If that thing was wreckage from the Traveller, then the Red Legion would be all over it. There is nobody left to oppose them at that stage. The majority of Guardians are powerless and scattered. Combat frames are useless, Rasputin doesn't care about the Traveller. Yet there isn't any sign of even one Cabal ship trying to secure the wreckage.
Since Ghaul is here for the power of the Traveller then, even destroyed, he would want the wreckage secured.
Neither of the following two images look like fresh impact zones.

Good point, there's no way they could hold off the Red Legion at that point. Unless he drained it of light or the traveler refused to give him what he wanted and it no longer has value to him in the same way it did at the start. The point about impact zones not looking fresh is good. However there are possible ways that it could have come down that made it land in a way that didn't greatly disturb the surrounding areas or these shots are further away from the object than they look and are outside of the impact zone. Either way i can't wait to see what really happens :D

Yeah, it won't be too long before we get more info from the beta, and the launch isn't as far away as it seems. :)
