The Toxicity: What PvP does to me
Like many Destiny players, I dabble in PvP and PvE. For me the draw to PvP is simple: AI are not nearly as challenging as a human opponent. But I wonder how many people are bothered by how frustrated and toxic PvP can be.
I cannot believe some of the things that come out of my mouth when playing crucible. It really brings out the worst in me. After a frustrating session my toxicity lingers into my private life. I am short with people and feel on edge.
Call it thin skin or a temper problem, but getting the toxic messages I receive and send make me want to rip someone’s throat out. I question why the developer has created a handful of emotes that seem to have been created expressly for this purpose. I know there are well-adjusted people out there that don’t get bothered by this, but I also know a lot of us aren’t so gifted.
Now I am an older guy with a family and am relatively secure economically and emotionally. But I worry about younger and more fragile members of our community. Now before 1,000 19 year old masculinity signalers down vote this into oblivion because they don’t know the difference between being a man and being a heartless jerk, take a moment to think about what I have said. I am not saying this isn’t my problem, but I am wondering how widespread it is.
Edit: TLDR I have some anger and frustration issues that PVP seems to build upon. I’ve tried to make clear that it’s a me issue and not a bungie issue.

It’s like that in most game, to be fair. I find it infuriating as well. There are so many things that happen where you think “WHAAAT???! ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME?!!” and then Shaxx is like “Defeat ... comes to all of us...” and I’m like “Yeah, bltch, especially in this shlt show of a game where everybody can shoot through walls and there’s zero matchmaking...”. So, I get it. But there’s no way around it other than avoiding PvP altogether. Don’t even get me started on t-bagging or hate messages... unbelievable how some people feel they have to harass you after they have won against you.

1 OdpowiedźFirstly I agree with you that PVP does bring out toxicity in players. And it is also great that you have been able to recognize this in yourself. But if this does bleed into your life when not playing, even just immediately afterward, you need to stop playing competitive games or find or train yourself to not react in this way. This is a mental health issue and unfortunately over time they grow. IMHO ballplayers need to stop believing that playing a video game is anything but just that. Being good at one doesn't make you better at life or have a life-improving skill. Video games and sports and should not be taken as seriously as some do. This isn't going to change except for each individual coming to that realization and then the toxic nature of those "fans" will leave over time. Also, I think if these companies got away from protecting and coddling what they see as emotionally fragile players, and removed these anti name and shame rules, then there would be consequences for toxic players.

7 OdpowiedziOur status in society (and opportunity to reproduce, evoutionarily) is determined through competition. So it has the ability to trigger things in people that are really very primal...and can sometimes trigger our surivival/fight-flee-freeze instincts. The issue is that traditional competitive endeavors, like sports, have a CULTURE that have grown up around them that teach (and enforce) standards and limits around these toxic behaviors. If you are young and grow up in these sports, you are also taught how to recognize and manage the negative emotions that can come up around losing. But in competitive video gamging...there are NONE of these guardrails. No culture of sportsmanship to teach or enforce standards of behavior. No examples or modeling of how to handle the emotions around winning or losing. ...and no financial incentive by the game developers to police any of this beyond a minimal level. (Starts to cut into profits). Add to that the anonymity of the internet, so there is very little personal accounability (most FPS are FTP....so if you get banned, just make a new account and get back in there)? You have situation that can really bring out some jaw-droppingly bad behavior. The truly WORST aspects of being human. I still remember the video from a few years ago where Drift0r was playing Overwatch with his wife...and two wastes-of-skin literally started to sexually harrass her in chat....right in front of him...knowing that he was her husband. All because they knew that there would be nothing he could do in that that environment to stop it. So they are emboldened to act out in ways that most of these.....ahem...".individuals" wouldn't have the courage to try IRL.

1 OdpowiedźSome people really can’t handle competitive video games. I’m not knocking you, just observing that you’re definitely not alone. I think it’s because they’re designed to amplify and key up emotions to an extreme degree, and if you’re not someone capable of reining that in then it can get nasty. A tip: go into each match with this goal: “I will lose and probably be at the bottom of the leaderboard. This is what I expect, and anything better will be considered a victory.” Sure, shooting for low targets isn’t generally a way to succeed, but if you’re emotional spectrum is unbalanced by these games then it’s a very good way to ensure that dopamine is flowing with every little success, rather than angry juice. 1 OdpowiedźAs an older player, I feel your pain lol. I'm a casual/crappy PVP player so I only go in to get bounties, IB or mayhem. If you're agitated at the game after you turn it off, you have to step away. It's really not worth upsetting a family member because someone shot you in the head from across the map with a pea shooter, or slid through a wall at you with a shotty, or absorbed the rocket launcher round you shot at them from 3 feet away. Change your message settings to friends only and the hate mail will subside. As for all the bagging/emotes, it's just a character.

2 OdpowiedziI dunno. I don’t get mad from messages. I came up playing in Halo and CoD lobbies were the trash talk was insane. The messages I get from Destiny players makes me laugh. Also if your sending them...you can’t really complain about getting them. You’re getting what you give.

4 OdpowiedziQuickplay is cancer. Competitive & Iron Banner are Hell. Trials is basically Hell + a bunch of puppies dying. The only Crucible playlist that is even remotely enjoyable is Mayhem. Only problem with Mayhem is the skill-deprived picks spamming Stasis like batshit crazy.

1 OdpowiedźAbsolutely with ya! I’ve never wished a case of aids on more people than I have in crucible. Even to the point where I hoped they were the only male in the family that way the aids would eliminate the family line!

Why allow the little toxic kids to get under your skin when it’s not necessary at all ? Only allow your friends list to be part of the messaging never leave it open to the idiot public.

We all know most sweaty players check KDs before the match so they know I’m not good anyway. It’s like wow good job, you’re that glad you beat a player below a 1.00? It’s honestly so pathetic that it makes me smile when they teabag... knowing how utterly fruitless their real life is. 😁 So don’t let what they do bother you. You shouldn’t care. I know easier said than done but honestly life is way too short and their wasting theirs electronically teabagging a random player 😑🤣

1 OdpowiedźYeah I get that way too man, your best bet is to take a break and play something else. I play destiny a lot but I take breaks when I start feeling burned out, bored or tired of the pvp BS. Do you have a pc? I play skyrim or fallout 4 and I mod my games, nothing beats having a pve looter shooter on fallout 4 or a true rpg experience in skyrim if you modify your game to play that way. The best part is you have all the power on the world to dictate how perfect your game can be and you never risk ever getting toxic since Skyrim and fallout 4 are pve games. All im saying is, find something to play thats more relaxing, it does wonders for people like you and I.

1 OdpowiedźI liked it better when we were allowed to take our rage out on the enemy team like in COD instead of being funneled into our own team chat in this game. In trying to prevent players from being toxic to the other team, Bungie created a more toxic environment for players get yelled at by their team mates. I don't think I've played a single game in recent for Gambit or Iron Banner where people on my own team aren't trashtalking the bottom rung players because someone threw for some bounty grind. You also have the added stress of real-world politics and people are venting their emotions into the game which when things don't go their way, it can amplify that stress and people will say and do things they won't normally do in real life.

I'm very average at PvP but I play matches where I can't even tell who is on my team ( no over head tag on players character) , ghost bullets , my character will not fire gun , will not throw grenade or punch and pop up way to much pop up, for where I live I have the best internet I can get , but you got psn and bungie connection to deal with ! No when that ain't working right and lag , I become like a different person ! It's a little concerning to even me sometimes as well as the rest of the people I live with , just rage and rage and it's only game . I'm trying to control myself a bit more , trying.

Bad connection, horrible matchmaking, unbalanced teams, too many toxic players in Trials of Osiris and Survival, one-hit-kill weapons left and right, endless supply of special ammo for apes, broken subclasses that never get fixed... The list goes on. I don't mind losing a fun game, but man, most of the ones I lose just feel impossible to win, for one reason or another.

1 OdpowiedźHonestly just focus on having fun and killing as much as you can, sometimes on survival i get guys that kill me and rush every time to my body and tbag me, i just ignore it and carry on doing my best cause my focus is winning, not making random rivals on 1 match just because they tbag because in the end i will probably never see them again, seriously just ignore those players who emote and tbag when they kill you its more frustrating for them when you just play normally while ignoring them because thats what they want, attention through reaction, even worse is when you win the match after being tbagged and completely ignoring them, got a few toxic PM messages for that reason, again ignore as well any PM, just give them dead silence, chill out, play the game, and ignore these toxic players as you would ignore a barking dog, good luck 👍

I find PvP fun honestly, just get in the mindset of having fun, if someone messages you hate laugh it off, if I ever receive hate messages I usually just laugh, got a hate message before when I played Titanfall 2 saying basically your a noob, funnily he was a guy that used spitfire (camp gun) while I used Kraber (projectile sniper) lol, just don’t get stuff stuck in your head, if you get frustrated take a break, play something else maybe, etc Have fun

2 OdpowiedziWe all have moments we’re not proud of, I’ve had my fair share frustrations in PvP. But When I was more PvP focused I would set limits for myself, especially in high pressure situations. If I was playing Competitive I would play to 3 wins or 2 losses, then put it down or do PvE.

So sick of playing against stasis+120+felwinters. When I play pvp nowadays I regularly say things that would absolutely get me kicked out of uni if they were recorded lol.

3 OdpowiedziFor me the cheating is what really pisses me off. Im fine with getting tbagged unless a dude with inifinite heavy does it. I just dismantled everything i possibly could on my character because of the cheating i am just done.

2 OdpowiedziI have exactly the same, but only in unfair matches, where i see the enemy appear on my screen a second too late and my bullets not doing damage: almost every match. I play only FPS PvP regularly for 16 years and the only game i (still) experience this is Destiny PvP. Also i've spent a lot of money for the best internet i can get (at this moment Fiber Optics 1Gb/1GB with Cat7 cables), but the better internet i got in the last 7 years, the worst experience in Destiny PvP. Destiny PvP feels like gambling. You know that there are those matches, where the enemies melt like nothing. So you struggle, untill you get that one match (maybe 1 in 5), where you feel powerful. Same like in Gambling: You win some money and then you play further, because you know that the machine will give you something, eventually. But this should not be happening in 2021! We should win the fights we deserve to win and we should lose those gunfights, where we got outplayed. But not in Destiny PvP! In Destiny PvP there are players (probably the whole Top 5%) which are almost invincible. They need 1/3 bullets from what you need for a kill. And when watching many streamers, it looks like they are playing against BOTS. The most bullets miss them on their screens..... But for me, those situations are very familiar: MY BULLETS NOT DOING DAMAGE! The most of these problems are because of lag and delay: peer-to-peer, bad matchmaking, bad internets, VPN's. I'm addicted to Destiny and in the last years i only play this game. But i can't wait for the replacement, because Destiny is destroying me.
