I think Auto Rifles aside from the Doctrine of Passing are still viable options in the Crucible. During this months Iron Banner I decided to use the Anguish of Drystan (Raid Auto) and I had an absolute blast! Granted this is just my experience with Autos but I'm sure there are similar happenings.
