What we call “fire” is the release of electromagnetic energy (light and heat) by the combination of substances (fuel) that can have the energy of their chemical bonds broken down and rapidly released (exothermic) in the presence of an oxidizer (usually oxygen which breaks those bonds) and a triggering energy source (spark, ignition source) The light and heat represents the energy of motion contained by those chemical bonds(oversimplification but more detail than that requires going into quantum theory, and a level of physical chemistry I don’t want to delve into). When we talk about nuclear reactions we are generally talking about forming or breaking new connections between subatomic particles and transforming that energy ...and any motion/thermal energy associated with those particles into a release of electromagnetic energy (fusion and fission) or particle -based radiation (fission). Now to the meat of the matter. All of this boils down to—-wether you are talking conventional fire, or the power of stars—-the transformation of one form of energy into another... and releasing it. Freezing represents the removing of energy. The second law of thermodynamics states that over time objects go from states of higher complexity to lower complexity (entropy). Objects that are being heated are in a state of higher complexity because more potential states of being are available to it. Cold object exist in states of lower complexity because fewer energetic states are available. That’s why heat always moves from warm to cold...and hot objects cool unless you continue to supply them energy to maintain that state. So a condition that rapidly cools has the ability to accelerate a process of energy loss, that a flaming or radiating object is already committed to.... it will quickly douse that energy by absorbing it. TLDR: If I drop a burning match into a beaker of liquid nitrogen—-air that has been cooled so much that it’s turned the nitrogen gas into a liquid (phase transition) it will quickly douse that match. Because the capacity of that liquid nitrogen to absorb energy (because so much was removed in cooling it) far exceeds the ability of that match to release energy. Water works the same way in dousing most fires. It cools the fuel, making it harder to heat. Plus it has the ability to absorb a massive amount of energy before it finally boils of and transforms (phase transition) into a gas (water vapor/steam). Make sense?

He didn’t give a short version, saying “physics” is like someone asking a what kind of question they are working on and me saying “math” Its not descriptive Anyways his example about a flame is dead wrong as a example, a correct example would be lighting a flame and it dying out over time with no human interference. Or a better one is when smoldering embers cool down and are just ash.
