Books without happy endings?
My lady friend enjoys reading books.
However, she wants to read a book that doesn't end happily like 99% of all stories seemingly do.
If you know of a good book that doesn't end happily, could you please let me know?
She enjoys [i]Fantasy[/i] and [i]"Teen Fiction"[/i].
Here are the books she likes:

Really? I can hardly find a single decent book with a happy end - though that might have more to do with my definition of "decent book" than the number of books which don't end in utter misery. Not sure of this'll fill the genre expectations, but One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is cripplingly sad once you've worked out what the ending means. It's also one of the best written pieces of prose I've ever had the pleasure of reading - wholeheartedly recommended to anyone. More "in genre" - I have almost no idea what "Teen Fiction" is, so I can't be of much use there. As for Fantasy, the genre is rife with happy ends - they're fairly staple. Maybe Lovecraft, Kafka, or Edgar Allan Poe could be something to look into? Their works [i]might[/i] fall under a [i]broad[/i] definition of Fantasy, whilst also being harrowing enough to avoid happy ends.

If she liked Eragon, have her read the whole series. Paolini likes his damn Pyrrhic victories for everything, especially at the ends of the books, and [i]especially[/i] at the end of Inheritance. Damn that ending. If she's already read them and you just put "Eragon" to simplify it, I'm sure I could be pressed to come up with others.

Tell her to read the Wool series by Hugh Howey because I think if she liked those other books she'd like those because theyre grrreeeaaatttt (even better than frosted flakes) but it doesn't really not have a happy ending, but it is pretty dark. IIRC Didn't you make a thread about books for your gf a long time ago? I recommended the same book in that thread if so. Its great.

While I haven't read the book The Dog of Flanders is "sad" all around. Nothing good happens in that. In fact It has such a lack of any sort of positivity I would even call it poorly made
