At the moment the Vex are held back by their one crippling weakness, paracausality. It is a weakness the Hive do not possess. Though we’ve already seen Quria repurpose Tribute to simulate paracausality and the Sol Divisive in this season wielded Ahamkara Bones in an attempt to secure live specimens. If they manage to get a means of simulating paracausality back to the wider Collective such as perhaps scavenging the Black Fleet, we’d be in dire straits.

  • And what about simulating Paracausality. I know the very nature of something being Paracausal means it’s borderline impossible to simulate, but as was seen with Quiria, if the power set has a definitive rule, the vex are able to exploit that. The nature of Darkness and Light both have a couple common rules, such as the Physical vs the Mind. Creativity vs Simplicity.

  • That’s what retconning does. The Vex were the converted remains of conquered civilizations in the OG, that was retconned and they needed a whole new backstory while they were retconning the main story. Not easy to do that, hence why CoO had no detail in it. Empty threat, empty solution. The evil Maya clone they used could be a new direction. Artificial personalities for the Vex to use to harness power? Put one in a Minotaur and maybe it can use Darkness?

  • That’s not a weakness though, just a lack of trying on the writers part. I think after CoO Bungie were reluctant to try a Vex focused story again, which is why every inclusion since has been with them playing second fiddle to some other force. Whether it’s the Pyramids/Witness, Savathûn or even Asher Mir in the case of Avalon. The Vex as an enemy as they stand now are impossible to take a character approach to, with no central antagonist to sculpt them around. And with their history this has largely been the approach Bungie have taken with all the factions. Oryx, Savathûn and Xivu for the Hive. Ghaul, Calus and Caiatl for the Cabal. Skolas, Variks, Aksis, Eramis, Mithrax and even Eido for the Fallen/Eliksni. It’s also why the Taken haven’t really felt the same since Taken King or even Splicer. In their initial appearance they heralded the attention of Oryx, communicating his far reach over the system. Since D2 Launch they marked the schemes of Savathûn. Once Quria was killed they failed to properly establish them as an arm of the Witness narratively, instead they’re just another troop Xivu ends up in control of. Scorn as mindless are only characterised through Fikrul, though Bungie seem to be trying to pick up on the crumbs in Lost with Warlord’s Ruin showing them establishing their own cultures, figuring out what they are. The Vex have never been had any evolution in game due to their singular nature, but I do hope they try in Echoes.
