The cabal are very capable fighters and I think your underestimating them. Look at the cabal invasion of the dreadnought, it took oryx using his taken powers to halt their advance by taking the commander. Even then the shield brothers managed to take control of the core and almost blew it up. Also your talking about a race who have captured thousands of worlds and rule over countless species. The thing about military, if a commander dies then a new one is promoted. For fallen new captains grow from vandals and vandals grow from dregs. as for archons/kells there haven't been any since D1. Various D2 lore has stated that all of them are dead and the fallen have switched to a new structure of crime lords. They are on their last legs but will either fight to the end or more likely join us some time in the future. I believe Varicks has become the kell of house dusk and believes he is the kell of kell and will attack us to reclaim the traveler. But I think mithrax is actually the true kell of kells and will full fill the prophecy by challenging Varicks to gain control of the largest house and then force them to work with us to share the traveler.

  • The Cabal were able to crash their ship on the Dreadnaught only because we took out Oryx's weapon. Their ship would have ended up like Mara's fleet. And Oryx didn't just take the cabal on the ship. Remember he sends his shadow to take over Phobos. The end of that cutscene it's implied that any Cabal that didn't escape were turned into taken. And a large chunk of the different Cabal legions in the System were on Phobos to plan a strike against Earth. Oryx took a very large percent of that. Ghaul told them to crash the ship. And the Bond Brothers were trying do a ultimatum for their dead Primus. To be completely honest. If we didn't kill Oryx, that whole Cabal ship would have been Taken.

  • The cabal crashed their ship into the dreadnought before we boarded. That's why in the opening mission we see the cabal fight on the dreadnought. While oryx did take 50-90% of each regiment in the system at the time, that force was miniscule. According to D1 lore, those cabal were just a scouts unite for the system. In D2 we also saw psions learning to use taken power on an edz adventure.

  • Hmm. Maybe the weapon takes time to recharge. I assume the Dantalion is probably around the same size a a Fallen Ketch. And Mara's was blown to pieces, not to mention a very large chunck of Saturn's Ring. Or Maybe Oryx let them, so that he could take them for his army since he wiped out his during the Battle of Saturn. I just think that's weird that they could slip by but our single tiny Hive ship gets attacked. D2 is weird with the Psions. I think they might have them revolt against the true Cabal. Like, image fighting the Cabal's captive races.
