I'm guessing you're not talking about parliamentary debate. And they're definitely not Socrates. In brief exchanges, 9/10 times, if you make them giggle, you've just won. So do it with a smirk. Do it like you're amused and satisfied. Either that, or subtly mock them by agreeing with them to a ridiculous degree. Example: Vapid Pop-Culture Girl: "I just think that gay marriage is, like, a fundamental, like, constitutional right. You know?" You: "Completely. In fact, it's way better than straight marriage. If it were up to me, society wouldn't even have straight marriage." Act with confidence and don't give too much of a crap what they think. It'll backfire sometimes. But it beats the hell out of nodding your head along like some sycophant. If you don't want to risk this, then just furrow your brow and stroke your chin while they blather. Throw in a few "hmmm"s and change the subject when you can. That, too, beats submission.
