We were all new to this game once, and we all had false ideas about how it's mechanics worked. Let's share some of the silly things we thought about Destiny when we were still noobs. For me, it was two things: the Loot Cave easter egg and elemental damage types.
I joined during The Dark Below, so I missed out on the Loot Cave. For one of the story missions you have to go up to Skywatch, and while there I explored a bit and eventually found the infamous Loot Cave. I went in and saw the pile of bones on the ground with the prompt to "press X to disturb the remains", so I did. At the exact same moment that the ghastly voices stopped speaking, my Super ability charged so I thought that the pile of bones was some kind of Super energy refill station. I ran out, saw a Blade of Crota (I miss those guys) terrorizing some Fallen, and unleashed my Nova Bomb onto it before running back to disturb the remains and refill my Super meter. Needless to say, nothing happened and I stood there confused until the pissed off Blade of Crota came charging into the cave and tore me a new asshole. Obviously at level 3, my Nova Bomb barely tickled that Hive warrior. (I only found out about how Super energy and the Super energy meter worked when I got a piece of armour that had "inverse shadow" as a perk.)
For the elemental damage types, I thought that majors and ultras (yellow health enemies) were vulnerable to Solar damage. I assumed that I'd encounter blue and purple health enemies, who would be weak to Arc and Void damage, later in the game, so I kept dismantling all Arc and Void special and Heavy weapons I recieved. I only figured out how elemental damage really worked when I did my first Nightfall and some Burn modifiers were active.
So what are your Kinderguardian stories and misadventures? I'm curious to hear how this community learned the mechanics of Destiny.
Edit: Apparently thinking loot drops were shared and engrams were finder's keepers was a common misconception, and buying Gjallarhorn from Xûr was a poor investment. Lots of funny and outright stupidly novice comments! Keep them coming, there's nothing to be ashamed about.
Edit II: A story about the Loot Cave, as told by a Veteran. Shout out to AcidRohnin for posting this
This is a tale of Ye Old Loot Cave for Guardians who were too young or not born at the time to experience it's magic and wonder. It sadly ended due to an evil known only as Būñgįę, with the Dark Lord, DëëJNùtzzzzzz. Our story begins...
I only heard about it recently; a cave with an overflow of enemies, infinite from what some would say. The cave itself is tiny in size, yet there is an abundance of bullet fodder. Traveling takes some time and the journey is perilous. Captains, Vandals, a wizard, knight and Thralls that could very well number into the 1000s stand in your way; yet it is worth the trek. Also finally realizing that you can run past all of them makes it far easier. Being the first to arrive. Will others come? Perhaps. Only time will tell. Fellow guardians finally begin to show. 1, then 2,3,4, and finally the fifth. You all take your place, eyes fixated down the sights at a black hole that houses an unknown amount of evil.
They appear. Guardians gunning them down before they can even make an exit. It is a tight and small entrance and bottlenecks them. It will be their undoing. After an hour or two, the cave glistening with the soft glow of green and blue lights. All those engrams. Yet in the darkness three yellowish eyes appear. They are coming! Bullets find there marks at the felling of the enemy. All of the sudden as if magic, a new color orb appears, as if out of thin air. It is brighter and some how more radiant than the others, a deep purple that some how glows with an iridescent intensity. Running with a burning desire to get to that cave so as not to lose sight of it. To release it from that dark prison. Deleting other filthy greens or blues to make room. A Legendary Helmet Engram it says. What could it be hiding? Going to orbit and to the tower as quickly as possible, hoping to get the best luck. Walking to Rahool; him smiling, and kindly speaking,
"What do you have for me today guardian?"
"Ohh, do I have something for you! Just wait 'til you see this!"
"Ohh, this looks interesting!" He replies.
I hand it over. Hands shaking. What could it be. A new legendary helm. Maybe it'll be mask of the third man or even Achlyophage Symbiote. Yea that's what it'll be I can feel it.
"Mhmm..." Master Rahool says with intrigue.
He found it I knew it. I knew it! What a guy what a pal. I'm going to buy him a drink after this. He will be my first born son godpare....
"Here you go." He claims with excitement.
"What the F is this shit?"
He looks confused.
"A Sinaa Jaguar 2.1? WTF is this? An uncommon helm I could buy from the vanguard rep. How could you do this to me. Your friend, your pal...."
"Until next time Guardian!" coldly cutting me off just like he cut out my heart. His eyes lifeless. Heart blackened. Soul empty.
He is no friend; he is thine enemy. He is the rat on the inside playing his mind game on us. This is the start of a bitter hatred among enemies. He is my nemesis. I will bath in his blood if the time comes. Watch your back Mister Rahool. Don't let me catch you in a dark alleyway or corner in the tower.
A million deaths are not enough for Master Rahool...!
Edit III: 666 replies. Now how do we summon Satan...shit, no, that's not right...great, now my dick is stuck in the microwave.

When I joined during DB, I seen people with the Nightfall EXP Buff Flaming Head and I was like "why are their heads blue?"

Where are these orbs of light I just generated? Loot and ammo drops being shared. What do I need these raid robes for when I have exotic ones? Super Good Advice is a good choice for the exotic bounty, right? Shooting Vex in the head for a crit only to have a headless dude charging you. Paying attention during cutscenes and attempting to skip them on other characters. Doing the low-level Vanguard strikes while still being under-leveled. Blind Watch and Bastion seemed like the only maps in Pvp bonus. Beta bonus: wandering around Skywatch shooting stuff is kinda fun. Might as well buy this and see the rest.
-
I thought elemental damage did nothing different from kinetic damage.
-
Motes of light and orbs of light were the same thing.
-
In my eyes, I still am. :)
-
Pvp was going to be professional. Nope Bungie said nah nig this is for casuals. We dont care about being mlg we gave 343 that mantle.

1 OdpowiedźJust realized a couple weeks ago that you can swap guns in the tower. Never paid attention, just thought it was the last one in your hand when you went to orbit.
-
Protection from my own grenades. I learned that one quickly...
-
I though the game would just get better and better... man was I wrong
-
When gjallarhorn was in xurs inventory on week 2 and I thought why would I waste coins on a weapon when I could have better armor?
-
VOG had void burn

That goblins didn't have precision spots

1 OdpowiedźEdytowany przez użytkownika ExorcistWaffle: 1/24/2016 6:08:07 PMI joined towards the beginning of tdb, and my misconception was that if I got the dlc, I would immediately level up to 20, but noooo, my stupid fetus brain was wrong And my favorite quote from buying it: Me to the person next to me "oh yeah, I'm probably only going to play this a few minutes a day," I now know what their funny look meant

2 OdpowiedziOther people could get the engrams and ammo I saw

I thought that if you had got all the gold chests in the game you would get a secret weapon, or unlocked a new hidden map. I somehow figured that the glowing yellow bar above your teammate's head was there to indicate that they were injured, and that they were recovering. I thought all elemental damage types had a chance of inflicting their elemental effects on your target. I figured arc could stun, void could lower defenses, and solar could do DoT. I thought that if you had killed a certain number of enemies, you would get a guaranteed engram drop. I also thought exotic engrams could possibly drop, but the chance was like .0001%. Last but not least, am I the only one who thought you could pick up glimmer off the ground? I would just stand there for like 5 minutes just waiting to pick it up. Who thought it was a good idea to show glimmer dropping, but you as the player cannot collect it?
-
Vex critical spot was the head and I thought solar damage would light enemies on fire
-
I thought that I would just play this game for a month or two like most other games....silly kinderguardian. (15-months and counting)
-
3 OdpowiedziI thought that buying a Gjallarhorn in week two would be a waste of strange coins.....I put in a TON of hours and never had it drop. I had to wait until he sold it again right before TTK launched....

1 OdpowiedźI was too scared to do any hive daily heroic missions for 3 months because I thought that they were too creepy for me. I literally once panic supered a single thrall with nova bomb when it snuck up behind me. The hive reminded me way too much of the flood in Halo and of course I don't like doing flood missions for the same reason.
-
6 OdpowiedziI leveld to 25 before attempting level 5 story. I was so scared of t because I spent a month trying to beat level 2. I kept trying to stab the boss in the leg thinking it would do a lot of damage like it did to the dregs. :(
-
2 OdpowiedziAlways used to to race to pick up engrams because i thought they dropped for everyone. Also used to think you needed to pick up the glimmer shards from the dead enemies lol
-
I used to think this game was gonna be the best. My friends didn't even make it to level 25 XD
-
Lets see... Shanks were sharks, hobgoblins were hobogoblins, the fate of all fools, aaaand ogres needed death. Because ugly.
Plz Bungo nurf ogres ugliness itz not right k.
Always waiting to open chests in the VoG until everyone was around because i thought they would despawn for the rest of the team
