Oh the fact that I had to spend $40 to get cosmetic armor which look -blam!-ing amazing on my warlock btw.

He means that he had to spend that in order to get the full set of armour that he wanted. Not that he had no choice.

I know what he meant, but I hate when people say they [i]had[/i] to do something that was a choice. Why not just say "It took/cost $40" instead of "I had to spend $40"?

It's perfectly acceptable from an English point-of-view to say 'I had to invest this amount in order to get my desired object/outcome'. It's a less long-winded way of saying 'I decided to buy dawning treasures in order to get the full set of armour. I had to spend $40 buying dawning treasures in order to get the fullset'.
