You show your patriotism with your actions, not by pointless rhetoric.

I didn't know jack shit about what I was saying or why I had my hand on my chest until I graduated high school. I'm patriotic, but I'm sure that many kids just do it as a habit and aren't really saying it because they mean it. They're just doing it so they won't get yelled at by their teachers, or something.

Well that's where you and I differ to a substantial magnitude. I am extremely patriotic and I knew from a relatively early age what the pledge meant. I mean every single word of it when I recite it. The American flag means a lot more to me that most people. Every time I see that flag, I see all of the millions of people who have died underneath that flag, all of the people whose last breath of life was a testament to the principles on which this country was founded. I see the countless visions of people in their last minutes, looking at that flag and knowing that their death was not in vain. It disgusts me when people disregard their patriotism as I see it as an extremely arrogant and selfish attitude. The pledge is simply a verbal expression of my gratitude towards those who have died for me, past, present and future.
