So there's been a lot of debate on the forums in year 2 over sniper rifles and their effectiveness in PvP.
This poll isn't to see if people think they should be nerfed per se (solutions could just as easily be buffs to counter weapons/primaries), but to just see if people believe there's a problem.
Bungie have obviously made attempts at balancing them already with ammo changes that ended up only jacking up PvE.
So what do you think, is sniping a problem in the current meta?

2 RepliesHowabout we balance the AA on every sniper... So people who are actually skilled at sniping dont get quickscoped by skill-less neanderthals running with the highest AA sniper

No. People need to learn to deal with stuff. Or maybe I'm just really calm somehow.
-
It's a problem because it keeps -blam!-ing up PvE

5 RepliesEdited by GigaMode: 7/15/2016 5:23:43 PMI voted yes, but I'm genuinely confused as to why people believe primaries have anything to do with it. There are so many people insanely good at sniping now, that literally if you see the red light, it's too late. At several different ranges. I don't understand why you think having a stronger primary (aside from high caliber rounds, and assuming you survive the first sniper shot) will do anything to help your TTK when you're still the first one dying. Snipers have THE BEST TTK. They will never make a standard primary that matches the TTK of a sniper, it just won't happen. This is why you have to hit snipers themselves by making them harder to use.

5 RepliesI don't think they should be nerfed. They do exactly what they are supposed to do. One shot to the head, 2 to the body. What more do you want?
-
6 RepliesBungie says that they don't seperate PvP from PvE in the sandbox so that your guardian will feel the same in both modes. Then explain why there is a noticable sniper flinch when shot in PvE and not nearly as affective of a flinch in PvP? Bungie needs to reverse the ammo economy nerf and rework the sniping mechanic in PvP altogether. Several things can be done that bungie doesn't do. Nerf the tar out of aim assist, or remove it flat out. Add sway and hold breath to steady aim. Lose breath on hit and over a period of time. Descope when hit (at least descope on crit and each hit during crit). If none of these then carpet nerf RoF on the entire class.

I get killed by shotguns just as much as I get killed by snipers. And I get killed a lot!

I think that primaries have been nerfed to the point that they don't compete with specials anymore. Bring the over all ttk for primaries down and people will use them more.

20 RepliesEdited by Xii Alpha iiXx: 7/15/2016 10:32:50 AMPeople are so flipping stupid. They wanted so many primary weapons nerfed. They got it and then complain about the the g0d damn results. Oh I can't kill them with my primary so snipers must be overpowered and a problem.. When in reality the lack of primary power is the issue. You sucked the joy out of pvp already. Seriously stop encouraging nerfs. The descope thing is absolutely the dumbest desire the game has ever faced. Snipers have no Hip fire reticle. They would become useless in pvp but mainly in pve. The flinch is still very high but with .8 primary kill times players have more time to counter the flinch. If they didn't have time to reset. It wouldn't matter. You people have to be year 2 players or Year 1 players who are just horrible at pvp. Not only that but if you actually took the time to do your research you would see that shotguns are used for more then sniper rifles. According to Guardian.gg this week more people use shotguns in most play list besides skirmish and Trials. This is the case most of the time. Shotguns are used more than snipers. In control snipers are normally around 10 percent while shotguns are around 19 percent. Shut up and stop trying to destroy pvp further because you are bad or don't understand how this game works.

4 RepliesI think perhaps the community is over-emphasizing the pervasiveness of snipers in the current meta. FWIW I did check 'yes' in the poll - they are definitely used a bit too much inside their intended range. Yes, many people run snipers now, WAY more than back in year 1, and there's a number of reasons for this: primaries are somewhat weaker, shotties got a nerf, and, most importantly, people have had 2 YEARS to practice with (on paper) the most versatile weapon type in the game. So how do we draw snipers back out into their intended range is the real question. Removing aim assist is a crap idea, and by now I think everyone knows why (and in case that's wrong, try quick-scoping a team mate - for which there's no aim assist - it doesn't work at all). I think this game's far too dynamic and action-oriented to implement a halo-style descope on hit, so let's bin that for now. Honestly, I think a breathing mechanic might not be so bad, I'd try it. How about this though: the majority of why snipers can handle in close encounters is due to a more than fair amount of aim assist. Since Bungie has shown they can make aim assist a variable based on distance from your target, how about snipers have an aim assist range between x and x+y meters? for example, you get crap AA 0-15 m, good AA 15-50m and poor AA again for 50m-beyond. Whatever the effective solution is, do realize you're still going to get quick-scoped on occasion, and that's fine. People practice for hours and hours to accomplish this. That said, I agree that the average sniper needs to be toned down a hair

14 RepliesSniping isn't the problem, primary weapons time to kill is the problem.

just make them 1 round in the cartridge and a decent reload time, and less body damage.

3 RepliesI'm a shot gunner and there's so many ways to counter a SG. Nades, tlw, other SG, melee ....... Yet sniper only has one counter, another sniper. If a primary hits first it should take a sniper out of scope. Just doing that would really balance things.
-
Edited by Ni Knight: 7/15/2016 12:34:14 PMI marked "no". Although it's annoying, I manage to counter, and I don't see that many snipers in the matches. There's always 2 or 3 in the other team, but generally only 1 uses it well, so, I focus on the others and try to be out of the guy's sight, lol. Maybe the meta is not so strong in brazil, or, the issue is in Trials, as I mostly play Clash and Control in pvp. But for me, it's not a big deal.

1 ReplyOne of the last clash games I played on the forgotten shore had the entire opposition hardscoping from on top of the structure past where the b and c control points would be. What has happened to the game.
-
Yes. But only because all the game's other weapons have been nerfed to the point where their TTK is either too long, or their performance is too unreliable. So basically snipers are free to move around the map, safe in the knowledge that (unless they make a big mistake) the only real (gun-based) threat to them is from another sniper.
-
2 RepliesI voted no.... But you should descope if you get hit in the head that would really help balance things everything else is fine honestly
-
Sols!!!!! Still at it huh? You are the quintessential optimist. Been away for a good while and yes, the bs sniper meta, unflinchable aiming snipers is still the same sadly. So is the 10yrd quick, and no scope. So much fun to get headshot while face massaging an opponent sniper at OTHER weapon ranges. Somethings never change and I once again find myself in total agreement with you even if it the % usage might be exaggerated. Usage is bedsides the point of mechanics anyway. Bungie, please introduce more emphatic flinch for snipers ads when getting bullet massaged in the head by any weapon, it is only fair and reasonable. BTW, what is the point of high calibre rounds if they don't do anything in pvp. And yes I have tested it out with several different guns at their intended ranges. Very little difference was noted by the snipers I was face massaging. End of line.

It's bearable in 6v6 but it's a scourge in 3v3. They need to go back to high impact low aim assist and punish being under fire. I would like headshots to redden the screen like thorn until you descope and get worst with each shot but based on damage. So two high impact sniper shots should make your view basically just a red blur, but a couple auto shots would be manageable for a short time
