I am Christian, but I actually believe that evolution happened, and look to science for explanation on a lot of things. I just feel like the universe is too complicated for this to even be a coincidence. The complexity of the human brain/body, how we're able to think and make such amazing stuff. If you think about it, the fact that we're able to even breath is incredible. If one little thing in our bodies changed, it would be completely different. I think it's all just a bit too coincidental, and that something had to have made us. If you gave a million monkeys each a typewriter, the chances that they'd type out a line from a Shakespeare play with proper grammar and spelling is incredibly low, right? The chances of an enormous explosion creating a sentient and intelligent race is exponentially lower. It's just incredible.

  • It's great that you believe in evolution, but as for the second point: It was not an explosion that created sentient life and animals. The Big Bang has not necessarily been proven fully yet but is a very very likely theory. We do not know how life originated, but abiogenesis has been proven in closed lab conditions. After billions of years and combinations of chemicals, among other things, the most basic of cells originated. From that point onward, more cells duplicated until multicellular organisms evolved in the oceans, and since you have knowledge of evolution I assume you know the rest. How we gained consciencenesss and became self aware is not known by scientists, but that does not necessarily mean a god did it.

  • You are absolutely right. We have no idea how we have consciousness. I just feel that however we created, the chances of us actually developing consciousness was incredibly small if it was in fact, a coincidence. Another reason I'm Christian is because I was raised (and still am, as a matter of fact), in a Christian family. I know this sounds really -blam!-ing cheesy, but I can just feel it. I can feel like there's something spiritual in this world. Laugh at that all you want, call me crazy, it's completely fine. I know I sound like I'm insane, or like I'm lying for that matter. But if you decide you'll take my word for it, I can. (I'm still cringing about how cringeworthy that was).

  • I understand if you believe because you have had what you perceive as a personal experience with a deity, but the religion of a person is often determined by how they were brought up. As Richard Dawkins once explained, "Suppose you grew up in Viking Scandinavia. You'd believe in Wotan and Thor." Many atheists believe that religion should not be forced upon children, nor should they be brought up in schools that do not teach any science whatsoever. While I'm fine with Christian schools, there are extreme cases of indoctrination into Christianity and other religions through the usage of "education" that teaches that atheists are devil worshippers and other astoundly incorrect things. I hope that one day we can eliminate the need for religious indoctrination at an early age and let children decide what they do or do not want to believe. I personally was subject to multiple Vacation Bible Schools when I was younger, and even went to a preschool in which the top floor was a church, so I have experience in what people will do to spread their religion. Have a good day!

  • I completely agree that religion shouldn't be forced upon people. First of all, whoever is forcing it upon you is being a bit of a dick. It also goes against Christian morals. We let people do what they like. If they don't want to become Christian, that's completely fine, they can do what they like. We're supposed to be a peaceful religion. (This was due to the reform some time after the crusades, an awful religious conquest). And you're also right about how your religion mostly depends on where and who you're raised by. Most atheist I know have atheist parents, most Muslims I know have Muslim parents, etc. Anyone who says atheists worship the devil is just flat out illogical and childish. Atheism is to believe there are no omnipotent deities in existence. Accusing an atheist of worshipping the devil is completely stupid, because it goes against the logic of the actual word. There is honestly no limit to human stupidity. I'm glad we talked about this. We've talked about topics that most people would completely exaggerate and twist. Thank you for being polite and stating actually logical points.
