The Cost of Masterworking One Armor Piece

Hi, there. As I'm sure many of you have already realized and some of you might soon realize, Armor 2.0 isn't all it's cracked up to be. Either through massive blunder and mis-execution, ignorance of players' outcry for a nerf to the cost of a Masterwork, or as an act to deliberately infuriate players, Bungie has once again taken a very simple problem with a very simple solution and somehow made it much, much worse. Without really talking about what else makes Armor 2.0 a disaster (like arbitrarily attaching elements to mods for no real reason than to artificially inflate gameplay time or changing the amount of dice you have to roll to get a piece of armor you want from two (perk slots) to six (attribute rolls), I want to go over the most glaring issue. The one the community has been begging to be fixed since before I started playing again in Forsaken after my post-Vanilla hiatus. In it's old state, Masterworking a single armor piece costed a significant amount of enhancement cores, a relatively rare resource. Enough, in fact, that I never bothered to Masterwork a single armor piece because I could not justify the time spent versus the reward. After listening attentively to it's community, Bungie changed that system by adding two new resources with which to upgrade armor, one of which costs some of the other and the other of which costs enhancement cores. The problem arises in how the cost of the two interact. The resource you need to finalize a masterwork costs ten of the resource before it. And that doesn't sound too terribly bad at first, until you realize what it costs to buy the first resource. Each one costs 10 enhancement cores, 25 Planetary Materials, and 10,000 (yes, that's ten thousand) Glimmer. If you need ten of these to get the last piece you need, you'll end up paying 250 Planetary Mats, 100 Enhancement Cores, and 100,000 (one hundred thousand) Glimmer. And that might not sound too bad. But you need two of those final resources, meaning that instead of 10 of the one before, you'll need twenty. This will cost you 500 Planetary Materials, 200 Enhancement Cores and 200,000 Glimmer. This is what the last two of ten steps in Masterworking a single piece of armor is. If you wanted to masterwork a whole set (helm, arms, chest, legs, class), it would cost you 2,500 Planetary Materials, 1,000 Enhancement Cores and 1,000,000 Glimmer. And that's just for those last two resources you need. That doesn't count the fact that you have to use the resources you need ten apiece of on your armor just to get to the step where you have to spend ten of them for the other resource. Oh, and there's an inventory cap on both of these resources, both I believe are below 30. So don't get your hopes up on stockpiling. Just to sort of let you guys know what you're in for if you haven't started yet. Edit: I know you shouldn't expect to Masterwork an armor set in the first week. I know the mats drop from other activities. This post is about the fact that the community begged Bungie to tone down Masterworking cost and they responded by increasing it exponentially and complicating it.

  • If people are looking for a 'run and gun' everything drops in your lap game then I would suggest BL3. Shadowkeep armor will take a lot of grinding, thought and economizing when upgrading. I'm okay with that but it seems others are not.

What was the problem with the masterwork system from Year 1 again? Was it not annoying and grindy enough? What was wrong with the infusion system from Age of Triumph? Did it work too well? Either Bungie thinks we all play Destiny for a living, or they just don't give a shit about normal players. You know, the vast majority of players who play their game.

      • Don’t worry, many players were running with thousands and thousands of enhancement cores. You know those that used the pinnacle weapon glitch. The rest? Enjoy your crappy blues.

        • My blue armour doesn’t need MasterWorked! The whole game ‘economy’ is stupid beyond belief. Considering all the resources, grinding, expense and boredom needed for the old system, the new one is just ‘nah...not gonna bother.’ The amount of tedium needed repeating activities for ‘top level’ gear to do what exactly? The same activities you’ve already done a thousand times before microscopically differently ‘cause you got a MW’d helmet on...? At least you can make it look nice! Personally, I like my Hunter hand-bag which has my lippy, a bit of nice perfume and a ‘nana in it for when the spiky Hive are getting a bit grumpy! Use what ya got; enjoy the game (if you can) -blam!- MW!

        • The sad part is that nothing in this game is worth grinding for. I gave up grinding for stuff a long time ago as the end results are always the same. I may eventually get the thing and by the time I get it it will be late in the game and will be useless soon and/or the thing I grinded for ends up not even being all that great and/or by the time I get it, if at all, I am burned out. I am no longer interested in playing the same thing over and over hoping to get that one thing. Its ridiculous. More items need to be obtainable through the natural course of playing and they need to have way more quests. I felt the death bringer quest had a decent balance with some interesting steps specifically the end mission etc. More things like this. Some quests can be more in depth and take more time some can be less but quests are a good way to alleviate the dumb grind.

        • Thank you for making this post. I was thinking of doing the same, but luckily I found yours. The worse part is that you can triple the costs to masterwork an exotic piece of armor. It makes no sense. I have 270 enhancement cores and I can’t even masterwork ONE piece of exotic armor… :S Going from year 1 to year 2 I had to drop two of my three characters. Now I’m in doubt if I can even play one character for 100%. I wonder if the people who play D2 for a living can fully play 3 characters… I wouldn’t be surprised if the person at Bungie that made the original quests for The Mountaintop also calculated the materials needed to masterwork armor. Anyway, the inflation rate is insane.

        • So people complain that nothing to do in the game and everyone is maxed with no need to farm or grind so bungie makes it harder to rank everthing up and give you something to play and work towards and people still complain. I personally like having something to work towards instead of maxing out 1 week after a new expansion. Play and enjoy.

          • But you only need to masterwork one set of armor and then just switch the perks as you want. So it’ll be more worth in the long run but in short term, it blows.

          • Bump. New light players are screwed. I had around 1500 masterwork cores coming in and thought I was set. Now I would need like 10000 to masterwork a set of each element on each character. F me.

            • 1) you are supposed to get masterwork materials from in game activities you aren’t supposed to buy them unless you have massive stockpiles from the previous years. 2) masterworking armor seems more useful now. You’re armor gets tangibly better and you can easily swap perks and appearance. Really I’ll only need to run one set now probably. Maybe end up with one of each element in the long run but no huge rush. 3) the system isn’t one you can just burn through- it will take time to get a good set up instead of just brute forcing rng

            • Here’s my hot take that I posted somewhere else: We are 2 days in* (one if you count that other server break day) and we are already adding up the core cost for gear? You realize you can earn these things via endgame activities that obviously you don’t have access to cause you know, you just started the game. Can we all take a chill pill with this for at least a week or so and if it really is a problem like it was to most before, then complain. At the moment, zero complaints about the system from me cause I know well enough to not infuse and masterwork every little piece of armor. I learned that the hard way in the beginning of Forsaken lol ***
it was 2 at the time
• Game is free to play now. Expect grind and Bungie to 'assist' you in ways to shorten the grind. All it will take is a 'small' investment of real $$$$ by you. And remember it's not P2W, it's pay to advance faster. I've played War Thunder and World of Tanks/Warships/Warplanes enough to have known where Destiny was going the minute it went F2P. An old YouTuber for World of Tanks, Sliphantom aka Super Noodle, made a decent video on things with WoT. Though in a WoT issue I think it explains decently in most F2P games. And as a F2P game now it's doubtful Jim Sterling will even touch any issue here. The only reason he cared about WoT was when they copyright striked Sir Foch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gSo91xLNvc&t=1s

            • So what you're saying is, masterworking a complete armor set is not something i should be doing on Day 2? It should be a player-driven goal that I work towards throughout the season? I'm being given the choice of what armor perks and stats I want to use for end-game level activities and I can also customize the armor further than I've ever been able to before? I can constantly be crafting and min-maxing my build weeks into shadowkeep? I can grind for the resources or buy most of them from spider/ banshee?? Wow, that's a real problem =/

                • I feel as though EVERY change they made was for the battlepass... They did exactly what activision did with cod. They flooded the game with more materials and items that serve no purpose just so that they can fill 100 seperate levels of the battlepass... Bungie said cores would no lonmger be needed for infusion however in order to purchase an upgrade mod you must spend 1 core + many other materials.. and now they added other useless materials for masterowrking..... This update is TERRIBLE... (except PVP. the crucible improvements are awesome) Plenty of other additions/changes to the game that were unnecessary but ill save that rant for later. This expansion was a cash-grab. Almost all of the content is from D1. Awesome for nostalgia but just 2 days in and the nostalgia is gone. The game is much worse than now... and on PC matchmaking barelyt works.. Cant play menagerie, the new strike or even public events on the moon because the matchmaking doesnt work.... IM SORRY IM DONE COMPLAINING. Enjoy grinding for hours just to infuse a single weapon..

Then again I'm not really focused on fully upgrading any armor till I hit the higher levels anyway. (Granted I do occasionally upgrade them, but only up until it costs cores in which I'd rather save up for the upgrade modules)
