this is going

3 And The LORD ALMIGHTY stirred the waters with his power. 4 The Earth began to come together, and a dinosaur started a dash 5 to the 6 nearest taxi cab, and defied the God The Father 7 the cab smelt fresh and had dice in the mirror 8 the dinosaur was now home 9 he was the fresh prince of Bel Air Gennississ 6:3-9

Dats cool.

The math for randomly combined chemicals is almost not possible. The biggest hole I can shoot in this is that all organisms need food or other biological matter to derive caloric intake, so what would the first puddle of life eat?

Can't find SSG ACM on this thread. How disappointing...

I gave your mother some amino acids while your dad watched from the closet

Britton you keep up the good work buddy But get some really good references next time from some journals Yes yes I know wiki cites them anyway just sayin it may help any arguments
