Combat Mods Need to be Easier to Obtain: An Open Letter

Dearest Bungie Employee (and forum member passerbys), Combat Mods are the life blood of the endgame. Of GrandMaster Nightfalls. Of Day One Raiding. Of Crafting synergizing exotic builds with your subclass and more. I recently came back from a large break away from D2. I've been a pretty casual player, and I mostly play solo. I haven't ever gotten into the nitty gritty of D2's combat mods because I've never had the desire to play anything harder than your typical weekly nightfall. If I can't be matched with a team, I'm most likely not playing the activity. But returning this time around I've changed my perspective. If I can't be matchmade into a team... is there a way I could be my whole team? Could I do a dungeon completely on my own? What if I was 20 below light... how would I survive? And thus I stumbled onto the beautiful build-crafting community. The end game of D2 has never been so tantalizing. The only problem is... I don't have the mods. For any build... to access this kind of challenging content. Sure, my collection of mods is big enough to partially throw together some builds, but they're not optimal. They're not... working at their full potential. I have tons of charged with Light mods. I'll call that Series 1. Don't really have a lot of Warmind cell mods. We'll call that Series 2. Am really hurting on Well mods, we'll call that series 3. Assuming that a new series of combat mods is released every 2 years or so, we're slated to get new ones fairly soon... while I now have immense FOMO and will not be missing out on obtaining series 4 while its available, I don't want new and returning players to suffer a similar fate as me when trying to obtain mods they missed out on during series 4, 3, 2, or 1. I really want Bungie to consider changing how players obtain combat mods. With combat mods being such a huge part of the end game... why are new and returning players restricted to a random rotation of 4 mods per day? Of which many days, I find I own all 4 (and some seem to frequently return). When the new mods came out, players (I assume) collected the mods over the course of the season... but if you miss that season, you're out of luck. I know... I've missed all three series of combat mods dropping. I have purchased many from ADA but it's not enough. Now, I'm logging into the mobile app every day checking Ada's shop out of fear. Because if I miss obtaining a mod from Ada, there's a chance I'll have to wait nearly 6 months for that mod to come back in stock, as was the case with Font of Might that rolled through Ada's shop just a few days ago... I don't want to be the person who has to wait that long for a significantly important combat mod. But should anyone have to wait that long at all? If a Season lasts 10 weeks... then shouldn't returning players be able to complete the collection they missed out on in 10 weeks? Maybe slightly more? If I have the glimmer, why can't I just buy ALL of the mods outright? If obtaining all the mods would pose a threat to the balance of the game, would the mods have been released to the public in the first place? Would the people who earned all the mods during the season be allowed to play? You see where the conundrum comes from? All I'm proposing is a new way to get combat mods I missed out on. I don't need to buy all the mods outright as much as I would like. But I wouldn't mind logging into Destiny 2 every day if it meant I was guaranteed at least one combat mod in ADA's inventory was one I didn't have yet. As it stands, I am completely restricted from solo end game content because I missed a few seasons of destiny. And because of the drip feed of random mods coming through ADA's shop, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to interact with the games end game in the way I'd like any time soon. Imagine if the next set of combat mods in the hypothetical series 4 synergizes with older sets. Much like Series 3 and 1 do together. If I don't have those mods, even if I am able to collect all of series 4, I'm going to be at another disadvantage, still waiting for ADA to sell what I need, and at that point her pool to pull from will be even larger, making it that much more difficult to get mods that I actually need. I barely have any series 2 mods... if the new meta is series 4 and series 2 combat mods. I won't stand a chance. I just want an easier way to get the mods every one else has. I don't want to have so much fear of missing out that I'm checking the mobile app every day, just to be let down because I have all the mods being sold that day, repeat ad nauseum until the community wins the Mod lottery and gets Font of Might for the first time in 6 months. Now, I don't care what the solution is, but I think it's more than agreeable that the process I and many new and returning players are going through to obtain old combat mods is putting us very far behind other players. And with the Loadouts coming in Lightfall, I can only imagine how much further that gap will become should things remain the same. TL;DR I believe there should be a simpler and faster way for new and returning players to obtain old combat mods. Ada's random 4 every day is not a good system. New and returning players who lack old combat mods also lack a sufficient way to obtain them, which restricts players from experiencing some of the best content in the game, that other luckier and more consistent players can experience without issues. Thank you for reading and for considering my plea. - Brando

  • I feel armor needs a rework as well. As I’m finally at 1580 I’m now trying to find armor with the right set of stat points but rng is brutal. So screw any build I’m working towards because the rng is hating it? I understand that it’s a looter shooter and rng is a part of the game. But I feel there needs to be alternate roads to achieving the loot. We got weapon crafting to give us god rolls. Armor is still up to chance. Yes I know about slapping a discipline armor mod on my ghost but still the drops are ridiculous. My characters get high discipline but then a high stat in something I’m not trying to build into. I’ve been focusing engrams at the war table, crown of sorrow and the Star chart. And it’s still up to chance. Why can’t we reroll armor stat distribution? If I get a piece 60 or higher with the worst distribution it gets dismantled. I don’t see why we can’t reroll or craft armor pieces that can have stats redistributed for a price. Glass needles should return for exotics. Rerolling won’t change the total stats but reallocate them. It’s just ridiculous that builds rely on chance.

  • It’s absolutely an issue and is something they need to address for new lights and casuals. Mods should be attainable through Ikora at the tower for glimmer. Too many players become hamstring trying to build craft and not having proper mods. Great feedback for sure.

  • Just give new players some basic combat mods (Taking Charge, High Energy Fire, Global Reach, etc) and then have the rest drop from defeating enemies along with having Banshee and Ada sell them as they do now.

      • I think the solution is not just to make all the mods available at once because I think obtaining the mods is part of the early game progression of Destiny 2. They should ideally grant them when you get major ranks with core playlist vendors allowing you to farm them rather than waiting on RNG to grace you with the mod you want that day via Ada-1. So for example you'd get a random combat style mod you don't have at Brave 1, Heroic 1, Fabled 1, Mythic 1 and Legend. This would apply to each playlist vendor so if you do 1 reset for each vendor in a given season you'd get 15 mods, 30 if you did 2 resets. There isn't that many combat style mods to begin with so it wouldn't take that long to get all of them especially if you grind rep out on a double rep week.

      • Just have the gunsmith sell them all. The more powerful the mod or the harder it is to aquire in the wild, the more expensive the mod is. Rahool already sells the high end upgrade materials, this shouldn't be much different.

Destiny's modding is a terrible and archaic system. These mods are barely impactful. It's not even a proper modding system. Want a grenade build? Just put on the same 3 mods across all three characters with discipline armor and done. Now translate this to every other kind of "build". From a pve perspective: Mods need to seriously enhance gameplay. How about some subclass mods? Put on X mod on Y subclass to make supers last 10 seconds longer. Or how about, put on another X mod increase headshot multiplier from automatic weapons. Etc etc you get the gist. Every armor has the same stat mods followed by something utility based. Every weapon ends up with a spec mod. No variety. And there needs to be a dedicated way to get mods. Mod drops scale to difficulty of activity. This ada 1 crap is the worst. Nightmare for someone who wants to get into destiny.

        • How about Nightfalls with champions have a chance (50%) to reward a combat mod on a Platinum completion. Another idea that’s a little more passive would be a chance to drop combat mods when decoding Prime or Legendary Engrams.

        • Honestly I think they should remove these mods entirely and put this level of power into the subclasses if they want us to be that powerful. They should still let us get mods but have them fall into general use weak mods or powerful use niche mods, like raid mods, after the move towards subclasses

I have said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again. All mods need to be added as rewards from doing playlist activities, Strikes/pvp/gambit are the perfect place for new players to gain access to them and old returning players to farm any they are missing. At this point it feels like whoever is in charge of this stuff at Bungie is purposely trying to drive away new/returning players by locking them out of a huge part of the gameplay by putting it behind a RNG time-gate.

            • Combat style mods are the soul of modern Destiny. It feels like MTG deckbuilding, picking 5 elements and then assigning build defining abilities to them to construct a build. People who say they don’t matter are literally idiots. Your combat style mod setup is a second exotic, if not better. This mechanic is what is driving new players to the game. When I show my friends the game, I jump straight to dungeons and buildcrafting. Even if it doesn’t appeal to the “day one” Destiny audience, it is an extremely unique mechanic! Bungie needs to be showing this off. You should be getting some of this stuff the moment you have armor that can equip it. And, of course, the new player gift armor had a full set of combat style mods! Combat style mods should be sold by some vendor just like Ikoras stuff. A list of “archetypes” you can buy, and then every mod not earnable in game for 10,000 glimmer each.

Hopefully next season we get more mods I like wells but it forces you to main matching sub and energy weapons I would love to use a solar power melee build but In order to get a arc well to drop on a solar class I have to use a finisher sadly😢 Just make a mod vendor ("the one next to the mail vendor on your way to the ship dock")and make them all purchasable with Glimmer and legendary shards then having new players wait weeks for the mod they looking for plus it will keep new players engaged to unlock all of them

I couldn't even imagine how much of a PITA it would be to try to get back into it with this system in place. Just another reason on top of the hundred others to why I wouldn't come back or recommend this game to others. Bungie keep on Bungie'ing. Lol

Definitely not reading that no offense but yes they do need to rotate more in instead of the seemingly random distribution they currently have. For example, Well of Tenacity took 10 full months to come back on rotation, and that should never happen. Ada can easily sell everything in her selection at least twice a month and still have time left over for some to come in a 3rd.

There should be a Kiosk that you can buy mods for Glimmer. Any mod you can not earn (and not some Random BS) during the current season should be available in the Kiosk.

                                  • Mods should be more easily accessible. Mods are not required for endgame content. I could do any GM with the fourth slot in my armor essentially empty and not even notice. Most end game players could, and sometimes do, because they’re irritating to change.
