Original Post and theory:
so after watching the reveal today the thing that stood out to me the most was the environment in the European Dead Zone where Humanity sets up its next outpost to rally and strike back at those that destroyed our home.
After looking at the footage i feel like the background contains what remains of the Traveler. I made a youtube video that covers basically how this could have happened or why and if you feel like giving that a watch that would be great. https://youtu.be/zxH5OZzt74E
If not, my theory is that when the 6 armed device attached to the traveler it began either draining it's light or was preparing it to be towed away. It's possible that when it gets towed away someone or something decided that if the Cabal where about to get away with it it would be better to not have a traveler at all rather than it fall into their hands so they destroyed the traveler in order to keep it out of cabal hands and the remains landed in the EDZ where humanity decided they might as well setup shop.
The Traveler could have just self destruct as it was being towed away or perhaps the war mind Rasputin decided to shoot it down to stop the Cabal. Either way, I'm pretty sure the structure in the back ground of the EDZ is the remains of the traveler. But i guess we'll see in 3 months! :D
More for thought, if we defeated the cabal and took back the traveler at the end of destiny 2. Wouldn't we start rebuilding under the traveler? Why would we keep an out post in the EDZ? Would bungie really go through all the trouble of making a social space like that to only use it to we where done with the story missions?
Again though this is all theory, and I know the writers said "put him in a cage" regarding the traveler. But it could be more metaphorical than literal.
EDIT: So the mystery has been solved and the object in question is indeed a piece of the traveler. However it is one that has been there since the collapse and has no bearing on the status of the Traveler while under Cabal control. Deej himself clears this one up for us: https://youtu.be/NjxUFCSmaO0?t=3m50s

Gets towed away? Do I get Aloe back? :(
-
Don't you think that if the traveler got fully destroyed there would be no more guardians to protect
-
In an interview they told us that it's just a share of the traveler broken off during the golden age (think they said the golden age, not sure) the traveler isn't going anywhere.
-
when Zavala, was fighting the Fallen in his story (in the city not on here) was that the Battle of six fronts or was that Twilight Gap? Who was that guy on the left?
-
the traveller doesnt get destroyed, ghaul has it captured and will probably try to force it to give red legion powers. thats the whole point of their attack, to punish the traveller for not choosing them, but i dont think it will get destroyed.
-
Any money will end up using the light to fix the traveler and then the camera pans out and bob the builder starts playing.
-
From the looks of it The Traveler took a massive asswhoopin For humanity!!
-
No Ghaul is definitely putting the traveler in a cage. It was said so by the writers.
-
It's a trap!
-
If bungie has plans to destroy the traveler wouldn't they show it on the trailer or at the gameplay reveal for more tension?
-
Oh noooo...the big beach ball of absolute uselessness gets DESTROYED?

Edited by Ghost593835: 5/20/2017 8:35:08 AMThats not the city. The cabal capture the traveler. They don't deatroy it, thatams the bottom half of the traveler. A huge shard

Edited by Haffoc: 5/21/2017 7:53:43 AMOk, got some new info. That is a shard from the Traveller, but it's not current, it's from the original damage to the Traveller during the collapse of the golden age. https://youtu.be/NjxUFCSmaO0?t=3m50s
In another thread, Muzzy - my fellow Ashenite (Ashen Conflux), made a post several days ago that we would find a shard of the Traveller that would allow us to regain our powers after we discussed some new dialogue added to the Speaker. Though we weren]t sure about the old classes carrying over based on what Bungie said about D1 to D2. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/226799764?sort=0&page=0
That fragment in the European Dead Zone is the bottom of our broken space ball.

If that thing was wreckage from the Traveller, then the Red Legion would be all over it. There is nobody left to oppose them at that stage. The majority of Guardians are powerless and scattered. Combat frames are useless, Rasputin doesn't care about the Traveller. Yet there isn't any sign of even one Cabal ship trying to secure the wreckage. Since Ghaul is here for the power of the Traveller then, even destroyed, he would want the wreckage secured. Neither of the following two images look like fresh impact zones. http://i.imgur.com/Fju40zzh.png http://i.imgur.com/q58s5kFh.png

Great theory. I'm curious as to how this will play out. Nice catch btw.
-
It will be utterly disappointing if the speaker and traveler are destroyed. We never got the answers we sought in Destiny 1! All these loose ends kill me.
-
Gary wants the traveler to himself. He won't destroy it. Plus the traveler is evil anyway.
-
It gets towed away, what stream did you watch?
-
"And the light was inside us all along..."
-
It's in a cage...
-
Probably a sattelite the Cabal obliterated...
-
This is not true, in the reveal they said ghaul was just putting the traveler in a cage and apparently the speaker is missing as well.
-
Did u not watch and listen to reveal by the Bungie developers, he has been taken by Gary and being transported away from the tower.
-
No, more likely the device is a funnel to channel light into some cabal as Gaul wanted the Traveler to choose them

Glad I joined dead orbit a just in the nick of time
