Just think of it like any other product. When its brand new the market demand is high, there for the company or people selling the product will most likely sell it at a higher price knowing that people will buy it just as long as its still reasonable. However, 1 or 2 years later that particular product may no longer be as desirable due to newer products either replacing it or improving upon it. At that point the sellers can not price the older product at the same price it was at launch because the demand for the product has now become much lower and people are not willing to pay the original price it was sold at. Some examples include smart phones, cars, laptops, basically any type of product that gets updated every year or so, or products that just lose value as time passes.

Grind hasn't been wasted as (for the most part) I actually enjoyed playing the game. Doesn't seem like you enjoyed playing. If other people getting a level boost is bothering you. And the ones who paid do have a better loot pool. All loot will not be available to those who didn't pay
