A Lunar Haunt

With more and more teasers being released for Shadowkeep, the more and more we get to look around at what’s become of Earth’s Moon since Guardian attention was directed elsewhere. Needless to say, the Hive have been making more than a few renovations with their unmonitored freedom. Spinning spike pillars, floating ritual rocks, a few winding crimson towers here and there. Classic Hive, with their demented gothic tastes. I really like the red that they’ve gone with. Looks like the Hidden Swarm have been left with full control over the Moon, with a majority of their hierarchy having been slaughtered. Or perhaps the Scarlet Brood has finally reared it’s head. Time will tell, I’m sure. However, the changes they’ve made to Luna are quite minuscule compared to the potential changes our dear Eris Morn has made herself. Released something or other, which has left countless dead enemies running amuck for the Guardians to re-kill all again, all while simultaneously giving the Vex the perfect opportunity to mount a Hail-Mary assault on the Sol system. All very dangerous, all very ominous. And all very much something the Guardians will put a bullet in and be done with for good this time. Or is it? Because you see, there’s been a trend that I’ve noticed recently with Destiny. Nothing seems to want to die. Calus, Xol, Drevis and the other Taken bosses, Riven, Fikrul and the Scorn, both of the Sov royalty, Dûl Incaru along with pretty much any Hive in the Dreaming City. And now apparently every big bad that’s ever gone bump in the night. It seems to be a growing theme for Guardians than not everything can be solved with a gun and a knife. I doubt the message will be gotten across, but hey, anything can happen. Thematic Overtones aside, I believe that whatever’s brought all these monsters back from their grave is something a little more… permanent. Something that you can’t just explode and then its gone forever. Something bigger than the Guardians and all their guns. I think this has something to do with the Throne World. And not some new Hive god on the block’s Throne World, I think it has to do with the Guardian’s Throne World! …hear me out. Now, the concept of the Guardian having a Throne World has been tossed around a lot in the community for a while now. I’m not the biggest fan of the idea being actualized, but quite a few people have wanted this ever since Toland shammed the Guardian for not taking the Taken Mantle when they had the chance. I don’t think Bungie would give the Guardian a Thrown World, or at least I think its a bad idea, narratively speaking, but I think Shadowkeep might be their way of addressing this. Its said that Eris Morn is responsible for the nightmares resurfacing. Not some Hive ritual or Taken revival, but something she herself accidentally let loose on Luna. Its also said that these nightmares are looking for vengeance, implying that they’re not just mindless shadows or clones of the originals, but the actual, bonafide bosses brought back from the grave. Not for nothing, but reviving countless monstrosities isn’t something you just accidentally do unless you’re cooking with some pretty volatile ingredients. So what I’m thinking is the lovely Eris has been looking into Ascended Realm magic, specifically in the real estate department. I won’t judge, just about anyone who’s anyone has some form of 3d space in the ascendant realm, so perhaps she meant to gift the Guardian their own Throne as ways of showing her appreciation for all they’ve done for her. Or maybe something a little more in character of her, like exploiting the sheer destructive force of the Guardian to make some ultimate Hive God killing weapon. Whatever it was, I think she connected the Guardian to a Throne space, and the slain are being brought back through that. We’ve seen this before with Mara Sov, when she was killed by Oryx and trapped in his Throne World as just an essence. As soon as no one was in control of this Throne, she was able to free herself and escape back to the real world via her own Throne’s portals. The enemies being brought back are specifically one that the Guardians have killed, so there has to be some literal connection between them and the resurrected. Guardians don’t gain power the way Hive do with their Sword Logic, but killing does seem to have some metaphysical presence in base reality. So its possible that if Eris went and tied the Guardian to a Throne without them knowing, that all that killing they’ve been doing has finally had a place to manifest, and without anyone directly in control of the Throne, they’ve been able to escape, just as Mara did. Since Mara has all of Oryx’s Throne power, manifesting a physical body would’ve been easy for her, but since those being brought back in Shadowkeep are relatively causal, they can only muster a shadowy form. Perhaps the Guardian Throne World idea is a little too far fetched, but I do believe whatever has revived these enemies is Ascended Realm related. The Reason for this is all those floating figures out above the Hell Mouth. They’re particularly human looking. Not Hive or Eliksni or any other slim creature, but specifically human. We know that even if a creature is killed and lost in a Throne, their essence still lingers, perhaps to be consumed or repurposed later, or if that’s just the natural state there, but they do persist in some form. What if the Ascendant Realm has been torn open, and all the slain are bleeding back into our world? And these are just the Guardians Crota slaughtered on the Moon, or the Awoken Oryx killed at Saturn. Whoever’s kills they are, they’re human, and I think they’re a very important insight into what’s happening on the Moon.

Mara Sov entered Oryx’s Throne world because that was her plan. She allowed herself to be impaled on the Taken King’s sword, whereas she dance down it and into his Throne World. It’s not the standard. The Ascendant realm isn’t Hell, though it is a hell of sorts. It’s also unlikely what Eris released was related to her looking for real estate. More than likely she was investigating the Hive’s newfound love of schemes, only to stumble across something she shouldn’t have in the dark below. My guess? This is necromancy. We’ve seen it three times already. Nokris resurrected dead Hive with it, Xol resurrected old enemies with it and took them, though not perfect imitations. Lastly, the Fanatic possessed the ability to revive dead Fallen and turn them into Scorn. Nokris got this ability from Xol. There’s only one thing Xol could have gotten it from. The Fanatic got it from the pure Corrupted Ether that flows through his veins, which was created when Uldren’s corruption mixed with the dying Baron’s ether. What links all of these together? The Darkness. ‘But Cox, doesn’t Necromancy constitute as heresy according to the Sword Logic?’ Correct. Except the Darkness doesn’t quite care for this Logic, only as a means to an end. After all, the Hive will die anyways once there’s nothing left to slaughter.
