I gave Trials a try after a 5 year break, played 100 matches - my thoughts

Let me start by saying that I am aware that I am bad at Trials, which is part of the reason why I took a 5 year break from the game mode. I am basically average in 6s/IB (slightly above 1 kd), but struggle in modes like comp. elim, and of course, Trials. Back in D1, I was never able to get close to flawless, and therefore never able to get close to worthwhile rewards, so I stopped playing Trials in 2016, with my last matches being to finish a triumph from the Rise of Iron Record Book (5 completed passages (thanks DIM)). When Trials of the Nine came around in D2, I waited to see the feedback, and decided it hadn’t changed enough to participate. When Trials of Osiris returned with the D1 format, I certainly wasn’t going to participate in a mode I loathed, detested, and viscerally hated from D1. When Bungie allowed for matchmaking and getting rewards from merely grinding out round wins, I decided I should give them the benefit of the doubt and try it out. I was out of town the first Trails week of season 15, so had to wait until this week. I played 100 matches (all solo) and went 40-60. My k/d was an impressive 0.57 (0.90 eff). My best stretch was going 6 of 7 while on a flawed 7-win ticket. The closest I got to flawless was 4 wins during a 5 of 7 stretch to finish the week. The “best” days for me were Friday and Monday (Monday night, I went 10-10, probably due to the shrinking non-flawless pool). Overall, I found my experience thoroughly … tolerable. The reason being that, while I only occasionally had fun in terms of gameplay, I was at least getting fresh loot out of it. My main concern is when the loot runs stale (i.e., I get everything I need), I don’t see myself continuing to play, as during the heart of the weekend, I was struggling to win 1/3 of my matches against stacked teams that often out-skilled me by significant margins. I had one match in which the ELOs of the enemy team were all 1800-2600, with me sitting comfy at around 900, and my teammates were all in the same range as me, which made for an … interesting experience. One issue I had was that playing on a flawed 7-win ticket put me into Lighthouse matches, and I didn’t realize it until I started noticing the message in the lower left that indicated teams that beat me had gone flawless. This didn’t make sense to me. I was simply trying to farm XP with Saint XIV – wins/losses weren’t really important at the time. In a mode advertised as end game, I am surprised that I would be the final boss. I am about as challenging an “end game” PvP boss as a lost sector boss would be in PvE. I am not sure I am worthy of being the final barrier to the Lighthouse - Saint could do better. I also feel sorry for any teammates that needed any of those lost matches for their own flawless tickets. If I just want to farm XP with Saint, why am I in that caliber of match? For now, I will continue to try it, but definitely not at the 100 match/weekend pace. I still want to unlock 2 armor pieces on my titan, as well as better rolls on weapons. I also am going to play until I get the ascendant shard from resetting my rank with Saint X!V. Beyond that, I don’t see myself playing Trials, except when they add to the loot pool. The reason is that it just isn’t fun to enter a game mode that may as well be called “Cannon Fodder”. The excitement from an occasional clutch play to close out a round or match just isn’t enough to overcome the frustration of losing 2/3 of the time. Maybe the freelance weekend will be more fun, and maybe some of the other things they experiment with will be fun (maybe they’ll try SBMM for a week in labs), but being cannon fodder for no rewards isn’t something I will be doing after I run out of loot to chase. In conclusion, I have to give credit to Bungie for giving me a reason to end my 5-year “boycott” of Trials. Despite only going 40-60, I did better than I expected. I didn’t expect to get flawless, so I got what I thought I would – some loot. What Bungie, and the community, has to decide is what Trials is going to look like after the casuals and solos get their loot. Unless they make the experience more palatable, I expect that most of them, like me, will leave the playlist if we are merely being asked to be cannon fodder for the higher-skilled players. Will Trials go back to steadily-declining player numbers, or will they find a formula that makes it work for more people?

  • As a not so good pvp guy, it means a few extra weapons for me to farm, without all the lfg hassle, better than before, but the armor isn't as pretty as exile armor, no complaints though, low level farming, free for anyone to just hop in for 3 wins and get some loot cheap.

  • I honestly enjoy Trials now, while I was still carried to flawless the first week I was surprised that I fought my way to flawless the second week. Moving players to a flawless pool after accomplishing the feat once is great in my opinion, those of us looking to reach the lighthouse have a better chance as the sweats have moved into their own little pool. Even after going flawless myself I did not mind aging in the sweat pool as at that point I was just grinding experience and the occasional win. I hope these changes remain, getting crapped on a regular basis in Trials was the reason I avoided the game mode like the plague

    • On Monday I went Flawless, SOLO. And I've only played 8 matches. Before i couldn't win a single round when playing with friends in a full fireteam.

        Today I played 8 matches in the solo queue. I think I did ok but still lost 6 of 8. Not very encouraging but I'm propably the worst player in the world so what could I expect. Even lost one game where chance of winning was 98% (according to DTR). Not sure if I should laugh or cry. Propably laugh because I stopped giving a -blam!- lol

        • I agree, the main issue will be that the value of loot will lower as time goes by and people get the drops and rolls they want/need. The other issue as with all of PvP is lobby balancing. Regardless of the type of matchmaking, as long as there are any solo players, lobby balancing will be a major factor to how the game plays out. Sometimes one side has very good players with one not so good player while the other side has all average players, other times the game has all not so good players with one very good player, etc. Lobby balancing is wack and it needs to be addressed.

        • I think first weekend of trials would achieve a stable increase in population. I think that if it stays like it is now the population will slowly decrease snd it will be carry streams only again farming non flawless pool people. Funny how streamers doing this say they care about the community when they are actually harming it by doing this for self gain.

        • I enjoy trials for one thing, the rewards i go and win 7 games no matter if i win or loose then i start farming for loot. Awesome only downside is that i think they will have to give loot for people that loose instead of nothing. But apart from that i love it.

        • My trials K/D from this last weekend was terrible but it was my first time going flawless as well. Having a good fireteam with skill and coordination is key. Bungie needs to add a solo playlist like Iron Banner and Survival. Most people are not good enough to play against a 3 stack when solo.

            • I still think they should rotate the old armor and weapons in every other week that way the stuff is somewhat new, I mean if they're planning on keeping the reward and ranking system the way it is then they should. I tell you why yes I still do have to get my first flawless (whenever that may be) I've already gotten god rolls on all the weapons and already got most of the new armor so I have little to no point in playing trials after that first week. Once again I only say they should add the old stuff and rotate it so we can get "new" stuff.

            • It's nice to actually have Trials armour after not even wanting to touch it since it came out. Kinda hope Bungie brings back the Scarab gear, that was some truly spicy armour!

            • I like consistency. Trials doesn’t feel consistent, probably just gonna stay away and get my fix with other game’s pvp. Pvp in this game just doesn’t feel right whether the toxic gameplay or farming of lesser players.

            • Nice writeup. I think most of us feel similar. I'm losing 2/3 of my matches. Seems like Bungie is throwing some players easy flawless runs. Freelance isn't going to change how they determine your true ability or correct the broke team balancing. I had some fun this weekend, but I'm guessing the bottom is going to start to fall out.

              • I took screenshots of my DestinyTracker info because I’ve played 250 (ish) trials matches in d2. 92of those (at the time) were this season. 18 were this weekend. Overall my win/loss was 30/70 This season it was 50/50 And this week it was 73/28. My overall kd was a .9 My seasonal was 1.3 And my weekly was a 2.0 or something. The old trials layout was unplayable for me. I was also getting stomped so bad, I wasn’t improving at all. Last week was better, as I was able to get loot, but I was getting stomped so often, I didn’t feel like I was improving AT ALL. This week I waited until Sunday night. I hopped in and got 7 wins in 9 games. (Last week it took me 25 games to get 7 wins.) Mind you, once I got 7 wins, the matches got harder and I was back to 50/50 wins, roughly. I didn’t go flawless, but it kept me playing for non adept engrams. I was also matching against relatively skilled players and I found myself working to outmaneuver situations and I actually FELT myself improving and learning situations to avoid and how to avoid them. I think that was the most important takeaway for me. I didn’t get as much loot as last week, but that’s fine. I feel like I learned so much and improved so much over the 40 games I played this weekend. I’m pretty stoked about that.

                • I enjoyed it. Had a few 7-1 tickets and then figured out to keep the ticket at 7 wins and every win I would get engrams for more loot. The system is better. I’m a fan

                    • I never played trials before this past weekend. The changes seemed enticing so I jumped in solo. I kept expectations low, didn’t attempt flawless, and just focused on progressing for loot. I had a good time, got loot that I never thought I’d get, and enjoyed the experience without added pressure. Maybe I got lucky, but I finished with a 78% win rate and a 13 game win streak. Should’ve went for the flawless ticket I suppose…

                      • I think people experiencing harder battles in the middle rather than the end makes sense in an attempt to get more people to the tower. THey fail quicker if they hit their peak mid way, and suffer fewer chances after that to finaly go flawless. You ultimately would have faced just as hard of a player set presumably, but now you do it earlier in your matches to keep from having to grind grind grind fail and start all over again.

                      • The ultimate issue with trials will always be the matchmaking. In any competetive more where skill level isn't taken into consdieration, you're always going to have loads of blatantly stupid mismatches. Sweats feed off that and claim it's thier right to farm players much lesser skilled because it's an end game mode - but the reality is they just want the easy wins. In it's current form trials is more rewarding but I can see it getting stale pretty fast. There's only so many weekends You can only tolerate (as a solo player) stacked teams teabagging for the same loot week after week so while the last two weeks have seen highs, I expect it will start to drop off pretty soon.
