This is how it starts.
"It's just emotes" you say. "Don't complain and don't buy it" you say. "Companies have to make money too" you say.
But if this proves to be successful, it will just get worse. Now it's emotes. Next it's ships and shaders. Then it's engrams. Then it's weapons and armor.
If we let them get away with this, they will try to get away with more. We have to draw a line and say "no further". We have to stamp out microtransactions here and now.
We can't let them get away with this.
I'm up for argument if you disagree with me.
[b]EDIT:[/b] I've read through the update again and saw nothing about free DLC anywhere.
[b]EDIT:[/b] For people using the slippery slope argument: that argument can go either way. They might not ever add any besides cosmetics, but it's better to be safe than sorry. They are more likely to put in more in the future if we respond to this first venture positively.

[b]EDIT:[/b] After reading many replies and having many debates, I can see that It might be okay. As long as they stay just cosmetic, I guess that the desticles will be paying for all of my DLC this year. As long as it stays as cosmetics until the end of the series, I'll be fine.

As long as it stays cosmetic and doesn't go as far as Evolve did, I have no issues. Evolve went way overboard and there wasn't enough game to justify all the extra purchases.

They can charge all they want for emotes and I fully support Bungie selling cosmetic items to players that are willing to purchase them. However, I will not be buying any emotes because they are a product that does not appeal to me. I am more into jumpships, sparrows, and shaders. Now if they go P2W and start selling Focused Light, Sparks of Light, Quest Hints, or Legendary Marks then yeah, playing field is not level and I quit.

5 OdpowiedziSometimes I feel like half this forum wants to have the Bungie employes enslaved and forced to produce content for free. They are a freaking business. Of course they want to make some money out of it. If you don't want to buy an emote or a shader then don't. If you don't like the game, then stop playing it and play something else.

I am not saying it wont happen (i really hope it doesn't) but you are fueling your argument with something that hasn't happened, yet. I really don't give a shit about cosmetic micro-transactions, if something looks cool enough to warrant chucking a couple of quid at it then yeah, sure, ill buy it. But i also have the option, so does everyone else, not to buy it without having my game progress affected in any way shape or form. Rest assured, if they change this model I, along with a lot of other people, will walk away and with some awesome games on the horizon i am sure Bungie & Co are aware of this and are not that stupid, we hope.

Bungie aren't stupid. If they sell weapons and engrams it will utterly infuriate people. I'm done with cosmetic things like emotes and shaders and ships, but if weapons and armour go on sale for real money a lot of people will walk away.

in theory, even if they start to sell engrams or any in-game item, then its still ok. as long as the following do not occur: normal gear acquisition rates lower, or otherwise become harder to get unless the payment option is exercised, OR exclusive gear that offers a unique advantage available nowhere else except for purchasing it. so basically as long as its always COMPLETELY optional for those so inclined to pay, and does not otherwise hurt or hinder non-paying players, besides the usual core expansion or whatever (base DLC is $20, with optional micro-trans for cosmetic or lazy pplz).

27 OdpowiedziHere's an analogy for you: Let's say you opened a restaurant ten years ago. Your signature item is a hamburger that you charge $8 for. Your customers LOVE this burger, they come back for this burger, and they know they can get this great burger for $8. Over the next ten years however, the price of beef has steadily risen. You gradually make a smaller and smaller profit off of your burger to the point where you are about to lose money on it. You don't want to raise the price of your burger because it's known as the best $8 burger around. Sure, some customers will pay $10 for your burger, but a lot won't. So what do you do? You are in business and you have to make money, so you can't afford to lose money on your burger. You could try raising drink prices or expanding your dessert menu. These are supplemental things (in other words, DLC), that customers may not necessarily need but the extra revenue can help make up for the increasing cost of making your $8 burger. That helps for a while, but eventually the price of beef will keep rising and once again you are barely breaking even. If you keep raising drink or dessert prices eventually it will drive customers away from them. You have reached the point where you have to raise the price of your burger to $10 to stay in business. In this analogy, the $8 burger represents the $60 game and the price of beef represents the raising development costs. Developers don't want to raise the price of their metaphorical burger because that could drive away too many gamers, so instead they expanded their dessert menu and offer DLC to make up the difference. If you want more content for your games you're going to have to buy some desserts, or be ready to pay $100 for your game. Pick your poison. Studios are closing left and right because this industry is nearing a collapse. Only the biggest publishers, developers, and IP's can sustain themselves. You know why there are so many sequels to games nowadays, and fewer new franchises? Because a new game failing could mean an entire studio failing. Nobody can afford to take the risk of taking a chance and seeing it fail, so they stick to what works. And if it works, they have to monetize it as much as they can because there is nothing left to fall back on. This is modern gaming.
