I say they are fairly well balanced. They certainly are much better than sidearms and at close range they pretty much beat out any weapon with very little effort apart from power weapons of course. The gap does have to be close but I'm glad that every weapon doesn't have insane range like it did in D1. Again though it hurts the PvE side of things while trying to maintain PvP balance which is a topic flooding the forums....
