I don't really understand it either, but I think I may know part of the reason we keep asking this question:
When we create characters, there are some of us (myself included), that project ourselves on our character -we see the character as ourselves.
I think there is a minority (just seems there are fewer to me, but still a significant number) of players who are detached from their character, and see it as a individual outside themselves. Those are your male/female crossovers. Those players like to build characters totally inverse of who they are.
Then there's probably trans-genders here and there that identify with the opposite sex. But much like real life, they are truly low-frequency.

I never make a human if there's another species available. I also like to make my characters bald, and I am not at all bald. Also, I prefer games where I get to shoot and kill things, but I don't own a gun in real life. I think far more people see themselves as "detached" from their game characters than you might think. Unless you're always making a toon that looks exactly like you, and makes the exact choices that you would make in real life, then you are also experiencing a certain level of detachment. Some people just take it in different directions.

True that... I was just focusing on the male female detachment for the sake of the argument. I drew the minority aspect from myself, and friends I have in real life that have games together. It just always seemed we were creating some variations of ourselves... It was a completely speculative notion of minority.

I understood what you meant. Just bringing a different perspective to the table. :) Gender gets a disproportionate amount of focus on these forums, but nobody ever asks people's motives for making a toon of a different species, or with green hair, or running around with a machine gun. But really, all those choices share similar reasoning. We choose them because we want to. Some things we choose because we feel like it reflects who we are. Some things we choose because it reflects something we'd like to be. And some things we choose just because it's fun, or it looks cool.
