So I was browsing the iterwebs, as usual, when I come upon this thread at 343. Holy high hell, mother of god. I don't think I have ever seen a bigger complaint thread. They usually get locked before they can hit 3 pages, oh but not this one. It would appear that people are pissed at something, but I'm not sure what exactly. What do you guys think about this whole "Handicapped" Halo mess? Edit: What exactly did Recon change?

    From the 343I Forums:
We will look into reopening this thread later once people have had a chance to settle a bit and formulate new thoughts. This is NOT an invitation to start new threads on the issue so please do not do so, those will be locked as well.
Lets read between the lines a bit, just based on past 343 experiences with the issue of criticism.
We will look into reopening this thread later once people have had a chance to settle a bit and formulate new thoughts.
"We've locked this thread and will reopen it later when you little people can do more than bitch at us, because quite frankly we can't take any more criticism over us finally telling the truth. As a matter of fact, we're probably going to go ahead and just delete this whole thread so that we don't have to deal with any criticism, and so that it looks like all of our fans are happy all of the time regardless of what we do that butchers this franchise even more."
This is NOT an invitation to start new threads on the issue so please do not do so, those will be locked as well.
"We will lock any more threads with bitching in them. Unless you are blowing sunshine up our collective asses, we really don't want to hear it. Actually, we really don't want to hear from you even if you love us, just keep buying the shiny pieces of shit we keep churning out so that it looks like we know what we're doing. But really, our delicate sensibilities just can't take any more proof that we have screwed over the only reason Microsoft has to keep us around." Sincerely, BS Angel

          • I'm not amazed by that. People we're getting pissed off cause of what 343i is doing with Halo month after the game was released. Game back then was around 100k, but amount of players was going down quick and people were saying that game is getting boring, they don't feel rewarded etc. To me Halo as multiplayer died - sad but that's true. I'm not playing on my Xbox at all, but still remember nights with ODST campaign, Halo 2 and 3 multiplayer days (playing H2 on XBC from time to time) and all the stuff that was making my blood boil. Halo multiplayer was full of emotions back in the day. Why would you want to win a match now? Only K/D counts and it's more than easy mode to have 2.0 in H4. Lore of Halo is still strong, but it's getting revealed to us more and more through books/comics/etc. I'm not saying it's wrong, but since I was a kid I loved to pick up the pieces and let my imagination fill the gaps. Now I'm 28 almost and I still want that. Sure, I love Forerunner Saga (it's a very emotional trilogy to me) but I don't feel excitement anymore. I really do hope Destiny will give me the goosebumps like Halo back in the days. Now I would like share with you all these two words - move on. Be brave cause soon you'll face your destiny.

It's so sad to see Halo go out like this... Halo would have been so much better off without Halo: Reach and this Reclaimer Trilogy bullshit. I'll remember Halo as it was back in the glory days of Halo: Combat Evolved - Halo 3: ODST, when Halo was the game to play and the reason to own an Xbox. Back when it was extremely popular. R.I.P.

              •
What exactly did Recon change?
In Halo 3, Recon was for the extremists who did the incredible, a badge of honor, but most importantly, a title. The Vidmaster Title. 343 threw it out the window and into a blazing bonfire, along with every other similar aspect of Halo, because 343 doesn't like challenges, or uniqueness, or... fun.

What I wrote on their forums, hope it isn't too offensive for the moderators at Waypoint:
I think Halo is getting closer to its timely death. I loved the original trilogy because it was a labor of love. Now this "Reclaimer" trilogy is a labor of money, trying to squeeze every bit of money they can from the franchise that has already had its time. The failure of a student is also the failure of a teacher. I'm talking to YOU Microsoft. You only have 2 franchises to your name, and already one of them is going down. It won't be long until Gears fails as well. I don't blindly hate 343i just because they "screwed up Halo", I am disappointed at their negative type interaction with the community and their overall purpose for doing Halo. That's all I have to say, I hope this thread doesn't get locked again because I feel that 343i needs to see this. The GDC panel was the last straw, now the storm is here. I bid a farewell to Halo's glory days, and I look forward to Bungie's Destiny.
• Halo 4 does not allow good dumb fun. Reach at least allowed me and my friends to still have good dumb fun while playing to win, especially on the FW maps. Or when, in Living Dead, you could teamkill your teammates with out any penalty and without them being zombies. It was funny to teamkill friends.

What drives me absolutely crazy about this Halo 4 debacle is that 343 actually REMOVED quintessential aspects from the game that, in my opinion, made Halo, Halo. I've voiced my opinion numerous times about the path Bungie started to take Halo down with Reach, but never did I have to berate them for removing so many things from Halo. When a developer has a game with such pedigree as Halo does, with a blank check from their publisher, and almost unlimited resources to create the next game in such a storied franchise - how on Earth do you take the game BACKWARDS??! It's mind-boggling to me that they could -blam!- this up so badly. To me, it just speaks about the abilities of those in charge. Obviously the people "in the trenches" creating the game did a wonderful job. At face value, Halo 4 is an amazing game. But once you play it and delve into what constitutes its gameplay and content, you find a stripped down, broken, and altered "Halo" experience. It's just sad to see such a huge failure with something that should have been so damn easy to hit out of the park. Being a Halo fan from the very beginning and staying actively involved in the Halo community (especially when it comes to listening) I guarantee that I could have developed a better multiplayer experience for Halo 4. I'm confident to say that there are many others in this community that could have done the same. I had high hopes for 343, especially with Frankie in the mix, but it seems clear that those in charge are just completely deluded and honestly believe they are taking the Halo franchise forward, or they just don't know what the -blam!- they're doing. I'm leaning toward believing it's both those things.

                    • This isn't 343's fault, the complaining. Those troglodytes were once a part of the Halo community and were just as vocal towards Bungie's games. Halo 3 was getting ripped into for the longest time. I remember when Guardian was actually a hated map. I even called how people would be whining about Halo 4 and looking back on Reach with rosy glasses (in hindsight, Reach's Custom Games and Forge were REALLY GOOD). 343 did an admirable job with Halo 4. I've got my grievances (better Custom Games features, power weapons are too powerful, DMR is ridiculous, story wasn't explained well, etc), but I still enjoy it. I actually like Spartan Ops. Still, this is the internet. A mountain of tears and rage will be made out of the smallest pimple of a molehill.

                      • After I saw all the gaps in campaign, the 'just-cos' changes, the unfinished segments and the missing matchmaking playlists, I considered not getting Halo 5. After seeing this and knowing 343i's attitude, I'm convinced I need to get a PS4 instead of the next Xbox.

                      • I'd just like to say I'm still displeased with how they showed off the Prometheans at E3 and then treated them like a big reveal in the actual game. I would have LOVED a big reveal in the game. Nope. 343 spoiled it for me. I don't feel like ripping into Halo 4 any more tonight. 343 needs to get their shit together. Yes, this is their first Halo but did it have to suck so bad? No. Oh well, we'll see if Halo 5 is worth the trouble. In the meantime, I finally finished Assassin's Creed III. Now there's an example of a game series gone wrong. I can still have fun with Halo 4. AC III is just frustrating and disappointing.

Josh Holmes has addressed the issue more formally in the latest Halo Bulletin. It's worth a read:
The goal of my presentation was to discuss the many challenges that we faced when building a new team and taking on such a massive and high profile project, specifically for an audience of developers and creators going through similar situations. In preparing my talk, I was trying to encapsulate three years of development into a 45-minute presentation. One of the things that I talked about was the desire to make Halo more accessible to players of all skill levels. What I did a poor job of articulating because of the nature of the intended audience is the importance of balancing the needs and desires of a hardcore Halo population that was born, bred and breathes prior Multiplayer philosophies, with an approachable and open-to-all design style. It’s been a delicate balance and one that we haven’t necessarily succeeded with but continue to work on. CSR, our partnership with top competitive players to build and refine Team Throwdown, adding pro options and arena-style maps to select playlists and our upcoming sandbox balances are a few of the things that we are working on for that particular part of our community on this title. Since my GDC talk, I’ve received a ton of feedback from the competitive community. I want you to know that we hear you, we value you and we are going to continue to listen to your feedback and suggestions. We won’t be able to implement all of them; it’s just not possible with the given resources and time. But we are in this for the long haul, and you’ll see our continued commitment to this aspect of our experience reflected in future projects as well as in our sustain efforts for Halo 4. /Josh
What I really care about are these statements.
"We wanted to help new players find success, help them get power weapons in ordnance that they might never have gotten a hold of before" "We want to make Halo more accessible and easier to succeed at"
That is why I dislike the Halo Multiplayer experience now. If you aren't good at the game you shouldn't be coddled and spoon fed power weapons so that you can have an advantage over people with a higher skill level. Making a game easier to succeed at does not make it more fun. On the contrary it removes that sense of accomplishment you got for achieving something that is difficult.

                      • I have barely played Halo 4 in months. I actually prefer Call of Duty over it now for God's sake. It is just too easy of a game. I absolutely loved the Halo series, and it greatly pains me to see it to go downhill like that. It doesn't matter though since Destiny will be on top soon enough.

                      • Eh, at first I thought that Halo 4 was a pretty awesome and streamlined experience, but I realized a bit later how even more polarizing it was of a change than Reach was to Halo 3. imo, the armor abilities are still, for the most part, pretty useless (with stuff like Active Camo sniping netting you one kill before everyone with a brain murders you) and the balancing on the new "perks" being pretty bad (For instance, I do not know why you would ever NOT pick Dexterity for faster reloading. What beats that?). The ordinance drops were a good idea in theory, but in practice they're absolutely wretched, with things like three Incineration Cannons and two Beam Rifles per team going on in Big Team Infinity. It's atrocious. People can say what they want about how Reach was "slower" and how the armor abilities were giving some noobs an edge. I'll admit that point. However, the basic elements of Halo - precision and map control - were still present. Halo 4's Multiplayer is a departure at the least and a full-out attempt to copy the more fast-paced CoD Multiplayer at most. I'm starting to appreciate Reach more and more the further I delve into 4.
