What follows is a detailed account of my one and only competitive match I will play this season. The names have been changed to protect the innocent, but the events have been told to the best of my recollection.
Please take this with a grain of salt. I work in the research/statistics field for a living and would never claim such a limited anecdotal experience is representative of the population. That said, I do find it comical how closely this seems to match the experiences of those who have put their own sanity on the line in their quest for this season's pinnacle weapons.
Because the rewards looked so good, and because I needed every edge I could get I decided to spend the first 6 weeks grinding, leveling, and gearing to give myself the best shot I could. I made it to 600, studied all the new subclasses, and tested each extensively in quick-play and Iron Banner. Always being a fan of blink, I was partial to Nova Warp (OP discussions reserved for another time), and wasn't surprised to see their overall KDA confirmed via Guardian.GG and other sources.
Great! I had a subclass. Now to gear up with my most meta load-out possible.
Nova Warp - Check
Dust Rock w/ Range MW - Check
Trust w/ Outlaw/Rampage - Check
Wardcliff Coil - Check
Scavenger Perks - Check
Contraverse Hold - No? OK, how about any Forsaken Exotics at all? No? OK, nevermind, I digress.
OK, I was ready, let's do this!
After waiting in orbit for what seemed like a week, my ship finally rockets back to life confident that Bungie's foolproof matchmaking algorithm has selected the best possible competitive match for me and my soon-to-be brothers in arms.
I quickly check the roster, and find my first of many disappointments. Four solos vs. you guessed it, a four-stack. OK, not what I would have chosen, but what do I know? I'm not the Bungo-Tron-5000, and who am I to question our future robot overlord? Let's see who we're up against.
Of our four opponents one has Luna's Howl and one has Not Forgotten. Not a great start. All four are using high range SGs. One Chaperone. Two Warps and Two Barrages. OK, so they're a little further along than I am. Or maybe a lot further along, this being my first Comp match all season. But let's not despair.
But wait, there's one more detail about this team that seems suspicious. The two with Luna's/NF are from the same clan. And the other two? From two different clans. I'm not into conspiracy theories, but could these be account recoveries? Nah, I'm probably just paranoid, they probably just used LFG to round out their team like I would do if I was a little smarter and not a glutton for punishment hellbent on doing this on my own.
Let's reserve judgement for now and just do our best.
My next surprise comes when we begin our descent toward Earth. OK, Bannerfall?, Legions?, Midtown?. Nope. Vostok. Ugh! Does anyone really like this map?
No matter, we'll give it our best and I'm sure that we'll do just. . . F@$K!!! Countdown! Why not just keep Elimination, I mean did they really need to create objective game modes in compe. . . I'm sorry, I digress.
This is fine, we'll do fine. Let's go Team! Round 1!
Team? Team? Where's the rest of my team. I see AsianTomCruise, he's here and nice Wishender BTW. And there's Dildozer, suspiciously immobile, but where's Admiral_Snackbar? Is he still in a holding pattern somewhere over Trostlands? Nope, just gone. No warning, no explanation, just up and vanished like a fart in the wind.
OK, we're still OK, we've got this just stay togeth. . . Tom? Where's Tom? TOM!!!!, you're rushing them with a bow! Bold strategy, but he's AsianTomCruise, and that's kind of his thing. He must know something I don't. Wishender got a buff right? I mean sure it did, upon taking damage you now get an overshield equal to 10x damage taken and it fires Wolf-pack Rounds, Gjallarhorn style.
Oh, wait, no it doesn't do any of that, and. . . Oh hi shotgun. . . Round 2!!!
After an exceptionally long pause Tom and I spawn in on offense sans-Dildozer. Seems a little quick to be booted for inactivity, but hey I'm not Bungo-Tron-5000. This time ATC (that's what his friends call him) and I rush together. and attempt a flanking maneuver through the caves hopeful to get the drop on at least one of them.
Success!!! They've closed on us from every entrance trapping us in the middle of the cave. . . Shotgun blasts ensue. . .Round 3!
ATC had to bring mom some TP in the bathroom so I'm solo on this one. In an act of extreme cunning I decide to see how long I can play hide and seek with them. They didn't know I changed the game mode.
Shotgun blasts ensue. . . Round 4!
Blade Barrage . . . Round 5!
Nova Warp . . . Round 6!
Nova Warp . . . MY NOVA WARP!!! Payback time. . . Blade Barrage . . . Round 7!
Nova Warp . . . Your Team Loses!
Uninstall.
Seriously though, this was my first Comp match I've played all season and with little embellishment for comedic effect this is pretty much how it went. I'm not exaggerating when I say I won't play another match this season. Lunas/NF look great, but not worth the frustration, and my hats off to all of you who did it legit.
I'm just hoping they offer Luna's via a Broadsword style time-investment quest next season. I love Destiny and Crucible, but Comp is a different world. Between the paid carries and broken matchmaking it needs real work before its ever something I'd consider putting any serious time investment into.
Good Luck out there Guardians, I'm pulling for ya!
.
EDIT: Thanks to those who took the time to read, and got a laugh out of it. Just to clarify I'm really not trying to complain here. I really just wanted to see if comp was as bad as everyone makes it out to be this season, and thought it was funny I ran into almost all of the problems people complain about in a single match.
Loaded in with 3 teammates, matched against a 4-stack, players who were already Fabled/Legend rank, potential account recoveries (although this is an outside chance based only on the players being from different clans, probably not a recovery), AFK teammates, and another who didn't have the first clue. I totally expect anyone playing in a competitive team to use the best (meta) weapons and set-up.
If I really wanted to make a serious run at it I have friends who are great PvP Players, and made the grind for Redrix with them last season. Even after being carried though it was really painful and I just couldn't bring myself to do it again this season, but wanted to see if it had improved. Spoiler: It hasn't.

Ha. That's about right. Countdown is the absolute worst.

1 OdpowiedźJust a scrub Telesto user.

Got mine mostly solo and I haven’t stepped foot in comp since, if countdown wasn’t a game mode I’d play it a lot more often, survival is fun, clash and control are fun, I even liked breakthrough for the time it was here(didn’t have any of the horror story experiences others had). But the main thing is the matchmaking is atrocious, I won against a bunch of 4 stacks, and also lost against a bunch of 4 stacks, I’d literally sit at the matchmaking screen for 20 minutes watching it jump from 1 to 5 nearly every time, even if the stack were worse players they can still communicate better then 4 solos, 4 stacks should be in their own matchmaking, the solos,2 stacks and 3 stacks matchmake together
-
It’s a Poor Man’s ToO and the time it takes to get those hand cannons is asinine. I also tried it, played two, won two. Felt good to jump in and crush some sweaties in a stack. I will never play it again, take my undefeated record to my grave. Good post by the way.

1 OdpowiedźIm glad i got my lunas and quit comp. Was rage inducing running into players already with the gun or NF and I havent even hit fabled yet. People just piggybacking off of low rank players or just crap luck due to low player count. More of the former really

4 OdpowiedziIm at 1600 so theres no choice but to continue this far and yeah I -blam!-ing solo'd that points and I've had multiple mental breakdowns because of stupid teammates
-
4 OdpowiedziI mean, yeah there are some shitty games when you queue solo but really come on, quitting after one match dude?

Edytowany przez użytkownika Sevenv2: 10/30/2018 12:49:58 AMWhat exactly counts as a legit way to get it? Edit, other than account recoveries. I agree that shits gay

Yeah... After this last game, I'm out of the pvp side, it's broke, it's unfun, and not worth it
-
This was a funny fkn read thank you for that !!

So Funny!!! Great post. My favorite!!!
Nova Warp . . . MY NOVA WARP!!! Payback time. . . Blade Barrage . . . Round 7!
7 OdpowiedziHoly hell... what a novel. Just played a raid with a similar guy who wanted to give us a play by play of his last successful raid BEFORE we even played the first boss.... 10 minutes later and he was only halfway through his story about his badass thumb twiddling skills... so naturally I muted him and dropped down to start the first encounter mid story. Started talking over him about the raid we were actually in, told them I muted him... and the rest of the raid team did the same. Best part was we unmuted him after we cleared the boss and he was still rambling to himself... Nerds and their need for superfluous details.

Edytowany przez użytkownika Shanine1106: 10/30/2018 12:45:27 AMI tried the quest I believe 3 or 4 weeks ago I manage to get the 1st couple of steps in just 3 days of playing and no I didn’t grind like a hardcore I got a full time job and was my day off so I tried my luck. See the 1st week is pretty tough I immediately experienced the worst of the worst in competitive yet I still continue dunno why prolly just wanna waste my time and finally I’m on the last part which is reach fabled rank (yeah the hardest part of the quest ). 2nd week I played again tried my luck manage to get 1500 ish I played and played but it seems like I ain’t moving my points at all 9/10 games are stack vs solos it was a never ending hell of loop felt like I wanna quit but I remember I’m close why not keep doing it and see what happens. 3rd week is the worst of all week I’ve said I manage to get some edge vs stacks got some win streak on my hand then suddenly I ran with some ddoser’s It ain’t bs I got a video proof but sadly bungie took down the post just like they always do to protect this dirty bastards I was so mad I lose my streak just like that and that time after few games I literally stop playing comp coz -blam!- their MM method worst I’ve seen if all games I’ve played. Now after that week which is this week I was chillin in PVE for most part just to relax from that hellish grind until this past 3 days I felt good again no more stress so I thought I could do pvp again and try my luck guess I’m getting lucky coz I start winning again going toe to toe vs stacks with telesto or Luna/Not forgotten its tough but I manage to snatch some wins and finally bout to get Luna this coming Tuesday reset after they gave that bonus points in competitive and yeah feels great after all the rage, pain, stress, disappointment all of it are worth especially I did it solo.
-
I decided to grind solo all weekend for it and it’s definitely worth the grind. The gun is crazy good. I too used nova warp to give myself the best chance but I kept getting blade barraged every time I used it. From my experience, blade barrage would be best to use.
-
I found this post entertaining. It's refreshing to read a post that isn't simply "it sucks" or "git gud". I like the comedic flair. That said, I feel your pain. I'm on the last step of the Luna's quest and I've grinded to 1,000 Glory points almost entirely via solo queue. The grind is rough. One of the aspects that baffles me is even when I'm not matched against a stacked team or a fireteam of 4...despite the "chance" to actually win...more often than not it is someone on my team that leaves (or doesn't even make it in to the match). I keep thinking, "Statistically, this all has to even out, right? Eventually, I'll start getting put in matches where people on the other team will quit or spawn in with 3 people, right?" ...It's a good thing I don't gamble with real money because my logic would cost me my house.

2 OdpowiedziOh, man! This is hilarious! Also, I like Vostok. :)

Troll posts aren’t 20 paragraphs long. Try harder.
-
You're shit at the game get -blam!-ed
-
I appreciated this, gave me a laugh
-
No way in this world or the next should you ever be matched up against a team like at the comp level that you were at. Seriously Bungie this needs to be looked at. That is nowhere near the word competitive. It is one thing though, completely unfair. Unfortunately this is what Bungie deems competitive. We can only hope that it may be fixed someday.
-
Funny. And scary...
-
Yea this match making is broken for the most part. I was running with my clan, 5500, 4900, 5200 and myself at 2900. We matched 4 randoms under 700 lol
-
i swear if they make a broadsword style like quest im going to buy only used copies of their games
-
I don't mean to put you down, but the broadsword quest will be the only of its kind, ( I don't know for certain, just an educated guess). A bungie employee ready stated that the Luna quest we already have will carry over next season, so what'd be the point in giving us our progress if an easier quest will be available?
-
There are 2 tiers in Comp. The top 5%, and the 95% that get stomped. Count me in the majority.
