Destiny: A loyal fan's constructive criticism

My name's Jeff the cabal. I have been around these forums for quite some time, during the launch of destiny. I have played and have been in love with destiny for the past year. I usually will never hate on this game, and I still won't. This post here isn't to hate, I really want to give back some constructive criticism about the game. I am easily considered by many a big ol desticle. I defend bungie, but to only a certain extent. If something isn't right, I will straight away point it out. Destiny. Let's all admit it, it is slowly dying. (Now again, destiny isn't dead, but it's obvious that the game is slowly dying. Every game is slowly dying, destiny is picking a paste rather more quickly than other games.) There is no way around it, as much as you try to avoid it, you can't hide from it. I personally don't like to believe it is, but let's face it, it really, realistically is. Me as a loyal destiny and bungie fan really don't want to see a game such as destiny go to waste. This game is such a good concept, has such good ideas and thoughts that where put into this game! It would be such a waste if it all went down the drain. The lore for example, though destiny as a game doesn't have much, destiny in whole has an overwhelming amount of lore to it. This is all rich and beautiful lore that is locked up and settled in the grimoire section on the bungie website. Why is this a thing? Beats me. But there must be some reason behind it. Destiny as a game, doesn't have much and rarely does incorporate these bits of lore into the actual story! The vex? The hive? Cabal? Fallen? We know nothing about them, we know some due to expansions, but that's about it! I honestly think that incorporating the lore in actual mainstream story would be a humongous step forward. People crave stories and lores. People crave knowledge of the world around them, and you bungie, you have it! You have it all! It's all in the grimoire and if you where to incorporate it into the story, it would greatly GREATLY improve the game as a whole. When destiny was released, by far the biggest complaint was the horrible lack luster story. It honestly was one of the worst stories I've heard from a video game. (Again, I am usually not one to hate or bash, this is strictly my opinion. Feel free to have a different opinion.) Destiny lost a whole lot of its fanbase because of how boring the story was. There was no hook, there was nothing to get you going. You got revived, you fight the fallen, you woke the hive, you discovered the vex and ran into the cabal. You then fight the "heart" in the black garden and up to this day many people don't even know what the heart was. (Of course some do, thanks to grimoire. But I'm taking about in game wise.) Bungie is at least heading in the right direction, especially with the taken King. Story telling in this dlc really improved. We got to know more about the world around us. The NPCs in the tower are alive now rather than mindless NPCs. They all have characteristics, emotions, feelings, they all are different and they all should be that way. They shouldn't all just be sweeper bots with no emotion whatsoever. Bungie is definitely heading in the right direction with this one, we know the world around us, we know more about our enemies, NPCs play a role, a good hook and interest to the story, the quest introducing more story to the world around us, it is all working. It's great. Keep it up, we as a community really wish to see more of this in the future. Another thing that destiny can improve is the leveling system. Bungie, you admitted it yourself. When vanilla was around, a big portion of the fanbase left after reaching level 20. It is noticeable too, you have said it yourself, we as a community have seen it with you. A big chunk of the fanebase left when light level was introduced. Some left because they didn't know what to do. Others left because they hated how the RNG worked for leveling up, there are numerous causes and reasoning behind people leaving at this time in the game. I believe the leveling system should just be a bit more simpler. The leveling system now is starting to look a whole like the old leveling system, relying on RNG drops from raids and trials. This I believe has taken a big hit on the game too, leveling in this game shouldn't be determined by a computer saying yes or no, it should be based on hard work, effort, and dedication. The house of wolves, you where gate teed etheric light to level up weapons and armor. People worked hard in the prison to get these things, they grinder the prison, the put hard work and dedication to these things to level up, and that's exactly how it should be. When people work hard, they want results. No one is going to work for no reason. There must be an outcome. It's pretty much how economy and human works. People work to get money. No one is going to work just because they can. They want an outcome. If there is no outcome, no one will want to workforce it. In destiny, it's like going to work, and your boss telling you "hey, at the end of the week, you have a 50/50 chance of me paying you. You will go to work with doubt knowing that at the end of this long Grundy hard week, you might just get nothing. Well, that's how the raid loot works now. Bungie, if you think that this "chance" will motivate us to work for it every week, it's not. It might work for now, it might lure people in to grind and grind and grind mindlessly at this gambling simulator, but once this game goes up there in 4-5 years from now and the whole entire community knows your tricks, it's honestly not going to work. Weapon balancing is a given. Especially destiny as an RNG based game, balancing really needs to play a big roll. Bungie is on the right direction of trying to balance these weapons as much as they can slowly, but we all just wish if this can all be done and over with. I know balancing weapons in this game is much more complex and harder than it actually sounds, but once you nail it, it's there for good. Hand cannons, pulse rifles, shotguns, they will all have a use and be good for certain situations. That's how it should be. Pulse rifles shouldn't just rule all the ranges and situations, hand cannons shouldn't rule all situations, no weapons should. I would like to hear myself say before every crucible map "hey, I'm going to us ____ because I think this will fit ____ map better" more often. This adds so much more verity to the game, which is another big complaints of destiny. Bungie is heading in the right direction, but it will take some time. Slowly but surely. The grinding. I love MMOs and all games related. Destiny although may not be an MMO, it has strikingly similar features to it. There is a huge debate in the community about it, and I can see why. It's not an MMO but it does have striking resemblance to one. It's like a dog dressed in a rabbit costume. Is a rabbit? No, but does it have 2 long ears? Yes. Does it have whiskers? Yes. Does it look like a rabbit? Yes. MMOs and RPG games tend to be based off of grinding. Grinding is a huge aspect of the game, often time this grinding will lead you forward to something in the game. This grinding is suppose to be loved, is suppose to be enjoyable and should simply be tied closer to the game itself. Some examples that Bungie ailed was the sword bounty where you need 25 kills in the crucible with a sword. This is a small example of good grinding. This type of grinding gets players to play the game, and to enjoy themselves while doing it. It leads people to play crucible, and explore different aspects of the game some people don't normally visit. This is fine, it's perfect. But grinding like finding 100-150 planet materials? Really? This is simply unnecessary. There is no reason why someone should have to do something like this, there is no reason why a person has to spend hours upon hours of sitting on patrol, waiting for planet material to spawn, grab 3-6 natural and sit there again waiting. There is no reason for it, this is an example of bad grinding. Micro-transaction. I am pro micro-transaction, HOWEVER, for cosmetics items and things of that sort. Micro transaction as a whole is looked down upon by the gaming community, and especially in a game like destiny, it is very looked down upon. However, some games do it right. And so far, destiny is on the right track. Like I said previously MMOs have a huge grinding aspect to the game, and there shouldn't be an easy pass by that to victory. There shouldn't be a way to "skip" the grinding. Micro-transaction should simply stay emotes, maybe shaders, ships and sparrows, even emblems. (I believe that ghost shells and class items shouldn't have light. They are alone cosmetic items and players shouldn't be be force to use something like a cloak they don't like because it brings their level higher.) if ghost and class items for their light removed, I would then suggest ghosts and class items should be sold by Tess. But you Bungie as a company NEEDS to promise this, because although some might not worry, some people are skeptical. You need to be straight forward and say that this will stay cosmetic only. Again, this is my constructive criticism. I still love this game, I still play this game daily. I am a huge fan of you Bungie and a huge fan of this franchise. I am giving some feedback back to get destiny more recognized, to maybe help fix this game up a bit. I am here to try to help voice my ideas, and voice the communities ideas. Thank you for reading my post. Please let me know your thoughts and opinions. -Jeff the cabal <3

  • I agree with every point you made. I tend to stay quiet on the forums, and I'm typically not one to complain about lack of content, solely due to only being able to play 2-3 days a week (wife, kids, work...). However, I've begun to seen a disturbing trend among the portion of the player base that DOES tend to be able to play Destiny daily...an issue that this segment of players should never experience...lack of rewards matching that of the activity completed and the effort put forth. I've completed both the normal and hard mode raids, and I would describe my rewards as decent (311 on a single toon). Having not put forward an outlandish amount of time, I'm content with this for today. However, when you have faithful Destiny players that commit themselves to achieving as much as they can in this game by spending time daily to complete events, they NEED to be rewarded. Two friends from my normal raid group have completed both raid modes on ALL THREE of their characters. One of their hunters managed to break 313 and the other guy has a Titan at 314...after each spending roughly FIVE TIMES LONGER THAN MYSELF. That is unsatisfactory, and frankly unacceptable. One of them is playing BO3 today and the other said he's picking up Fallout. Both said they may not be back. I don't blame them.

My take on it is they are still trying to deal with the fallout (not 4) from deciding to hack the game up a few months before release. That was a colossal error.

  • Thing is, Bungie are a money grabbing ass company. I really enjoy destiny. But these guys have always been about the money. Dedicated fans make money, but not as much as new players who buy the packages, consoles and cosmetic crap. A Year 1 player spent $60 on destiny, $40 for both expansions, $40 on TTK and maybe $20 on silver. That cash has been used by now to offset operational costs and fund payroll. They have to bring in new players because people will come and go. So they cater to new players which puts the game off balance for Y1 dedicated fanboys (me and you). I get it and it can't be an easy thing to do. Sometimes I play and think 'why the hell would they have even done X?' But there's so much going on with this game that there are going to be oversights. A few things (some you've mentioned) stand out to me as opportunities: - HM Loot drops.... Do I really need to go there? Ok. Last night I get a 314 HMG from Warpriest and then the same 311 HMG from Oryx. W. T. F. - The narrative still needs work. For example 'Eris, why does Oryx have a prison?' Every time I hear that I die a little inside. Not. Good. Find a way to integrate story without baby talk. - Eververse was perfectly fine with me. That is until they sold Halloween rng. Man that's ridiculous. I can't believe anyone actually bought that. I mean if you have the money, ok. But that reminds me just how greedy these guys really are. Just praying on people's wallets. But I guess if that funds my favorite game for a while. Ok. - TTK. Unfortunately TTK was again misadvertised and blown up from a marketing standpoint to be this awesome 'game' and it wasn't. I enjoyed and continue to enjoy TTK. But it's not a game. It's a re use of everything already in the game. With another patrol area. Kinda makes me wonder if it's just too difficult to create worlds with the Dev tools so they are forced to re skin stuff with new abilities to meet deadlines.

      • Been playing since the beta on 360. I've put almost a thousand hours on this game. Year one had its ups and downs but as a whole I enjoyed it. I want this game to thrive but my interest fell off about a month after taken king. I'm on XBONE and smite is just so good. Now that fallout and blops and halo are out I find harder and harder to try and play. I want destiny to succeed but I've watched the community go through the roof when we had 20 million people playing. But that number dropped heavily to about 3-4 million until tkk came out. Then it jumped to about 6-7 mil, and I feel now it's dropping heavily again this time. All these numbers are just rough estimates. I want this game to be successful for the next 10 years but they must truly try to listen to the community more, and redefine themselves once more. TTK was a big step in the right direction but now they have reset to bar for themselves. And the bar is now very high. As long as they keep progressing with dlcs like this one and keep fixing their mistakes this game shall endure. My own opinion is that they shouldn't do anymore DLC for this game, and just work on destiny 2. They have and entire year to do that and make it amazing and pull back the people they've lost. Destiny has been a fun ride and it's not over yet. I just hope bungie listens to the community and really pays attention to posts like this.

      • I haven't played since Monday. Last Monday. This game is always the same, so I left for fallout. With the massive size of fallout, I'll Wait until December and get just cause, where number 2 was one of my favorite games. Those two combined will have huge replaying time since they are so big and fun to mess around with, and by that time in maybe March I may hop on once or twice. But come june I'm never coming back because it's no mans sky baby

      • Bungie is to blame... This game was not thought thru correctly. Maybe perhaps its the reason to a lot of things that are broken so they'll have an excuse to constantly not move forward, but instead leave eveyone strung for "now" until they find a better solution.

      • Destiny is not dying. Just because you can not find reasons to play hours every day for months on end does not mean it is dying. We have quelled the current threat (Oryx) and we are recovering before the next one presents itself. Seriously, give the Darkness some time to regroup, they will be back.

        • That was a nice read. We all have opinions, being a beta tester player, (and if you don't believe me. I have the emblem to prove it) I've been playing since day one...with a break, after reaching level 20 and not having anyone to game with and didn't understand the whole point of this game and really the whole point of why it's "fun" had alluded me so I quit. I tried again for TDB liked it. Didn't love it. Then...quit again. Then HOW...this time I didn't quit. I got it. The point sunk in. And I realized. How amazing this game was. Then TTK and saw a vision of where this game can go. For instance. World of Warcraft during vanilla was plagued with issues plus at that time in gaming no one wanted to pay money each month for a video game. It wasn't happening yet. People complained constantly. But kept playing... Sure we lost some but by the time the Litch King came out. world of Warcraft was epic. Refined and amazing....after over a decade that game is starting to die down and games like destiny are taking up the mantle. Yeah it's not polished. And yeah we like "lore" but destiny is many things. From crucible to raiding there is a lot to offer casual gamers and die hards. In fact I think this is a very friendly game for casuals. Whereas world of Warcraft ended up being for only people who dedicated basically their lives to "achieving" greatness in that game. Destiny could be within a few expansions. On the verge of greatness sir... Not death.

          • Ok Jeff why the hell should we ( destiny community and fans err former fans ) have to tell these so called devs how to fix their game. They aren't stupid. They know the game is screwed up but they dont care. They are working on the next dlc, know why? Because everyone has bought TTK already. Its unreal to me how many people beg and whine to bungie about how this multi-billion dollar company should do this and that. How many times have you seen bungie reply on this forum?? They know whats wrong but THEY ARE ROBERT KOTICKS SLAVES. Destiny isnt dying its dead, to me and several other thousands. So keep your fanboy mentality and overlook look how bungie and activision have ripped yours, mine and mommys and daddys wallet a new azzhole. In most of bungies faculty interviews they've told us all basically "eff you you'll buy the games no matter how lazily we make it " So pat bungie on the back and help them along like a decrepit granny while all the while they laugh at you and count our money. Bungie = Meth ladened chimps with college degrees. Its not all bungies fault though. They did sign a deal with the devil.

          • I have invested way too much time to this game and after the stunt bungie pulled with TTK, I'm done. I hate the fact that all the grinding we've done in year 1 is now worthless. I feel like if I wanted to come back to this game a year from now, I wouldn't miss a thing which to me seems like a double edged sword for bungie. Why grind in year 2 when nothing you do will ultimately effect or benefit you in year 3? Bungie should have allowed the players the ability to carry over one weapon and armor into year 2 at the least to reward the player for his/her effort. And why get rid of increased grenade distance/melee attack speed on helmets? The players that will continue to play Destiny when all the content is over will be the pvp players. The only reason we play campaign is to have the best player setup to go into the crucible so why make it so difficult for us to remain competitive in crucible by making us grind all over for new weapons instead of just designing new and better weapons for us to make the change to something new on our own? On one last note, bungie nerfing the Hopscotch Pilgrim even though it became irrelevant for year 2 made no sense and simply crapped on players who grinded week after week of the extremely boring strike playlists for it. I was a long time halo player and began falling out of fps pvp games ever since bungie stopped making halo and was stoked to start playing destiny but after a year of this game, I'm done. Bungie needs to figure things out before I and many other halo-style pvp die hards will want to get back on the bungie bandwagon.

I don't see myself buying the next expansion unless someone tells me of something fun that is in it. Like year one we had Fatebringer and Gally and Icrebreaker and Lord of Wolves. There are many more as well but the point is there were multiple fun weapons in year 1 the weapons in year 2 don't appear to be of the some caliber.

              • Good post. Level 40 was a joke. I had post master packages and bounties sitting waiting to level up. Didn't think I would reach level 40 before I even left the tower to play for the first time, but I did on all three chars. There is only one thing different about the light system from vanilla destiny...it is now more of a grind. Not only is rng responsible for dropping gear, it is also responsible for the light level (perks too, but I'm just talking about light). Too many variables for an rng system to function effectively, giving players a sense of actual progress. I don't mind a grind as long as it is a fun grind with good rewards. To me year 1 was a lot more rewarding and Bungie needs to reexamine a few things about the future of Destiny. Hopefully they take feedback like this into consideration.
