Bungie kind of forgot why exotics are meant to be EXOTIC.
Of course they're going to be overpowered...but there is always a counter to it.
It was my favorite special in year one paired with a messenger adept.

They want exotics to be unique, not overpowered. Look at guns like Dragon's Breath, Khvostov, Super Good Advice, or Zhalo Supercell. Everything they have said and have shown us points to this. Look at how broken TLW was before they put it where it was supposed to be.

That wasn't their intent initially. They never wanted anything to be overpowered really, but exotics were intended to be better than their legendary counterparts in most ways.

Exotics to me always seemed like they wanted them to be designed so they would never be a bad option but are usually better at something than the average legendary is. Unique but as you said, better than most legendaries while still being better at a more niche role.

Yeah, I think their philosophy changed right around when their "balancing" ideals in general went down the toilet. It always felt like the whole point behind only being able to equip 1 at a time was because they were more powerful than legendaries and as a result having nothing but exotics would make someone beyond OP.

I can agree there, but even now if you could wear nothing but exotic gear then you would see some pretty horrific combinations. I still think that exotics should be solid base weapons with some sort of special ability tied to them, so far they have done a good job at that. Red Death is a good example to me since it is a solid weapon that is fairly simple to learn and use.
