Commendations should be untethered from Guardian Ranks. Good idea.
Commendations should dictate the color of your guardian rank. Good idea.
Commendations should not be given out automatically. I don't like this. If you were selfish or a jerk, nothing for you. Let's keep them all manual.
To add to your post. Let us give out commendations within the "last played match" tab in cases where the post game commendation screen does not load.

Thing is the current system goal is to showcase which activities you partecipate to the most, so in that context automated commendations do make sense. If the system's goal were to reward player conduct instead, then it would make sense to not automate the system. Also adding a bit more friction to hand commendations out (like hide it a bit so that only people interested in the system engage with it) and the ability to commend any time anywhere would really be beneficial.

Ok but that’s the issue no one is paying attention to who is a “jerk” or not. It’s not that serious for 99% of people playing destiny. No one’s paying attention to their teammates.

I think they should not be tied to those rewards. Will people still give out commendations at random after all that. Sure. You can't really control what other people do, but I think it will lead to a more balanced and accurate system than the one we have now.

Yes, if you want to just play casually with no mic or chat, then you won't really engage with the system and nothing will change for you. But if you do get positive scores, then you will end up playing/recognizing other positive players, which makes the experience for people that care much better.
