Hello,
Any progress made in Year 1 and 2 campaigns were reset with Shadowkeep's release.
You can pick up Year 1 campaigns from Amanda Holliday in the Tower Hangar.
You can start Forsaken from the Tangled Shore map.

Does this mean that the old campaigns just don't exist in the early game? I'm very confused with why everything becomes obsolete when a new update is released.

They exist, they are just no longer necessary to advance in the game and can be completed anytime.

Since the game is now free to play I guess, is there any benefit to having bought it?
