No AR 15 for me. I did research and tested both, and went for the mini 14.

Don't own a Ruger yet. Why did you choose the Ranch Rifle over the AR platform out of curiosity?
-
Alot of it had to do with the simplicity and ruggedness of the design. The AR platform is very accurate but at the cost of having tight tolerances that somewhat reduce reliable performance in extreme conditions. The accuracy loss in the mini was negligible, and I'm not a good enough shot for it to make a difference. The Mini-14 can be fully disassembled (other than the trigger assembly) without any tools. They both have a distinguished military pedigree ( although the mini-14 is indirect, it being an evolution of sorts from the .308 m-14 ). Finally the ranch rifle has a standard rifle stock which is what I'm comfortable with, growing up with shotguns and hunting rifles. Mini 14 is also not viewed as a military style weapon, and less liable to restrictions similar to the "Asault Weapons" restrictions in the 90s.

Far better answer than the one I've seen too often and cringe everytime. "It's what they used on the A-Team." The Mini-14 is a great way to field the 5.56/.223 and not get sideways glances from those who assume that all black rifles are "made for war".

Well put and solid points. Been considering Ruger's Scout rifle as I am a firm believer in Jeff Cooper's vision of such things. For me it is the ability to build them and customize, drop the trigger pull and creep, etc.

Yeah the ability to customize them to such an extent definitely had its draw. Also they are soooo light almost like a toy. Definitely fun to shoot.
