It is a downside of cheap p2p system with minimal server investment. If you look on router traffic, here is how matchmaking works (xbox version).
Console contacts xbl server in region. This is UK for most of Europe. Yes, I've a corporate vpn and I have tested it from all EU locations (finding players)
Server replies in seconds to get a list of players who might match you (evaluating players). These are players looking for same activity as you, comp, pvp, pve strike, etc.
If players are matched host players are selected. Yes, Netduma OS, figures it out and you can see in geo map. I am in UK and host is normally somewhere in continent.
Match starts.
Now, this is all good and dandy. But if you loo at traffic time and low number of players who are evaluated (you see residual pings on your router) you can only deduce that the algorithm is relaxed. For example, if kd was a metric then it would be impossible to find a match as there aren't enough players available in pool.
My educated guess is that a sbmm is in place but due to a smaller player base it is falling back to random matching.
Don't see how this can be fixed apart from improving game and getting more players.
I guess that is expected when most of the development budget is being thrown o Eververse weekly refresh.

Now here's how it actually works. Host, lol.

Net code... lol

Some good information there thanks for the insight! So basically they should know that sbmm isnt going to work. That is probably why they decided to step half into f2p. Agreed with EV they need to show some love to other things!

He's wrong, mainly.

I haven't watched the video yet but saw the date (2017) is it not a possibility that it has changed due to the implementation of SBMM?

No, it's not about sbmm, it's how destiny works. They've tweaked sbmm ever since the first SRL in 2014. The guy said it chooses a host on the continent. There is no host. There's also no sbmm, it's performance based n adjusts after every game. Did you know for example, this new glory system gives extra glory to players it thinks should be higher, to get them out of the lower tiers. So say you hit mythic for the last few seasons, it'll fast track you to mythic to get you out the earlier ranks. On my old account which I sold a few weeks ago I got to mythic in like 12 games, I was getting 300-500 glory per win, once I hit mythic I stalled, getting very few points. On this new acc, it had no previous form, took me forever to hit fabled, I was getting 30 per win, even in a 5 streak I was getting like 150. Had a bungie Dev explain it to me on twitter.
