Two VoG Experiences and Why I Enjoy Destiny

I have two little experiences in the Vault of Glass which I think reminded me of just why I like this game and why people I think talk about it the way that they do. In both instances, a friend and I joined a group of strangers to play the raid. In the first run we joined a team that claimed they could do the raid with their eyes closed. And they weren't kidding. The fire team leader was a master of the Vault. He knew every route and every exploit to a tee. He also had no time for fooling around. He yelled at players who didn't follow his instructions perfectly and talked down to non-30s. When someone mentioned that cheesing the Templar was "ridiculously boring" he responded, "Do you want your Raid gear or not?" We breezed through in less than an hour. At the end the fire team leader reminded us that we could have done it better, and one of his friends, who did not receive a raid chestplate at the end, threw a fit, claiming that "I just wasted an hour of my life. -blam!- this game, I'm done with it." My friend and I decided never to join on with strangers again. -------------- Despite this promise we joined another group next week. We were extremely disorganized. We were all Titans. We died many, many times. And we swore and laughed through the whole thing. When we finally made it to Atheon, I utterly botched our first attempt: I wasn't looking where I was going, and fell down a pit at a crucial moment. I apologized profusely: the fire team leader laughed and said, "It's just a game, no point in blaming people." In the end, we never beat the raid. We just couldn't do it. And we all quit with our tails between our legs. And I made four new friends. My question is, which time do you think I valued more: the one that gave me a bunch of sweet gear, or the one that gave me four new friends?
