So Oryx is one of the Hive's Gods, and a direct vessel of the Darkness. He's raising an army by enslaving other beings from all other races and bending them to his will, all for the purpose of avenging the death of his son, Crota (it was kind of his fault that Crota died anyway, since he ordered him to seize Luna). We, as Guardians and warriors of the Light, must bring down this evil king.
But, what if he's not as evil as we think?
What if he's not enslaving, but instead, he's setting these Taken free?
Oryx has 3 main powers, which he uses on these Taken. First, he pulls them into his inner world -his personal dimension, if you may. Once there, he calms the frantic being, convincing them that his is a place of peace, and that there are no enemies here to kill them.
Phase 2 is Oryx's true power: Truth. Oryx is able to see into the minds of others, to see everything they have ever seen, and everything they fear. He uses this to discover what they fear the most, then moves on to phase 3.
In phase 3, Oryx uses his own power to grant these Taken an ability, which is made to counteract that specific Taken's greatest fear. "I have a knife for you. It is shaped like..."
Take the Vandals, for example. They are barely higher in command than the Dregs. Their responsibility is to follow orders, make sure the Dregs pay their dues, and try to keep their other two arms. At a moment's notice, they could slip up and earn two swift cuts from a Captain's blade -demotion right back to Dreg. They have nothing to call their own. Nothing is safe, nowehere is safe for them. So, Oryx gives them a place where they can finally call their own -where they can finally feel safe. Because of his power, they are able to make a shield of their own, and inside of this shield, is their home and their own space.
The Psions fear their own scarcity the most. The Cabal underestimate their power, usefulness, and genius, and use them as cannon fodder. There are so few Psions in the universe, yet the Cabal round them up and send them to the front lines. So, Oryx gives them a gift which allows them to multiply rapidly, so that the Psions needn't fear extinction anymore. They are never alone.
Oryx isn't bending these beings to his will, they are willingly turning to him. He brings them to his sanctuary, offers them a gift to render their greatest fears obsolete, and in exchange, only asks for their service. Although he is the King of Taking, he is also the King of Giving.
So, what is it that makes this Hive diety truly evil?
Edit: my main point behind this post is to show how genius Oryx really is. Yeah, he's evil as all hell; but, he also performs benevolent actions for his "people" as a king should. While his ultimate goal is domination of all life, his other goal is to make his kingdom a utopia for those under his command. Thats why, even though you see Fallen and Hive ripping each other apart on the Moon, or Vex and Cabal massacring each other on Mars, not a single Taken falls to infighting.
In feudal society, kings and kingdoms warred constantly for domination. However, the most successful of kings knew how to be fierce on the battlefield, but benevolent to their subjects.
Who's to say that Oryx is any better or worse than the Traveller? While the Traveller is the cause of our uplifting to the Golden Age, is it not also the one who brought hell and oblivion to our front door? Both sides seem to have a point and a foil to their views -we're merely caught in the crossfire.

Are you SURE the things that return are the things that were taken?
-
Buzz off, Oryx we know it's you.
-
1 OdpowiedźWhat happened to the other races Oryx took? He's taken 100s of worlds but we only see the 4 races. You could argue he let them go but I doubt it, if only because of that one line in the cutscene. "We have captured their leaders, the rest await execution." "No. I will take them all." It sounds to me he kills anything no longer useful to him. Yeah he's helping them now but only because it suits his needs.

3 OdpowiedziBenevolent? What? He threw his son INTO TIME because he was misbehaving

It''s the same modus operandi of the "gods" of Chaos. They will tempt you with powers and strength beyond your dreams. Once you are theirs, only then do you know the folly of your actions.

4 OdpowiedziGeonocidal maniac? Check. Belief in race superiority? Check. Sad background of being misunderstood and downtrodden? Check. Sound familiar? I'll give you a hint, rhymes with Witler.

Edytowany przez użytkownika Manuelomar: 9/30/2015 2:23:14 AMWell, Oryx basically *says* that he's evil, and that evil is beautiful. He says that war is beauty and peace is an abomination, that perfection is to kill and destroy and murder forever until you kill even Death itself and exist eternally. He repeatedly call the things of The Sky/Traveler/Light an abomination, and then lists those things like morality, codes of conduct, fairness, justice. He says "giving is a thing of the Sky, not the Deep. I must Take." So yeah, *Oryx himself* says that he's worse than the Traveler. He pretty much makes the Traveler out to be literally Jesus every time he describes it. He describes every civilization that the Traveler has helped (and that he proceeds to murder, slaughter, torture to death, and dance on the grave of) as being these incredibly advanced and sophisticated civilizations of high culture and advanced technology and peace. And then goes on about how aweful that stuff is and how he wants to kill, smash, and destroy everything. There is no room for interpretation here. Oryx is evil and wants to make sure you understand that he is. There's no "who's to say" here. Nice example of the Golden Mean fallacy, though. You pretty much perfectly illustrated why it's a fallacy.

7 OdpowiedziTheir titles are "tortured" , "consumed" and they are always twitching and spazzing out. They don't look free and empowered :-/

1 OdpowiedźBut then why are the taken bending and spazing out while the fight like they're under going some great torment.

12 OdpowiedziEdytowany przez użytkownika SumFish: 9/30/2015 5:13:08 AMI like your opinion don't get me wrong, but what I've taken (see what I did there) from the book of Sorrows is his own personal drive to survive by feeding his worm has led the Hive to do much more than simple "take" and enslave entire species. The hive have been around for millions of years, and in that time have slaughtered, and destroyed thousands of species, planets and moons purely to grow their own strength and survive, it was actually a long while until Oryx had the ability to Take. Not to mention when something is pulled into his dimension and taken they have their wills bent and remain nothing but a hollow shell under Oryx's control, purely using them as instruments to craft in his eyes "the perfect universe" by literally killing, destroying and taking every single other species in the universe in order to eliminate any possible conflict or resistance. And let's not forget, if the hive aren't killing they are dying as they need to pay tribute, even if Oryx is sourcing tribute from the lesser hive in his little pyramid scheme I don't see how wiping out every known species in the universe is justified. In regards to the traveller I see what you mean about getting us caught in the crossfire. I think the traveller is simply trying to survive by finding a civilization powerful enough to fight back, not just against the hive but against the Darkness itself, which has a big part in Oryx' rise to power. I feel the worms are instruments of the darkness, considering Oryx and his sisters weren't originally evil until these little bastards came along.
-
2 OdpowiedziThe traveller wants to help us. And he has. The darkness (and Oryx) wants to kill us. Thus, Oryx = bad Traveller = good
-
53 OdpowiedziWell, the traveler saved and protected multiple species, Auryx destroyed them. Go read the grimoire for calcified fragments, it's under the book of sorrows.
-
Read the grimoire on each taken enemy. He makes it sound like salvation, they sound like they offer a better life. So do cults TL;DR Oryx might be a magical cult leader
-
13 OdpowiedziBitch he places them into the Void before they go crazy , lose their will to him and he pulls them back out and uses them for his army. Oryx is the purest dark being we have encountered so far
-
4 OdpowiedziWell if you read the calcified fragments Oryx is ruthless through his symbiotic worm/wyrm. But he has slain trillions and wiped out dozens of species all to feed his worm so it didnt kill him/her. All we know of the traveler is that it advances societies so they can defend it and themselves from the minions of the Deep or darkness. The traveler may not be all good but oryx is bad.
-
Except for the fact that he tortures all of them and basically brainwashes them, bending them to his will, ripping every ounce of free will out of their souls.
-
5 OdpowiedziLol I don't think he's setting them free lol Theiyre called "taken" for a reason HE TAKES THEM LOl It's notike they die early n go to heaven n oryx is Jesus lol that part didn't make sense
-
1 OdpowiedźOryx is bound by his worm to conquer beings, so he doesn't do this out of benevolence. Also, the Deep gives Taken their power, and we know the Darkness and Ahamkara grant wishes. My guess is that there is a steep price for this, like having your will erased.
-
Edytowany przez użytkownika Rising Sol: 9/29/2015 4:31:21 PMThat's super badass if that's all accurate. The reason he is bad cus he wants us dead yo. Period. He doesn't want to take us. He wants to crush us and earth with it. Edit: He wanted to crush us**** lol see what I did there?
-
3 OdpowiedziYou can't blame The Traveler for wanting to leave. The Hive 'hunger for your light' and The Traveler IS light, purest and original form and The Hive and their worms want to consume the light... They want to consume The Traveler! If a Shark is coming to eat you what do you do? You flee! Traveler is doing the same. Well, wanted/wants too.

8 OdpowiedziEdytowany przez użytkownika Zoop: 9/29/2015 4:04:57 PMHis objective is hardly domination of all life, rather its extinction as a tribute to his worm. Thats just f-ed up. Read book of sorrows, the logic the hive follow is far from benevolent.
-
5 Odpowiedzifrom reading all the calcified fragments or most of them anyway i get that if there is a race that is truly evil it is the hive, its all about death and war with them. they have to kill huge numbers to survive.
-
2 OdpowiedziEdytowany przez użytkownika PDS Caboose: 9/29/2015 3:51:21 PMAfter reading the books of sorrow, the traveller's position is pretty clear: create life and make civilizations flourish. For what purpose, that is still a mystery. The Hive: eradicate all life in the universe because life and civilization are the wrong shapes. The only right shape, proclaimed by the darkness in the deep, which speaks to the worms, the gods of the hive, is death because fighting the entropy of the universe is fatal. Be ruthless or be extinct. So unless you take the darkness's perspective and not the human perspective, the traveller is good and oryx is the apocalypse manifest. The traveler doesn't intentionally bring destruction, the hive have hunted it for 100,000+ years trying to kill it to achieve the philosophy of the deep.
-
1 OdpowiedźAs the saying goes it is the one who wins the war the shapes history. If we lose we will be painted as the evil ones, but if we win will we continue to say oryx is evil, but I'm sure oryx didn't think he was evil through out this whole thing.

2 OdpowiedziThe grimoire answers all of your questions.
