I was wrong, it was another thread. If you want a TLDR moment, the go check it out. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/252088100/0/0/1 Btw, I was looking over The Great Cookie War stories and I read yours just a day or two ago. Made me realize I had not seen you around for a minute. Has everything been going good for you?

  • It's been decent. I have been busy with college life and stuff, so that might be the reason for my absence. I must say, it feels good to be back. Oh, and I finally found time to get into writing again. I haven't been able to focus on it in recent time, so it's been nice. And I remember the cookie wars stories, those were fun! If I recall correctly, my story had me fighting to my dying breath to defend a molasses cookie storage.

It is good to have you back, even if these are....trying.....times in Offtopic. College is something worthy of focusing on. I only did a few classes, mainly just some shit I was interested in. They were not happy about that, wanted me to take all this other garbage, until I told them I was not interested in a degree and I could take my money elsewhere.....lol. So what type of writing do you do? You are quite right! I even copied it for you, if you want a trip down memory lane, lol. Ruby Forest:
Ruby went to the one place Xombie had not thought to protect, for Ruby saw how much Xombie was trying to protect his faithful followers of Bernthal the Great, then acted with a clean, clear focus that only the most battle hardened soldiers have! Ruby leapt upon the Undead Hawg and raced to the Holy Molasses Cookie Warehouse, arriving just in time to battle off the first wave of Owlish invaders! Ruby's movements were precise and economical, a sweet dance of death between blade and revolver that wove the most stalwart of defenses, but alas, even a warrior as mighty as the forest they are named after, could not last forever. The bullets ran out, the sword didst shatter and Ruby, well, Ruby went down under Owlish wings and Minty Crackers, the hilt of the sword and the grip of the gun swinging, taking down 2 last opponents before perishing under the ferocious blows of minty feathers......
• Makes sense. I'm going for a business degree, but I don't really want to do more than the minimum.
So what type of writing do you do?
Mainly short stories with a concept in mind. I make the characters breathe life into the concept and flesh it out. That, and I have been writing stories about how I go about the creative process of writing, it's quite refreshing to put my thoughts on paper like that. I'm currently writing a fanfiction for RWBY, since some of my friends wanted me to give it a try. It's really fun, and I do enjoy a longer project, but I can tell it's not my forte. Makes me quite nostalgic thinking about it. It was really fun to see what you made!

You know, my original idea was to make the stories fun and silly and somehow, some of them grew legs and ran away from me, like ABackSeatGhoul's, yours and a few others. I was so unbelievably exhausted afterwards, lol. All I wanted though, was to make everyone happy with their deaths and for them to feel some xombie love. A business degree, nice! I love seeing the characters come to life. That is my favorite part. I tend to write in a limited genre, sadly. I need to broaden my scope a lot, lol.

Trust me, sometimes you just get really into it. I like to think of it as 'writing from the heart'. And yeah, my parents wanted me to get at least a degree in business. I'm also unsure if I want to get something more. I love seeing the characters come to life. That is my favorite part. I tend to write in a limited genre, sadly. I need to broaden my scope a lot, lol.
Yep, I actually spend the most time on character design and characterization. One of my favorite things to do with characters and certain aspects. As for the limited genre you write, I wouldn't call it a problem. Everyone starts off somewhere! For example, I started with fiction short stories, then only did abstract writing, and now I do a lot of genres. Whatever would fit the theme I want to go for. It just takes time and sometimes a bit of self-discovery of your writing desires to expand.

Well, after 3 decades of writing, I think I have worn a groove in the genres I like, lol. I hate most of my own writing, even the stuff I am most proud of. It always feels like I am struggling to give it the proper gravitas, yet making it an everyday type story. I always feel like I am coming off as a teen trying to sound like an adult, lol. I do like my characters though. Discovering their strengths, their weaknesses, taking myself out of me and letting them write their own story. Sometimes it is very hard to find their voice. You know, having that degree can open a lot of doors for you, so it is not a bad idea and if you become a world famous author (I expect a signed copy), it will help you navigate your own business!

  • That would be true lol. And you should be more proud of your work! You put effort into it, you should be proud of that. And to be fair, a lot of people that write young adult stories are in their 30s. At least you like your characters, that's what matters in this case. They are the life and blood of a story! And honestly, a lot of writers struggle to find voices for their characters. Whenever I struggle to do so, I always stop writing, and take a few minutes to put it away. I grab water or something, go outside and look over nature. As I do that, I think about the ideals of the person I am creating. It usually help me to find that voice. And, we'll see about being an author haha. I don't have a huge plan to go and be one, but maybe I could create a book made of short stories and attempt to publish it.

Sadly, I do not write young adult. I like to write sci-fi, fantasy and urban fantasy. That is why it bugs me that my characters sound like angsty teens sometimes. I do love my characters. Some of them were D&D characters that took on a life of their own and moved into a story, not always in fantasy either, sometimes they move into urban fantasy or sci-fi. I really have not done horror. The one off I wrote for ABackSeatGhoul during the Great Cookie War, that was my first attempt and it came off less as horror and more as gore, I think, lol. I have another one that I am working on and have been for about 8 months now, but it has stalled out completely. I all do now is fix mistakes and re-word stuff already written. When I can't find their voice, I take a shower. Why? All my best ideas come to me there, lol. I need a waterproof laptop. I used to get great ideas while driving, but since I can record myself on my phone, no more driving ideas, lol. One of the odd things I do when writing, is to write down ideas that strike me and then leave them alone. Later, I come back to them and sometimes, the story between the ideas builds itself like a bridge. Everyone like to create these Billy Badass characters and I don't. I have some, but I like my mains to be broken, weak, almost normal. Just enough special to make you wish you could do what they do, but not enough where you roll your eyes. Like this Elf I created, Tsurugi Shin. He resides in Dallas, TX and he deals with the small "supernatural" occurences. A lone werewolf with a limp, he is your man, err elf! You have a wolfpack, we are sorry, but the number you have dialed is no longer in service. Unicorns trying to eat your virginity? Tsurugi Shin has a sword, 2 actually, and will travel (on your dime of course)! Are Gnomes mining under your house? Have Pixies built a nest in your award winning rose garden? Call Tsurugi Shin! Has an Elder God risen in your son or daughter with the intention to eat your soul and the souls of the entire world? Call Harry Dresden, Shaman Bond or Cal Leandros. Hell, call Sam & Dean Winchester, because Tsurugi Shin will be on vacation! You do what makes you happy, I am just trying to secure my copy of your book if you ever do become famous, lol.

  • Well, young adult stuff tends to fall into fantasy and sci-fi, but I see what you mean here. I write teenage and young adult characters, but I have written kids and adults as well, and it can be hard to write them in a semi-realistic manner. I can't say I have ever done this, but it sounds interesting. I usually create an entirely new character for different stories, unless I specifically want a older character to appear.
I have another one that I am working on and have been for about 8 months now, but it has stalled out completely. I all do now is fix mistakes and re-word stuff already written.
In this scenario, I would suggest that you do a full overhaul of the starting point of what made you unsure of what to do with it. If you write out the part that started your writer's block, it tends to resolve itself. That, or you attempt to power through the issue. And hey, whatever helps you decide how a character sounds and stuff! That's how I'm writing that longer story I spoke about. I sit and think out ideas for what I want in the chapter, and then I write it in more detail as I go. Plus it tends to help me snowball into other ideas. Yep, I really don't like those kind of characters. Not only does it make people dislike them, it's unfair to the character that he never has to work for anything. It's unfair that they can't grow. It's a huge issue in fanbases that make fan stories. I mean, I'm making a story for a fanbase that has an original character that is not seen in the actual canon. And I want him to appear capable, but I purposely made him only really powerful in specific circumstances. I could go into more detail, but I don't want to bore you lol. Anyway, this character is just above average, but not some crazy good prodigy, even when he is "powerful". And in my defense, it is a good reason for why he gets so much better in those circumstances. Another difficulty is making characters realistic teenagers (average age being 17 to 19). It's a thin line between keeping the original characters that appear still be that character, while delving into their characterization.
You do what makes you happy, I am just trying to secure my copy of your book if you ever do become famous, lol.
Haha, I'll be sure to keep you in mind if it happens!
