Is the witness the darkness or is it an emissary
This question also goes to the traveler are both the witness and traveler emissaries of the winnower and the gardener.

The Witness is not the Darkness. It is merely someone or something using it as a tool for its own agenda. Same logic for the Gardener and Light. Light and Dark are ultimately just paracausal tools; they have their own ways of obtaining them as per their rules in the Flower Game, but they are otherwise neutral powers unless acted upon by someone or something that can utilize them. I like to compare it to nuclear energy (whether or not it's a good enough comparison). Extremely powerful natural force that can cause either a lot of good (mass power generation and radiation therapy) or a lot of harm (nuclear weaponry and radiation poisoning) all by how you use it. The power itself shouldn't be seen in just black of white, but you could certainly make a case for the people that (mis)use it.

1 ReplyThink of it this way. The Darkness is FIRE. Its a Force of Nature that has no morality associated with it. I can be used to build things (like shaping metals), or it can be used to destroy things. The Witness is someone who has chosen to use Fire in the name of total destruction of anything and everything that is not like himself. Now you've moved away from an amoral Force of Nature....to an IMMORAL actor. The Witness is Evil While the members of our Alliance are trying to wield these forces of Nature (Light and Dark) in a constructive way and to promote harmony. What most people consider to be "Good". That's what Lord Saladi was referring to when he answered Crow's question about how he dealt with the Traveler giving the Light to both good and bad people. He said, [i]"I realized it was the wrong question. Good and Evil are rooted in causality." [/i] IOW, the conflict between Light and Dark is one that is not defined by Good or Evil....they are forces of nature trying to find some sort of harmony. The conflict between the Vanguard and The Witness IS one that is shaping up to be between Good and Evil.

The light is energy, even production of energy, also, in loose terms, life. Darkness is entropy, also associated to death. The witness wants neither, which is very interesting. It'l reminds me of the game of life (even the gardener and winnower version), where pattern was developed. It also reminds me of the vex, they seek both. Though I think ALL of this is a processing thought (vex are steps in understanding the thought, and it's definitions)... The witness is...the being that peered into the game, saw the pattern, and is going to explain why life and death are trivial...I also wouldn't call it the witness...or IT, since I used that.

Neither. The light and darkness are neutral (but counter forces) as such they don't need emissaries. The Witness is just a being that stumbled across the darkness and learned how to use it's power. I suspect he was a creature in the black garden and Witness the light and dark and learned how to use the darkness powers once the light left the garden.

Think of the Witness as a dark Zavala, of sorts. He doesn't represent the wishes of the darkness, but rather pursues his own agenda and uses the darkness as a tool.

According to the story he isn't the darkness.....just one that wears it like a glove.

15 RepliesThe Witness is not the Winnower. The Gardner is [i]inside[/i] the Traveler. The Traveler is nothing more then a ship that houses a wounded Gardner. Consider it part ship and part ICU.

3 RepliesThe Winnower is neutral in the game of life. Just like the Darkness. The Witness is using that power for pure evil. The Traveler/The Gardener are the same thing, as indicated by all the lore we have so far. I’d like to think the Gardener is some different supreme being, but all lore indicates it and the Traveler are one in the same.
