In simple terms... Imagine you're going to the shops. You can walk or drive one of a number of possible routes. Now, normally when you get there the shopkeeper doesn't care how you got there, or what your home address is, or what country you are from, so you can just walk in and browse and buy what you want. In the above example - Destiny's servers are the 'shop/shopkeeper', and for some reason they currently care either about how you got to their 'shop' or what your home address is or some other bit of info - and it's causing a problem as you try and get in. In fact they are either stopping you at the door, or kicking you out for no reason! It appears the common denominator for this problem is BT (a UK Internet Service Provider) - they give you both your home address, and guide you on the journey to the Destiny servers. (I'm over simplifying all this so apologies if this is too simple or stupid :) ) So, what we've found is that using a service called a VPN (Virtual Private Network) gets around the problem. Back to our analogy... If you're using a VPN - now, when you leave your home you're still leaving by the front door that BT (your ISP) gave you, but now the VPN steps in and gives you a new address (which will be different from the one the ISP originally gave you), AND they also dig a tunnel outside your front door that leads directly to where you want to go. So you are 'hidden' while on the journey. You pop out of the tunnel outside Destiny's door, and they let you in - they have no problem with any part of the journey (as it was hidden), or your made up address. This is getting around whatever screw up BT have caused. So that's a very simplified version of how a VPN works. There's nothing dodgy about this. In fact many large company's require employees to use VPN's if they are travelling to avoid dodgy wifi in airports etc. With this info in hand you now have two options 1) Wait and see if BT sort their problem out, or Bungie provide a workaround. Or 2) sign up for a VPN service. A VPN normally charges a subscription and this is IN ADDITION to your normal BT (or other ISP) subscription charge - a VPN does not replace your ISP - you still need that front door the ISP gave you!! You can get free VPN services - but they are usually restricted in some way. For example, TunnelBear is well regarded, but the free version has a limit on bandwidth, so you are likely to quickly use it up. I would avoid any VPN that claims to offer an unrestricted service for free - there will be a catch. A couple of good subscription VPN's I have used are VyperVPN and ExpressVPN. (I am not affiliated with either of those, and currently use ExpressVPN and have done for months). ExpressVPN has a 30day free trial - so you could sign up with them, and wait and see if BT sort the issue quickly, then cancel your VPN subscription (most allow immediate cancellation). There are many VPN providers around if you google them. Most VPN providers require you to download a simple piece of software which is easy to set up (normally just a username / password), and allows you to toggle the VPN on and off. It's intended for non-technical people - have no fear! Hope this helps! A couple of things to bear in mind... 1) Many streaming video services, such as Netflix, block the use of most VPN's - so you'll need to toggle it off otherwise you'll get an error and content won't play. 2) You may notice a small slow down of your internet speeds. This is part of the tech that VPN's use and is generally unavoidable.
